BGSU Athletics To Recognize All-Time Greats By Honoring Jersey Numbers

Criteria For Honoring A Jersey
Nominate A Former BGSU Athlete

Bowling Green, Ohio - In the rich 94-year history of BGSU Athletics, there have been many great individual careers and achievements. In an effort to honor accomplishments of former Falcon student-athletes, Bowling Green Athletics will be reviewing those stellar careers with the intention of recognizing a select group by honoring their jersey numbers.

Bowling Green's athletic success, from conference and national championships to individual accolades, is well-documented. The retirement of jerseys will complement the tradition of BGSU's Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

“Bowling Green has a long and distinguished athletic history,” Greg Christopher, Director of Athletics, said. “While we already recognize individuals who have excelled through the Athletics Hall of Fame, we wanted to take it another step forward. Retiring the jerseys of our legends is a great way to honor and recognize Falcon greats.”

BGSU Athletics is seeking the assistance of alumni, Falcon Club members, former student-athletes and friends of the university. To date, four BGSU jerseys have been retired: Paul Miles' #29 in football, George McPhee's #9 in ice hockey, Nelson Emerson's and Brian Holzinger's #19 also in ice hockey, and Nate Thurmond's #42 in men's basketball.

This type of recognition will not be an annual occurrence. With this in mind, BGSU Athletics is asking for nominations from the BGSU community.

Nominations can be submitted online here or by sending a letter directly to BGSU Athletic Communications (address below). The deadline for nominations is July 1, 2010. Honorees will be announced and recognized beginning in the 2010-11 school year.
