BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Ohio University became the first visiting team to win in Anderson Arena in over two years, posting a 70-67 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon (Feb. 24).
With the win, Ohio improves to 16-11 overall and 9-6 in Mid-American Conference play. The Falcons, having lost to a MAC team for the first time since February of 2005, drop to 25-3 and 14-1, respectively.
The BG loss put a damper on an impressive achievement by Falcon junior Kate Achter, who scored her 1,000th career point in the game. Achter had 17 points to lead five double-digit scorers for the hosts.
The Bobcats' win snapped a number of lengthy BGSU streaks, including:
* an 18-game overall winning streak since a Dec. 19 loss to #1-ranked Duke;
* a 39-game win streak against MAC opponents (a school and conference record);
* a 29-game winning streak at Anderson Arena, the longest streak in the nation entering Saturday.
The Falcons had opened up an 11-point lead, 51-40, in the first five minutes of the second half before the Bobcats clawed back. Ohio scored eight consecutive points to get within three on a layup by Domenica Silva at the 11:29 mark. Silve paced four double-digit scorers for the 'Cats with 18 points.
Senior Carin Horne broke a scoring drought of 4:18 for the Falcons, grabbing an offensive board and laying the ball in, but OU's Lauren Kohn answered quickly with a layup at the other end.
The Bobcats would not go away, getting within a single point on a Silva layup with 8:05 left. Sophomore Jasmine McCall split a pair of free throws to give BG a 56-54 lead, but after several scoreless minutes of play, a driving layup by Kohn tied the game with 5:37 on the clock.

Again, Flynn drove and again, Silva was whistled for a foul -- her fourth of the day. This time, Flynn split her free-throw tries, and BG's lead was one, 59-58.
The Falcons forced a miss at the other end, and Achter's entry pass resulted in a short jumper by Flynn and a 61-58 lead with 3:45 left. Ohio missed another shot and the Falcons rebounded, but BG quickly turned the ball over as the teams headed to the final media timeout of the day.
Out of that timeout, Quintana Ward hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 61-all with 3:14 left. The Falcons misfired on a triple try of their own, and Rachel Frederick was fouled and hit both ends of a one-and-one opportunity. The Bobcats led, 63-61, with 2:39 remaining.
For the second time in as many BGSU-Ohio games this season, Frederick did not make a field goal. The sophomore, who was scoreless in the teams' first game (a 64-55 BGSU win on Jan. 13), was a perfect 10-for-10 from the stripe on Saturday, en route to 10 points.
After another BG miss and Ohio rebound, Kohn's driving layup gave the visitors a four-point lead with just over two minutes left. Again, the Falcons could not connect, and the 'Cats rebounded and worked some clock. After a BG foul with 1:26 left, Kohn made the first of her two free-throw tries, giving the visitors a five-point lead.
The Falcons missed again, but senior Liz Honegger grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 56.6 seconds left. Honegger hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to three points, 66-63.
BG was called for a foul with 47.4 seconds remaining, and Frederick hit both tosses. The OU lead was five points once again. Senior Ali Mann responded with a baseline drive and layup -- BGSU's first field goal in 3:08 -- and the Falcons took a timeout with 35.6 seconds left.
BGSU's full-court press on the ensuing inbounds play was successful, as Achter and Mann double-teamed Kohn in front of the Falcon bench, tying her up for a jump ball. The possession arrow favored BG with 32.1 seconds to go.
Mann's three-point try would not drop, but Honegger got another offensive rebound, and her putback made it a one-point game, 68-67, with 20.9 seconds on the clock.
After a Falcon timeout, the Bobcats' long pass resulted in Ward streaking downcourt and grabbing the ball just ahead of a pair of BG defenders. Ward missed her layup try, however, and McCall rebounded the ball and was fouled by Frederick with 15.7 seconds left.
McCall's free-throw try was no good, but the ball went out of bounds off an OU player. BG inbounded, and Achter's shot would not go, but the junior grabbed her own miss. Triple-teamed under the basket, she tried to fire a pass to a teammate in the left corner, but the ball went out of bounds, this time to the Bobcats with 7.0 seconds left.
Ohio inbounded the ball, and made several passes before BGSU could finally foul. Simone Redd hit two free throws with 1.5 seconds left, giving the 'Cats a three-point lead, and Horne's desperation shot from around midcourt was off target as the buzzer sounded.
Honegger and Flynn scored 12 points apiece for the Falcons, while Horne added 11. Mann had a double-double, with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Kohn scored 17 points for the Bobcats, while Bushby had 12. Silva had a double-double, with 10 boards in addition to her 18 points.
The Falcons led for nearly all of the first half, but BG's lead was never bigger than four points until the final 3:29 of the half. The Falcons had scored the first four points of the game, on an Achter pull-up jumper and a Honegger layup off Achter's entry pass.
A 6-0 OU run gave the visitors an 11-9 lead, but two Achter free throws started a six-point streak for the Falcons. Layups by Flynn and Mann gave BG a 15-11 margin.
McCall missed a shot but followed that miss, grabbing the rebound and laying the ball in, all in one motion. The athletic play gave the Falcons a 17-15 lead with 9:36 remaining in the half.
Silva, however, scored four consecutive points to knot the contest at 24-24 with 5:20 left before intermission. Achter got herself to the line again and knocked down a pair of free throws, but a three-pointer by Bushby at the 4:47 mark gave the Bobcats their first lead of the day, 27-26. Bushby was 4-for-4 from the floor in the first half and 5-for-7 in the game.
The Falcons, however, scored seven-straight points, beginning with a long three-pointer by Honegger, who took Achter's pass while standing near the "L" in the word "Falcons" at the left elbow and drilled an NBA-range triple.
Achter and Flynn worked the inside-outside game to perfection, as Flynn took Achter's pass, drew several defenders to her and kicked the ball back out to Achter for a jumper at the 3:58 mark. Achter returned the favor 30 seconds later, inbounding the ball to Flynn under the hoop, and the senior laid the ball home for a 33-27 Falcon lead.
Flynn's bucket began an offensive display which saw the Falcons and Bobcats combine to score on 10-of-11 possessions over a span of two-and-a-half minutes. In fact, BGSU scored on nine-straight possessions (seven field goals and four free throws), beginning with Achter's charity tosses at the 5:11 mark. BG did not have a scoreless possession until a turnover with just six seconds left in the half.
After Flynn's oft-mentioned hoop at 3:29, the lead fluctuated between four and six points until the 1:36 mark. Achter would score eight consecutive BG points, making history in the process. A driving layup by the junior gave BG a 35-29 lead at the 3:01 mark.
Silva converted a layup, but Acther got herself to the line and hit both tries with 2:24 left in the half. Again, Sliva scored on a layup at the other end, after a nice drive and dish by Ward. But, with 2:02 left before intermission, Achter again drove and scored, giving her 14 points for the game and 1,001 for her career. Just for good measure, she hit one more hoop before the half, with a layup after Horne's steal with a minute-and-a-half left until the break.
Kohn hit a three-pointer, and Horne's jumper with 58 seconds on the clock proved to be the final scoring of the first half.
The Falcons came out and opened up a 51-40 lead in the first few minutes of the second half, before the aforementioned 8-0 run by the visitors.
The teams scorched the nets in the first half, with BGSU shooting 64.0 percent (16-for-25) from the field and Ohio shooting 62.5% (15-of-24). Ohio shot 50.0% in the second half to finish with a 56.5% field-goal rate, while the Falcons made just 8-of-30 shots (26.7%) after the intermission to finish the day at 43.6%.
The Falcons close the regular-season slate with a Wednesday (Feb. 28) game vs. Miami University. The game will be 'Senior Night' at Anderson Arena, as BGSU's stellar senior class -- Flynn, Julie Gompers, Honegger, Horne, Mann and Megan Thorburn -- will be honored in pregame ceremonies. Fans are encouraged to arrive early, as the 'Senior Night' festivities are scheduled to begin at approximately 6:45 p.m., with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m.
NOTES
* The loss snapped BGSU's 18-game winning streak, the fifth-longest such streak in school history ... the Falcons had not lost since a Dec. 19 contest vs. Duke in Cancun, Mexico.
* The Falcons had not lost to a MAC team in over two years, since a 57-52 setback at Eastern Michigan on Feb. 19, 2005 ... BGSU's last home loss also came at the hands of EMU, a 51-48 setback the previous month (Jan. 12, 2005).
* The Falcons also saw a six-game series winning streak vs. Ohio snapped ... Ohio's last win over BG came on March 2, 2002, in the first round of the MAC Tournament in Athens, Ohio ... OU's last win in BG came that same season, a 78-69 overtime victory on Feb. 5, 2002 ... the Falcons still hold a commanding 41-19 lead in the all-time series with the Bobcats.
* Junior Kate Achter, as mentioned, surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career late in the first half of Saturday's game ... Achter became just the 22nd player in school history to reach the millennium mark, and only the eighth to do so prior to her senior season ... she now ranks 21st in BGSU history with 1,004 points.
* Achter is the fourth member of the current BGSU team to reach 1,000 career points ... James Madison is believed to be the only other NCAA Division I team that has four 1,000-point scorers on the roster.
* Senior Carin Horne's 11 points in Saturday's game give her 1,234 for her career, moving her into 12th place on the BG career list ... Horne entered the day tied with Melissa Chase (1,223) for 13th, but moved past Chase and Michelle Shade (1,233) in the Ohio game.
* Senior Ali Mann ranks second in career scoring at BGSU, while classmate Liz Honegger is fifth all-time ... Mann now has 1,719 career points and Honegger 1,469.
* Mann had 10 rebounds vs. Ohio, moving her into a tie for fourth on the BGSU career list ... Mann now has 862 career boards to match Chris Tuttle ... Honegger is third in school history with 872 rebounds as a Falcon.
