The two-day, five-team tournament featured a hidden-dual format. The invite, hosted by Toledo, also included Cleveland State, Detroit and Duquesne, in addition to the Falcons.
BGSU players combined to go 7-2 in singles play and 4-2 in doubles action on Saturday. For the weekend, the Falcons had an overall record of 24-6, going 17-4 in singles and 7-2 in doubles.
Senior Christine Chiricosta and sophomore Maddy Eccleston each went a perfect 6-0 on the weekend, while freshman Nikki Chiricosta was 5-1. Freshman Emily Reuland and sophomore Mary Hill each were 4-2 over the two days.
Junior Jessica Easdale was 3-2 in the tourney, while sophomore Jade Johnson, in her first action of the 2010-11 season, was 2-0, winning a pair of doubles matches.
On Saturday, the Falcons took two-of-three doubles matches from both Toledo and Cleveland State. Christine Chiricosta teamed with Eccleston for an 8-6 win vs. the Rockets and an 8-3 triumph over the Vikings. Nikki Chiricosta and Reuland split their matches, with a convincing 8-2 victory vs. CSU.
Hill teamed with Johnson for a win over the Rockets, while Easdale and sophomore Katie Grubb suffered a narrow 9-8 loss against the Vikings.
In the A flight of singles, each Falcon played just once on Saturday. All three of those BGSU competitors -- the Chiricosta sisters and Reuland -- won in straight sets against a Duquesne opponent.
Nikki Chiricosta lost only two total games in her win over Judy Li, while Reuland downed Samantha Noble by identical 6-4 scores. Christine Chiricosta pulled out a close match against Ana Mungo, winning by scores of 6-4 and 7-5.
Hill won twice in B-flight action, losing just one total game in a sweep of Detroit's Elena Strakhova. Then, she swept UT's Amanda Border. After winning in a tiebreaker in the opening set, she did not lose a game in her second-set win over her Rocket foe.
Eccleston and Easdale each won against a Detroit opponent, with Easdale losing only five combined games.
Under an unofficial scoring system used for the tournament, each of the three-match groupings was worth a point, similar to doubles scoring in a typical dual match. For example, BGSU took two of the three singles matches vs. Duquesne in the A flight on Saturday, so the Falcons were awarded a point. Under this scoring system, the Falcons accumulated the most points of any of the five teams on the weekend. BGSU had nine points, followed by Toledo (8), CSU (4), Duquesne (3) and Detroit (0).
The Rocket Invitational was the last of three fall tournaments for the Falcons. Selected team members will head to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the ITA Midwest Regionals, which begin on Oct. 21.
