Falcons have 5 of the 13 players named to the team
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team was well represented on the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, to say the least. The Falcons had no fewer than five of the 13 student-athletes named to the team, announced Wednesday (April 7) by the conference office.
Seniors Tara Breske, Laura Bugher and Tamika Nurse, redshirt junior Maggie Hennegan and junior Lauren Prochaska all were voted to the team, which is the result of voting by the faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. The 13-woman squad is the result of ties in the voting.
BGSU, with five players chosen to the team, is the only institution with more than one representative. The Falcons become the first-ever school to have five All-MAC first-team selections.
Breske is one of three players named to the team for the second-straight year. Buffalo's Kourtney Brown and Central Michigan's Kaihla Szunko are also repeat selections to the squad.
Bugher and Hennegan are the only two honorees with a perfect 4.00 grade point average.
Akron's Jolene Tamboue, Ball State's Audrey McDonald, Eastern Michigan's Tavelyn James, Ohio's Jenny Poff, Toledo's Naama Shafir and Western Michigan's Molly Dwyer rounded out the team.
Breske, a native of Temperance, Mich. (Bedford HS), was a team co-captain in 2009-10, earning that honor for the second-straight season. She played in 32 of BGSU's 34 games, making 29 starts. Breske was fourth on the team in scoring and third in rebounding, averaging 8.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. She led the Falcons in both steals and blocked shots, with 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks per game, and also paced the Brown and Orange in offensive rebounds. Breske was named to the MAC's All-Tournament Team after averaging 13.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 2.0 spg and 2.0 bpg in the Falcons' three tourney wins. She finished her career ranked third in school history in blocked shots.
In the classroom, Breske has a 3.65 cumulative GPA through the fall 2009 semester, as an exercise science major.
Bugher, a native of Greenwood, Ind. (Lutheran HS), played in 23 games off the bench, averaging 1.1 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. She shot 64.7 percent from the field, making 11 of her 17 shots on the year. Bugher had 1.2 ppg and 1.5 rpg in MAC games. She, along with Hennegan, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team, earning second-team honors. Bugher and Hennegan were the only MAC players named to that team.
Bugher, an early childhood education major with an intervention specialist minor, has a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA.
Hennegan, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (St. Ursula), was a team captain in 2009-10. Hennegan, who sat out the 2008-09 season after transferring from Saint Louis Univ., was voted a captain by her teammates before ever playing in a game at BGSU. She played in all 34 games in '09-10, making eight starts, and averaged 4.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Hennegan was sixth on the team in scoring and fourth in rebounding. She averaged 4.7 ppg and a team-leading 7.0 rpg in the Falcons' three MAC Tournament wins, and joined Bugher on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team, earning second-team honors.
Hennegan has a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA as a health care administration major.
Nurse, a native of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (St. Thomas More), averaged 10.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game in her lone playing season at BGSU. After sitting out last season as a transfer from the Univ. of Oregon, she started all 34 games for the Brown and Orange, and led the team in assists while ranking third in scoring. Nurse went 43-of-112 from three-point land, and was third on the team in both three-pointers made and three-point FG percentage (.384). She led the Falcons in free throws attempted and shot .773 from the line (133-of-172). Nurse finished third in the MAC in assist/turnover ratio (1.40), fifth in three-pt. FG pct., seventh in assists and 14th in FT pct. She had back-to-back games of 20 points or more late in the season, earning MAC Player-of-the-Week honors on March 1.
Nurse, a broadcast journalism major, has a 3.61 cumulative GPA.
Prochaska, a native of Plain City, Ohio (Jonathan Alder HS), had a pretty good year as well. She was named the MAC's Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, and also was voted the MAC Tournament's MVP. Prochaska led the team in scoring and rebounding, with 17.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Her total of 609 points set a school single-season record. Prochaska also set a BG record with 92 three-point field goals made, increasing her career total to 241 (also a school record). She led the MAC in three-point FG pct. by a wide margin, shooting .449 from long range, and was second in the league in both scoring and free-throw pct. (.899) while placing third in three-pointers per game (2.71). Prochaska was named the MAC Player of the Week four times on the year. She has started all 102 of BGSU's games in her career, and already ranks third on the school career scoring list with 1,699 points.
Prochaska, a sport management major, has a cumulative GPA of 3.27.
The Academic All-MAC honor is given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify for consideration, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
The Falcons of head coach Curt Miller posted an overall record of 27-7 and a MAC mark of 14-2. BGSU won an outright conference regular-season title for the sixth consecutive year, and won the MAC Tournament for the fourth time in the last six seasons.
