Falcons Tie Duquesne, Nil-Nil
September 12, 2009 | Men's Soccer
Jeff Smoker and the Bowling Green State University defense recorded a shutout as the Falcon men's soccer team battled host Duquesne University to a 0-0 tie Saturday night (Sept. 12). The double-overtime game, the final contest at the Duquesne Invitational, was held at Rooney Field in downtown Pittsburgh.

The result leaves the Falcons with a 1-3-1 record on the season, while the Dukes are now 2-2-1 on the year.
Smoker, a redshirt freshman, earned the first complete-game shutout of his young career. He and the defense faced a total of 24 shot attempts by the Dukes, but kept the home team off the scoreboard.
Smoker made six saves, tying his season (and career) high, and the Falcons also were credited with one 'team save' on the night. DU outshot the Falcons by a 24-11 count, including a 7-1 margin in shots on goal.
For the hosts, Colin Thorp made one save in goal.
Smoker and sophomore Tanner Fink were named to the Duquesne Invitational All-Tournament Team for their efforts on the weekend.
"This was much better than last night," said Falcon head coach Eric Nichols. "Obviously, the result tonight is better than the Richmond game (a 3-1 loss on Friday night). But, last night's game was disappointing because we thought we played very well. We battled, but we had lapses at moments which cost us the game.
"Tonight, we battled, and played exceptionally well at times. But, even when we weren't playing great, we didn't have any of those lapses and we didn't give Duquesne anything. It would have been nice to get out of there with a win, obviously, but this was a good effort by the guys. We just need to keep working hard, and keep trying to improve every time we take the field."
The game featured a total of 44 fouls and four yellow cards. BG was whistled for 24 of the fouls, and each team had two cautions.
Senior Cameron Hepple had a team-high five of the Falcons' 11 shots, and had BG's lone shot on goal. Three different players -- Tyler Tompkins, Ben Horner and Joshua Patterson -- had five shots apiece for the home team, with Tompkins putting three of his attempts on goal and Horner two.
BGSU concludes a stretch of five consecutive matches away from home with a Friday (Sept. 18) match at Dayton. Then, the Brown and Orange will return home to face IPFW on Sunday, Sept. 20. That game will begin at 2:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
FALCON NOTES
* As mentioned, redshirt freshman Jeff Smoker's complete-game shutout was the first of his career ... Smoker now has a goals-against average of 1.34 in 335 minutes of action this season to date ... he has started all five matches.
