ATHENS, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team scored 10 consecutive points to end the first half and begin the second, and the Falcons totaled 14 steals in a 64-55 win over host Ohio University. The Mid-American Conference game was held at OU's Convocation Center Saturday afternoon (Jan. 13).
With the win, the Falcons improve to 14-2 overall and 4-0 in MAC play, while the Bobcats drop to 8-8 and 1-3, respectively.
Senior Carin Horne paced three double-digit scorers for the Brown and Orange, with a game-high 16 points. Classmates Ali Mann and Liz Honegger added 13 and 10 points, respectively, with Mann scoring eight of her points in the first half and Honegger recording all 10 of hers in the second.
Horne and Honegger each had seven rebounds to tie for team honors, and Horne and sophomore Jasmine McCall each made five steals as BG recorded 14 as a team.
For the Bobcats, Domenica Silva had 10 points, while four teammates scored nine apiece. BGSU held Rachel Frederick, the Bobcats' second-leading scorer entering the game, scoreless.
BGSU's 10 consecutive points came as part of a mid-game 18-2 run that erased a four-point deficit and gave the Brown and Orange a double-digit lead.
The Bobcats, before an attendance that tied the season high, pounded the ball inside for a layup, three free throws and a 5-2 lead. Horne hit a tough right-side baseline jumper to cut Ohio's lead to a single point, and the score remained 5-4 for the next several minutes.
The Falcons held the Bobcats to just 1-for-9 shooting from the field to begin the game, and Mann backed Frederick down for a layup that gave the visitors a 6-5 lead at the 14:25 mark.
Jennifer Bushby gave the hosts the lead with a three-pointer, but senior Megan Thorburn answered with a three-ball of her own, taking a pass from sophomore Lindsey Goldsberry and draining a right-side shot for a 9-8 BG lead.
The Falcons again got the ball inside to Mann, who drew a foul and hit a pair of free throws for an 11-8 BG lead.
Each team had struggled from the field over the first nine minutes, but the offenses picked up at each end of the floor. A McCall steal led to an OU foul, and the soph's free throws gave BG a five-point lead, before OU's Simone Redd drilled a right-side triple. Horne answered with a foul-line jumper.
Bushby hit another triple, then knocked her third three-pointer of the game at the 6:31 mark, and the hosts had a 21-17 lead. After a quick timeout by BGSU head coach Curt Miller, the Falcons proceeded to begin the 18-2 run that extended into the second half.
That run began as McCall fired a pass inside to senior Amber Flynn for a layup. BG continued to work the ball inside, as junior Kate Achter's pass found Mann down low, and the senior tri-captain's layup tied the game. Then, Achter hit a running jumper in the lane at the 3:03 mark, and BG had the lead for good.
A Mann layup after a Goldsberry offensive rebound gave the Falcons a four-point lead and prompted a Bobcat timeout.
Chandra Myers scored for the hosts with 41 seconds left in the first half, for the Bobcats' lone points in a span of 10:35. Still, the Falcons' lead was only two points before Achter and Goldsberry combined for a big BG basket before the break.
With the shot clock winding down, Achter took a few dribbles against a double-team, clearing space for Goldsberry in the right corner. The junior point guard then dished a short pass to her sophomore teammate, and Goldsberry's three-point try found nothing but net with 13 seconds remaining, for a 28-23 halftime lead.
In that first half, Ohio's duo of Lauren Kohn (15.8 ppg) and Frederick (15.2) -- averaging a combined 31 points per game entering Saturday's action -- had been held to a combined two points, while the Falcons' Honegger had been held scoreless.
On the opening possession of the second half, the Falcons got a pair of offensive rebounds from Horne and Achter, and Achter ended that possession with a short jumper off glass after Mann's pass in traffic. The Brown and Orange had a 30-23 lead.
On the Falcons' next possession, Achter pushed the tempo as BG enjoyed a 3-on-2 advantage heading downcourt. Achter found an open Horne for a right-side triple and a 10-point advantage. Mann was fouled on another fast-break opportunity, and knocked down both free throws for a 35-23 lead with 17:46 left.
Lauren Hmiel hit a three-pointer at the 16:04 mark for Ohio's first points of the half. The Bobcats kept battling, and after Alana Trotter spotted Silva for a layup, the hosts were within 35-29 and the crowd was beginning to make some noise. But, Horne quieted all but the BGSU cheering section, hitting a three-pointer off of McCall's inbounds pass on the next possession. Then, McCall got a steal and drew an OU foul, splitting her free throws to give the Falcons a 10-poitn lead, 39-29.
Again, the home team came back, narrowing the score to 39-33. But, Honegger took a Goldsberry pass and drained a left-elbow three-pointer at the 11:50 mark. The shot marked Honegger's first points of the game, but the senior was far from finished.
Trotter hit a long jumper at the other end, but Honegger got open again, this time at the right elbow, and hit another long-range shot for a 46-35 Falcon lead at 11:03.
Several minutes later, after McCall pulled down a long defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast for a pull-up jumper, BG's lead was 49-37. Flynn blew by her defender for a layup, and McCall had a steal and another coast-to-coast drive, this time ending with a layup and a 53-38 advantage.
The Bobcats scored the next four points to pull within 11, and held the Falcons at that 53-point mark for nearly three minutes. But, McCall passed the ball to Goldsberry on the perimeter, and Goldsberry made the `extra pass' to find Honegger for a straightaway three-point dagger. That shot gave the Falcons a 56-42 lead with three-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Mann muscled past her defender for a layup, and Horne connected on a long jumper, giving the Falcons a 60-42 edge with 2:08 on the clock.
The final few furious minutes featured five fouls by the Bobcats, who were able to bring the final margin to single digits by sinking a pair of three-pointers and a layup over the final 1:49.
McCall, playing a career-high 24 minutes off the bench, had eight points and led the Falcons with four assists, in addition to her five steals. Flynn and Goldsberry, the other two Falcon bench players in the game, scored four points apiece.
The Falcons shot just 37.3 percent from the field, but BGSU forced 21 Ohio turnovers while committing just 11 themselves. BG had a 19-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
BGSU has little time before the next game, as the Falcons will return to the road for a Tuesday (Jan. 16) contest at Miami University. That will conclude the Falcons' five-game swing against the other MAC East Division teams to begin the conference schedule. Then, BG will return home to face Central Michigan University next Saturday (Jan. 20), the first of six-straight games vs. West Division foes.
NOTES
* The Falcons increased several lengthy streaks in Saturday's win at Ohio ... BGSU won for the 29th consecutive time against a MAC foe, extending the school and conference records ... BG's last loss to a conference opponent came in February of 2005.
* BGSU now has won seven consecutive games since a nine-point loss to then fourth-ranked Duke ... the Blue Devils, currently ranked third in the nation, remain unbeaten after an 81-62 win over Maryland Saturday afternoon ... after a last-second three-pointer brought Maryland within 19 points, the Terrapins, who entered the day ranked No. 1 in the nation, become only the second team (other than the Falcons) to stay within 20 points of Duke this season.
* Ohio entered Saturday's game with a 6-1 record at home this season ... the Bobcats' only two losses have come against top-25 teams, as Pittsburgh posted an eight-point victory at `The Convo' in December ... the Panthers were ranked 24th in the nation at the time ... BGSU is currently ranked 18th in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN polls, the highest rankings in school and MAC history.
* The Falcons have now won 11 consecutive MAC road games, and BG has won 17 of the last 19 overall road contests ... the only two losses in that span have come in overtime, at Kentucky (Jan. 2, 2006) and Notre Dame (Nov. 13, 2006).
* Senior Ali Mann has scored in double digits in each of the Falcons' 16 games this season ... she has recorded at least 10 points in BGSU's last 23 games dating to last season, and has posted double-digit totals in 86 of her 109 career games.
* Once again, the Falcons posted a win after a quick pregame meal ... a scan of the recap of the St. Bonaventure game will remind you that Curt Miller's 100th win came after a pregame meal that lasted only 47 minutes from arrival to departure ... for those who are interested (and we're guessing that is a very small percentage of the readership), that record was shattered on Saturday, as the Falcon travel party had only a 35-minute stay at their restaurant of choice ... for those who continue to read this note despite its complete lack of useful information, the restaurant of choice was Ruby Tuesday's.
