Stroh Center Home Openers Announced
April 09, 2010 | Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Volleyball
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Athletic Department has finalized agreements for the opening home games of the 2011-12 seasons for the sports of volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball, which will be the teams' first year competing in the Stroh Center.
The volleyball team will play its first match in the Stroh Center on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 vs. Michigan State. The men's basketball team will play its home opener, which will also be the season opener, in the Stroh Center on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011 vs. Howard and the women's basketball team will open the Stroh Center on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 vs. Purdue. Starting times for all three contests are yet to be determined.
“We are excited about opening the Stroh Center and the unique first-game opportunities for our teams and fans,” BGSU Director of Athletics Greg Christopher said. “These three games will be special and set the stage for the new home of Falcon basketball and volleyball. Two of the opponents are high-profile Big Ten teams and the Howard game is a connection to former Bowling Green President Dr. Sidney Ribeau and the important role he played in getting the Stroh Center started.”
In volleyball, Bowling Green is 3-6 all-time against Michigan State, having last played Sept. 8, 2001, almost 10 years to the date from the Stroh Center opener. The last time the volleyball team hosted a Big Ten team came in the BGSU Invitational on Sept. 10, 2005 when the Falcons lost a five-set match to Ohio State.
In women's basketball, Bowling Green and Purdue have split six games in the all-time series. Purdue won the last game between the two programs, an 81-78 decision on Dec. 21, 1992 but Bowling Green has a two-game home winning streak, having defeated Purdue Dec. 7, 1984 and Nov. 23, 1991. That latter contest was Jaci Clark's first game as head coach and came against a Purdue team that was ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press poll.
Bowling Green and Howard have never played each other in men's basketball but the game was put together in part due to the influence of Ribeau. He was named President of BGSU in 1995 and spent 13 years in that position before being named President of Howard University in 2008.
The Stroh Center will be the new home of the volleyball and basketball programs and is set to open in time for the 2011-12 season. Kerm and Mary Lu Stroh announced the largest single private gift in BGSU history on March 1, 2008, an $8 million donation in which $7.7 million was earmarked for the new Convocation Center. Groundbreaking took place on Sept. 3, 2009 and the facility is currently under construction along Wooster Street in Bowling Green.
