Paige Berger Sets Home Run Record But Falcons Lose To Ohio

Game 1 Boxscore - Ohio 10, Bowling Green 9 (8 innings)
Game 2 Boxscore - Ohio 9, Bowling Green 1
Athens, Ohio – Freshman phenom Paige Berger showed a flair for the dramatic Saturday afternoon in Bowling Green's softball doubleheader at Ohio but the Falcons were upstaged by the Bobcats in 10-9 and 9-1 losses.
Berger set a new program record for home runs in a season with her 12th and she did it in the most clutch of situations. With the opening game tied at 8-8 in extra innings, her solo homer in the eighth put the Falcons on top 9-8. But Ohio had the last laugh as Lauren Gellerman and Jordan Paden led off the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back home runs to walk off with the win.
Bowling Green had to work hard just to send the game to extra innings after Ohio scored seven runs in the bottom of the second to erase a 6-1 deficit. Rachel Proehl's RBI single in the third made the score 8-7 and it looked like the Falcons would take the lead in the sixth.
Karmen Coffey, Berger, and Susan Sontag singled to open the sixth and load the bases with nobody out. Ohio, though, got force outs at the plate on the next two batters before Adrienne Dick reached on an error by the shortstop to plate the tying run.
BGSU started quickly with two runs in the first, scoring on a wild pitch and a Berger sacrifice fly. After Ohio scored one in the bottom of the first, the Falcons answered back with four in the top of the second. Melissa West drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Hannah Fulk followed with an RBI single. Berger then drove in two more with a bases loaded single that made it 6-1.
Ohio took the lead with seven runs on just five hits in the bottom of the second, getting help from two walks and an Emily Wethington grand slam.
Bowling Green outhit Ohio 13-11 in the game as the top five spots in the batting order went a combined 13-for-24, driving in six runs. Berger had four RBI to go with her eighth inning home run.
Ohio dominated game two, scoring three runs in the second and another in the third to build a 4-0 lead. After a Coffey homer in the fourth made it 4-1, the Bobcats finished the game with a five-run fifth that included Ohio's second grand slam of the day, this one off the bat of Melissa Bonner.
With the wins, Ohio improves to 18-27 overall and 13-5 in MAC play. Bowling Green falls to 11-25 overall and 7-11 in MAC. The Falcons will complete the regular season next weekend as they play at Buffalo Friday at 1 p.m. before playing at Kent State Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
