BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Senior Ali Mann spearheaded a 10-0 run late in the second half for the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, and the Falcons rode that run to a 73-62 win over the arch-rival University of Toledo Sunday (Feb. 4). The Mid-American Conference game was held at Anderson Arena.
With the win, the Falcons -- who did not lead for the first three-quarters of the game -- improve to 20-2 overall and a perfect 9-0 in MAC play. THe Rockets drop to 7-14 and 3-6, respectively.
BGSU extended several lengthy streaks in the victory. The Falcons have won 13 consecutive games since a Dec. 19 loss to top-ranked Duke. BG has now won 34-straight contests vs. MAC foes, and the Falcons have won eight consecutive meetings against UT. The win also marked the 27th in a row at Anderson Arena for the Brown and Orange.
BGSU trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, before cutting the deficit to just 38-35 at halftime. The Falcons did not take the lead until junior Kate Achter hit a pair of free throws with 10:19 left in the second half, and the lead changed hands five times before a three-point play by Mann gave the hosts the lead for good with 5:06 on the clock.
Senior Liz Honegger had a game-high 20 points to lead three double-digit scorers for the Falcons. Mann had 18 points and led BG with six rebounds, and Achter scored 15 points, including 11 at the free-throw line. Achter also had a game-high seven assists and committed just one turnover.
The Falcons forced 21 Rocket turnovers while committing just 12 themselves. BGSU held a whopping 37-11 advantage in points off turnovers in the game, including a 21-0 margin in that category in the second half.
For the visitors, Danielle Bishop scored 19 points, while Savannah Werner and Diana Reindl added 16 and 15, respectively.
The Rockets certainly had liftoff to begin the game, scoring the first four points and taking an 8-2 lead before BG head coach Curt Miller used a timeout with two-and-a-half minutes elapsed.
UT did much of its damage through offensive rebound in the early going. The Rockets began the game by making just 1-of-6 shots, but the visitors grabbed the rebound after four of their five misses during that time. In total, UT had seven of the game's first eight overall rebounds.
After missing on five of their first six shots, the Rockets connected on their next two, with hoops from Werner and Bishop to take that 8-2 lead. Neither team would score for the next few minutes, before Honegger hit a turnaround jumper in the lane. But, the Rockets soon began to heat up.
The visitors made three of their first nine shots on the day, but then connected on seven-straight shot attempts over a span of nearly four minutes. During that time, the Rockets went on a 15-4 run to take a 23-8 lead with 11:11 left in the half. The final five points of that run came on a Reindl three-pointer and a steal and pull-up jumper from Ta'Yani Clark. But, BG would come roaring back.
Achter hit two free throws at the 10:33 mark, ending a 7-0 UT run. Those tosses not only snapped the Rockets' run, but also began a 10-0 run for the home team. Achter then spotted Honegger for a three-pointer midway through the half, and the junior point guard came up with a steal on the next possession. Achter fired the ball ahead to senior Megan Thorburn, who was fouled and made both ensuing free-throw tries.
A minute-and-a-half later, Honegger stepped outside, took a Mann pass and hit a triple in front of the BGSU band. Suddenly, Toledo's lead was only five points, at 23-18. And, when Thorburn took a charge for a UT offensive foul just before the 7:53 media timeout, the Falcons seemed to have all of the momentum.
As was the case for much of the game, however, the Rockets had an answer. UT forced a BG turnover out of the timeout, with Bishop making the steal and heading downcourt for a breakaway layup.
Achter grabbed a teammate's miss and laid the ball in, cutting the lead back to five points, and Mann split a pair of free throws to make UT's lead 25-21 with 6:52 remaining in the half.
Werner, however, threw an inbounds pass off of a BG player to herself, and laid the ball in to give the Rockets a six-point lead. Sophomore Lindsey Goldsberry fed senior Amber Flynn for a layup, but a Werner scoop shot was followed by a Bishop three, and the visitors' lead was back to nine points, 32-23, with 5:23 left in the half.
Again, BG would battle back. Goldsberry made a steal, drew a foul and hit both free throws. Then, soph Jasmine McCall's pass found the open Mann for a long three-pointer from the left elbow, cutting the Falcons' deficit to 32-28.
Tamesha Scotton scored for the visitors, but Flynn saw a wide-open Carin Horne under the basket, and fired the ball to her classmate for a layup. Reindl responded with a jumper, but Goldsberry drained a triple from the left corner to cut UT's lead to 36-33. The margin was still three points as the teams headed to halftime.
The Rockets opened the second half with a Reindl layup, but Honegger hit a three-pointer, and then had a layup at the 17:41 mark to bring BG within a single point, 41-40. Werner answered with a layup, but two Achter free throws got BG within one again.
Reindl followed her own miss to give UT a three-point lead at the half's first media timeout, and Bishop came off a screen for an impressive catch-and-shoot three-pointer, giving the Rockets a 48-42 lead. The Falcons missed a three-point try of their own, and Mann was whistled for her third foul of the game on the rebound.
Neither team would score for more than two minutes, before Goldsberry grabbed an offensive rebound, whirled and fired a pass to Mann underneath the hoop for a layup and a 48-44 deficit. Reindl got free for an easy layup, but two more Achter free throws sent the Falcons into the next media break down four.
Those free throws began a 7-0 run that gave the Falcons the lead. Achter found Flynn for a quick layup at the 11:40 mark, and after a shot-clock violation -- UT's second of the game -- BG got the ball back. Achter was fouled and split her tosses to bring the Brown and Orange within a point.
Then, Achter ripped the ball from Scotton's hands, raced downcourt and was fouled at the other end. This time, she made both free-throw tries to give the Falcons the lead for the first time.
Yet again, though, the Rockets had an answer, as Bishop hit another three-pointer. The teams exchanged scoreless possessions before an Achter jumper tied the game with 9:04 remaining.
After a Mann steal, the senior converted a driving layup to give BG the lead, before Werner tied the contest with a hoop at the other end. A Horne free throw gave the home team the lead, before Werner struck again, with a trey at the 6:44 mark. UT, however, would score only four more points the rest of the way.
Horne's pass found Flynn for a layup that tied the score, and, with just over five minutes left, Achter dove to the ground for a steal at midcourt and got the ball to Goldsberry. Goldsberry passed ahead to Mann, who scored to give the hosts the lead for good and drew a foul in the process. Mann's free throw completed the three-point play and began a stretch in which the senior would score 10-straight points for the Falcons.
After Goldsberry tied up a Rocket opponent for a jump ball at the 3:58 mark, BG had possession as the teams took the final media timeout of the afternoon/evening. Out of that timeout, the Falcons broke a UT press, and Achter split the defenders on a three-on-two break. The junior flipped a pass to Mann for a layup and a five-point lead.
Goldsberry rebounded a UT miss, and at the other end, Flynn made the extra pass to Mann for a left-elbow triple and a 66-58 lead that prompted a Rocket timeout with 2:54 left.
Bishop hit another trey, but the Falcons got the ball to Mann once again, and the senior banked home a left-side jumper. Goldsberry came up with another steal, and Honegger hit a back-breaking three-pointer to give the hosts a 71-61 lead with 1:11 on the clock. Achter would make two free throws in the final minute, and a Werner charity toss completed the scoring.
Horne had seven points, while Flynn scored six. Goldsberry had five points, hitting all three of her shots (a three-pointer and two free throws) on the day. The sophomore also led all players with five steals, and had four rebounds and four assists as well.
Honegger had a BG-leading four three-pointers in the win, while Mann was 2-for-4 from long range. Bishop had four triples for the visitors.
Toledo became the first Falcon opponent to shoot over 50 percent in a game this season, going 26-for-49 (53.1%) from the floor. The Falcons shot 52.2% in the second half en route to a 46.0% success rate for the game.
BG went to the foul line 26 times, making 20, while the Rockets were 4-for-8 in the contest.
The Falcons will remain at home, concluding a two-game homestand with Wednesday's (Feb. 7) game vs. Ball State. That game, a matchup of MAC divisional leaders, will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson.
