Athletic Department Holds Honors Night

The Bowling Green Athletic Department held its annual Athletic Honors Night Saturday, awarding various student-athletes and teams for their success throughout the year. Former men's basketball player Dr. Crystal "Boo" Ellis served as the keynote speaker and 201 student-athletes were honored for holding a 3.0 grade point average or higher, along with 16 that have a perfect 4.0.
Dr. Ellis retired as the superintendent of Toledo Public Schools in 1996 and was the first African-American to play basketball for Bowling Green. In 1971, he was inducted into the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame and received the "Alumni of the Year" award in 1993.
Football player Sinisa Vrvilo and women's basketball player Lindsey Goldsberry were awarded the Falcon Medal of Honor, while soccer player Ryan Davis and softball player Hayley Wiemer were named the Senior Scholar Athletes of the Year. As well, football player Craig Rutherford and women's basketball player Laura Bugher were named Falcon Club Junior Athletes of the Year.
Vrvilo holds a 3.33 grade point average in human development, serving as the football team's kicker over the past two seasons. He connected on 24-of-35 field goals in 2007 and 2008, making 88-of-90 extra points. He was a third team All-MAC selection as a junior and also was named MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week.
Goldsberry holds a 3.85 grade point average in early childhood education and is the winningest basketball player - male or female - in MAC history with 114 wins over four years. She started all 34 games for the Falcons in 2008-09 and led the team in steals.
Davis has a 3.59 grade point average in exercise science and started seven soccer matches for the Falcons in 2008. As a midfielder and defender, he posted one career assist in two seasons at Bowling Green, starting 16 times overall.
Wiemer holds a perfect 4.00 grade point average in adolescent/young adult/secondary education. She is the school's career record holder in home runs, slugging percentage and walks, ranking in the top five in RBI and batting average offensively, as well as strikeouts, saves, wins, and shutouts on the mound.
Rutherford holds a perfect 4.00 grade point average in adolescent/young adult/secondary education as well. The football team's long snapper, he has played in 23 games in his career, including 12 in 2008.
Bugher maintains a 4.00 grade point average in early childhood education and played in 21 games off the bench for the women's basketball team in 2008-09. She has played in 65 games over the past three seasons, averaging 1.0 point per contest.
Along with those awards, the men's soccer (2.94 gpa) and women's cross country (3.61 gpa) teams were awarded for the highest team grade point average for men and women, while the men's golf (2.91 gpa) and women's soccer (3.29 gpa) teams were awarded for the most improved grade point average. Karen Donaldson, who serves as the scholarship/grants coordinator for financial aid, was named the Distinguished Service Award winner.
