John Weinert and 'The Coat'
Throughout the 2010-11 season, the BGSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will be celebrating the storied history of venerable Anderson Arena, as we are 'Closing the Doors of the House That Roars' and preparing for the opening of the Stroh Center in the fall of 2011.

Several people have submitted memories of BGSU men's basketball coach John Weinert. Weinert posted a record of 146-133 during his 10 seasons (1976-77 through 1985-86) at the helm, but he is perhaps best known for 'The Coat' ...

BRAD
My favorite memories are of the packed house for the 1978-1982 games under Coach John Weinert.
His tradition of putting on the “jacket” when he knew the game was in the bag was awesome.
The fans chanting and the excitement during that time was all about being a Falcon!!
CHUCK
I remember Coach John Weinert getting the crowd fired up when he would put his coat on when he knew that BG had a win in sight. It was his way of saying, 'we won this one, let's go home!!!!'
DOUG
Coach Weinert and the coat:
When Coach Weinert knew we had the game in the bag, he would walk down to the end of the bench and put his sport coat on, and the “House Would Roar” !
JIM
I played Tuba in the BG Marching & Pep Bands in the early '80s. I remember David Greer that would get more assists in a game than most of our opponents could score points, Bill & Joe Faine both lighting up the Anderson scoreboard from the outside, and BIG John Flowers (FLO) owning the paint, in “the day”! John also used to drive around campus in a pretty sweet Camaro with FLO on his license plate!
But one of my fondest memories was when BG head coach John Weinert would go to the bench during pre-game warm-ups, he would take off his usually very LOUD sport jacket and drape it over his chair at the bench. He would then coach the game in his shirt and tie. And at some point during the final minutes of the game when BG would seemingly have the victory “in hand”, the capacity crowd would start chanting “COAT, COAT, COAT” and continue to do so until Coach Weinert would go over to his chair, pick up the sport coat and put it on signifying the FALCON VICTORY was sealed. Then the crowd would erupt into a frenzy as the last nail was drilled into our opponent's coffin of defeat!
Anderson Arena, you will be missed!
