Farnsel and Hoffman Named BGSU Senior Scholar Athletes Of The Year

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Seniors Curtis Farnsel (cross country) and Lauren Hoffman (softball), along with juniors Pete Winovich (football) and Stephanie Swiger (volleyball), took home top honors at the 2007 BGSU Scholar-Athlete Banquet Saturday evening.

Four Falcon teams also were lauded for their academic achievements. The men's soccer team received the award for Most Improved GPA for teams with 20 or more participants for the second consecutive year. The Falcons of head coach Fred Thompson have a team GPA of 2.79 through the 2006 fall semester. Last season they finished with a 2.70 GPA.
The men's golf team (2.79 GPA) team received the award for Most Improved GPA for teams with 20 or fewer participants. Head coach Garry Winger and the Falcons improved their team GPA by .20 points after finishing with a 2.59 GPA last season.
The women's cross country team earned the award for the Highest GPA for large teams (teams with over 20 participants). Head coach Cami Wells and her runners have a cumulative GPA of 3.51. All but one of the cross country team has over a 3.0 GPA.
The women's golf team won that same award for teams with fewer than 20 participants, finishing the season with a 3.56 cumulative GPA. Every member of the golf team has a GPA of 3.24 or higher.
Former Falcon women's basketball member, Angelene Bonner, was named a Distinguished Alumna. Bonner earned a spot on the MAC All-Freshman team in 1987. She earned second-team All-MAC honors her sophomore and junior seasons and first team accolades her final year in the Orange and Brown.
One other note, Gary Swegan earned the Distinguished Service Award as a long-serving member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee.
A total of 90 BGSU student-athletes were honored for achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better, with 23 of those student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0.
