AKRON, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team put the clamps on the University of Akron's offense, picking up a 61-32 win over the Zips Wednesday night (Jan. 3). The game, the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams, was held at James A. Rhodes Arena.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 11-2 on the season and 1-0 in MAC action. BGSU has now won 26 consecutive games vs. conference foes. UA saw a six-game win streak come to an end, losing for the first time since November to drop to 7-6 and 0-1, respectively.
Senior Carin Horne had 15 points while classmate Ali Mann had 10 for the visitors. The Falcons shot only 37.3 percent from the field, but limited the Zips to just a 30.0% rate and 32 points, the lowest point total by a BG opponent since the 1974-75 season.
In a back-and-forth first few minutes, the lead changed hands three times and the Zips took an 8-7 lead. Over the game's final 35:50, however, the Falcons allowed Akron to score only 24 points.
Akron was 3-for-5 from the field during that 4:10 stretch to start the game, then made only two more field goals during the remaining 15:50 of the first half.
UA took a 9-7 lead at the 13:57 mark, when Mandy Holzer made the second of two free-throw attempts, but the Falcons then proceeded to go on a 13-1 run. Junior Kate Achter fed Mann for a fastbreak layup to tie the game, and a Horne jumper gave the Falcons the lead for good with 11:39 left in the half.
Horne was just getting started, however, as she had one of her patented hot streaks. The senior grabbed a defensive rebound on UA's next possession, then hit a jumper at the other end to force an Akron timeout.
The timeout did nothing to cool Horne off, however.
UA's Riana Miller split two free-throw tries on the next possession, but Horne answered with a long three-pointer. Then, she hit a pull-up jumper for her fourth basket in as many BG possessions. Those nine points over a span of 2:03 gave the Brown and Orange an 18-10 lead, and Achter's two charity tosses at the 7:20 mark gave BG a 10-point margin.
The Zips would scored the game's next three points, but senior Liz Honegger hit a long, left-side triple off of Achter's drive and dish. Then, sophomore Lindsey Goldsberry stole the ball from a UA opponent and fired a long pass ahead to senior Amber Flynn for a layup and a 25-13 lead.
Later in the half, Honegger had no fewer than three offensive rebounds on the same possession. She grabbed the third rebound and laid the ball in the hoop for a 30-15 advantage, and a Honegger steal led to a pair of Mann free throws with 29.6 seconds left and a 32-15 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Falcons gradually increased the lead. Mann grabbed a teammate's miss and banked the ball home for a 20-point lead, 37-17. Achter drove and drew a UA foul -- Sarah Tokodi's third of the game -- with 16:51 left, converting both resulting tosses.
Several minutes later, Goldsberry drove inside and kicked the ball to senior Megan Thorburn for a three-pointer from the left corner, and the Falcons' lead was 46-25 with under 12 minutes left.
Goldsberry, the lone Falcon not to score a point in the win, continued to contribute in other ways. She took a charge at the defensive end for Niki McCoy's third foul of the night. Then, after an offensive rebound by fellow sophomore Jasmine McCall, Goldsberry and Flynn worked the inside-outside game to perfection. The play ended with Goldsberry feeding Flynn inside for a layup, a 48-25 lead and a UA timeout.
Midway through the half, Flynn drove for another layup and a 50-25 advantage. When Achter hit freshman Sarah Clapper for a layup on a two-on-one break, BG was up by 27 points, 53-26, with 6:41 on the clock.
Several minutes later, McCall found freshman Tara Breske inside for a layup, and when freshman Laura Bugher hit a free throw with 1:58 left, the Falcons had a 30-point lead, 58-28. The Zips got four points over the final 84 seconds to reach 32 points on the night.
Horne and Mann were the only two players in double digits in scoring on the night. Thorburn added eight points and Flynn seven for the victorious Falcons.
For the Zips, McCoy scored nine points and Ashley Veal seven.
Horne and Mann each had six rebounds to lead all players in that department, as the Falcons held a 34-31 advantage in that category.
The Falcons now return home for the next two games, beginning with a Saturday (Jan. 6) contest vs. the University at Buffalo. Tipoff is 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
NOTES
* Akron's point total was the lowest by a BGSU opponent in nearly 32 years, since the Falcons' 77-25 win over Ohio Northern on Feb. 11, 1975.
* The Falcons allowed UA to make just 12 field goals while forcing 24 turnovers by the Zips ... BGSU committed only 10 turnovers, and held a 22-0 advantage in points off turnovers.
