December 12, 2009 | Football
DALLAS (FWAA) – Bowling Green State University senior Freddie Barnes was named to the Football Writers Association of America All-America Team, announced this afternoon (Dec. 12) by the FWAA.
The FWAA All-America Team, the second-longest continuously-published team in major college football, was announced on ABC-TV for the sixth straight season during a one-hour show that was sponsored by AT&T. The FWAA has named an All-America team in some form since 1944.
The Chicago Heights, Ill., native is the first Falcon to earn All-America First-Team honors since place-kicker Brian Leaver was named to the Associated Press First-Team in 1994.
Much has been made of Barnes' accomplishments in 2009. He led all wide receivers with 138 receptions and 16 touchdowns, while finishing third in yards with 1,551. His 138 catches are tied for the third most in NCAA history and are four shy of the NCAA mark of 142 for catches in a season held by Manny Hazard (Houston) since 1989.
For his efforts Barnes was recognized as one of the nation's top wide receivers this past week, earning a trip to Orlando, Fla., and the ESPN Award show, as a finalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation's most outstanding wide receiver.
Barnes earned national honors throughout the year, being named the national wide receiver of the week on three different occasions by the College Football Performance Award (CFPA). His most notable performance came on Oct. 10 versus Kent State when he helped the Falcons erase a 12-point fourth quarter deficit after posting 22 catches for 278 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-35 win over the Flashes.
A week later the team captain posted 10 grabs for 160 yards and three more touchdowns in a 31-17 win at Ball State.
Just a few of his other most outstanding moments include catching 15 balls in the season opener versus Troy, 17 passes versus Marshall, 14 catches for 172 yards and a touchdown versus Central Michigan and 12 catches for 197 yards and two touchdowns versus Akron.
