BGSU Athletics Begins Top 10 Moments Countdown!
June 21, 2010 | Football
Throughout the summer, we'll be releasing our list of the Top 10 Moments of the 2009-10 athletic year at BGSU. The list was compiled and voted on by members of the Athletics Department administration and the Athletic Communications office. We'll release the list one at a time until announcing the No. 1 moment of the year on Aug. 2. Today, though, we'll take a look at a few notable moments that just missed the cut.
Reunion for the 1959 National Champion Football Team
The 1959 Bowling Green football team went undefeated and was named the Small College National Champions. In October, BGSU honored the team for the 50th anniversary and all players were presented with championship rings. The story of the event can be read here: 1959 National Championship Reunion
Baseball Team Wins 11 Straight To Get Back Into MAC Race
The BGSU baseball team won its third consecutive MAC East Division Championship in 2010 and that title would not have been possible without an 11-game winning streak midway through the season. The Falcons had started MAC play just 2-6 but swept Toledo to begin a torrid stretch. The Falcons beat Dayton, Western Michigan, and Cleveland State in non-conference games, while sweeping Ohio and taking two in a row from Miami to get back to the top of the league standings. Bowling Green scored 128 runs during the winning streak, an average of 11.6 per game.
Football Team Opens Clawson Era With Win Over Troy
Under new head coach Dave Clawson, Bowling Green hosted Troy to start the season. The Falcons didn't get off to a quick start, falling behind 14-0 midway through the second quarter. But Bowling Green came back with 31 unanswered points and the magical season of Freddie Barnes began (15 catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns). The story can be read here: Falcons Top Troy, 31-14, To Open Clawson Era
Football Scores With 39 Seconds Left To Defeat Buffalo On National Television
Bowling Green overcame a 13-point second half deficit as Tyler Sheehan hooked up with Freddie Barnes with 39 seconds remaining to give the Falcons a 30-29 victory over Buffalo on ESPN2. BG's special teams came up with two blocked punts to help the cause. The story can be read here: Falcons Thrill On ESPN2 With Comeback Win
Susy Grunden Birdies Final Two Holes To Set School Scoring Record
Freshman golfer Susy Grunden posted one of the best seasons in program history and capped it off with a remarkable finish at the MAC Tournament. Needing to shoot a 76 (+4) in the final round of the MAC Tournament, Grunden was 6-over through 16 holes. She birdied the par-3 17th and then followed up with a birdie on the par-4 18th to finish the year with a 78.53 average, edging out Jennie Schnipke's 78.54, set in 2003-04. Paige Berger Breaks Softball's Single Season Home Run Record
Another BGSU freshman, Paige Berger, broke a storied record in another sport, hitting 12 home runs during the 2010 season to break the school record. Assistant coach Hayley Wiemer held the record with 11 homers but Berger's extra-inning shot against Ohio gave her the record.
