CHICAGO, Ill. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Senior Ali Mann scored a game-high 20 points to pace five double-digit scorers as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team picked up a 72-55 road win over Chicago State University Tuesday night (Jan. 30). The non-conference game was held at the Jacoby D. Dickens Center in the Windy City.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 19-2 on the season, and BGSU has won 12 consecutive games since a Dec. 19 loss to top-ranked Duke. The Cougars drop to 8-15 on the year.
BGSU's win was the 11th in non-conference play, extending the school single-season record. Two prior teams, including last year's club, won nine times in non-league action.
Junior Kate Achter scored 14 points, while senior Liz Honegger had 13. Seniors Carin Horne and Amber Flynn rounded out the Falcons' twin-figure scorers with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
For the hosts, Jasmin Dixon and Zondranika Williams each scored 13 points.
The Cougars broke out to a quick 4-0 lead, before the Falcons got on the scoreboard. Achter, after a near turnover, regained the ball and hit a short jumper in the lane, and the junior then fed Horne for a layup on the fast break.
When Achter hit a short running one-hander, the Falcons held a 6-4 lead with nearly three minutes gone, and the visitors would not trail again. Mann hit a trailing three-pointer, and the hosts took a timeout, trailing by a 9-4 count.
Ayesha Neasley - who scored the Cougars' first six points of the night - hit a jumper in traffic, but Mann kicked the ball out to Honegger for a three-pointer, and the Brown and Orange held a 12-6 lead at the first media timeout of the game. The Falcons went 5-of-7 from the field to begin the contest.
After a Horne three-ball out of that timeout, the Falcons had a 15-8 lead. The hosts scored four-straight points, but a Flynn shot-fake and drive led to a layup and a 17-10 lead. Sophomores Lindsey Goldsberry and Jasmine McCall teamed up for the next two points, as a Goldsberry deflection led to a steal at midcourt and a breakaway layup for McCall.
Out of the next media timeout, a McCall inbounds pass led to an easy Flynn layup. Then, Goldsberry's cross-court pass found Honegger for a left-side three-pointer. The Falcons held a 24-10 lead and the Cougars burned their second timeout of the evening.
BG's run continued, however, as Honegger rebounded her own miss and hit an off-balance jumper in the lane. The run was 11-0 and the lead was 26-10.
The Cougars worked the clock and hit a pair of jumpers, and got a BG turnover on the next possession. The teams battled back and forth for the next few minutes, with the Falcons maintaining their double-digit lead.
After a Flynn layup gave the visitors a 35-21 lead with 2:17 on the clock, the hosts mounted a rally. Chandra Timberlake scored a basket, and Alyssa Waldon hit a triple to cut BG's margin to single digits, 35-26, with 17.5 seconds left.
The Falcons held for one shot, but Achter's runner would not drop. More importantly, however, she was whistled for her third foul of the game with just four seconds left in the half. The teams went to the lockerrooms with BG holding that nine-point lead.
Horne led the Falcons in the first few minutes of the second half. The senior hit a tough fallaway jumper on the opening possession, and after Dixon responded with a second-chance jumper in the lane, Horne followed her own missed shot to grab an offensive rebound and convert a layup.
Then, the senior grabbed a defensive rebound, took the ball coast to coast, and fed Mann for an easy layup and a 41-30 lead with two-plus minutes gone.
A Mann driving layup gave the Falcons a 45-33 advantage, and several minutes later, Flynn's offensive rebound and nifty layup put the Brown and Orange ahead by a 49-36 count. But, the pesky hosts hung around.
The Cougars battled to within 53-44 before Mann hit a big jumper from the foul-line extended, just as the home fans were starting to make some noise.
But, Williams drained a three-pointer to pull the Cougars within eight points, 55-47, and the Falcons were called for an over-the-back foul after a missed shot midway through the half.
When Mann scored again, the Falcons had a 61-48 lead at the eight-minute media timeout. Then, Achter blew by her defender for a layup and a 15-point advantage.
Williams hit a layup, but the Falcons would score the next seven points to take a 20-point lead. Horne beat everyone down the floor, taking an Achter pass in the left corner and swooping in for a reverse layup. Then, senior Megan Thorburn drove left-to-right across the key and kicked the ball to Achter for a long jumper and a 67-50 lead.
When Mann worked against her defender in traffic and hit a turnaround and-one jumper, the Brown and Orange led, 70-50, and it was all over but the long bus ride home.
The Falcons held a 38-16 advantage in points in the paint, and BG also had margins in points off turnovers (14-7), second-chance points (14-5) and fast-break points (16-4).
BGSU held a 41-30 advantage in rebounding. Mann had a double-double, with a game-high 10 boards in addition to her 20 points. The senior also had four assists and two blocks to lead BG in four categories on the night.
Honegger had nine rebounds, while Flynn pulled down six and Horne five.
The Falcons return home for the next two games, beginning with a Sunday (Feb. 4) game vs. arch-rival Toledo. That game begins at 4:00 p.m.
