January 05, 2010 | Football
Freddie Barnes, a senior on the Bowling Green State University football team, has accepted an invitation to play in the 85th Annual East-West Shrine Game in Orlando Fla. He will serve as a member of the East squad on Jan. 23, 2010.
Barnes, who led the nation in receptions with 155, smashed the previous NCAA mark for catches in a season, held by Manny Hazzard (142) since 1989. The Chicago Heights, Ill., native also led the country in touchdowns (19) and finished the year with a school record 1,770 receiving yards and 1,965 all-purpose yards.
The fifth-year senior had eight games of 10-plus catches and went over the 100-yard mark on as many occasions, including the contest versus Idaho in the Humanitarian Bowl, where he posted H-Bowl records for catches (17), yards (219) and touchdowns (19).
He finished the year, scoring touchdowns in each of his last eight games (school record), and in fact, had 17 scores in that span, including three touchdowns versus Kent State, Ball State and Idaho.
Throughout 2009 he led the team in receptions and yards in 12 of 13 contests, including a 22-catch performance versus Kent State, one reception shy of the NCAA record.
