Chiricosta Becomes Winningest Player in BGSU History; Falcons Down Butler, 7-0
January 30, 2011 | Women's Tennis
In a match that was much closer than the final score indicated, the Bowling Green State University tennis team picked up a 7-0 win over Butler University Sunday afternoon (Jan. 30). The non-conference dual match was held at the Butler Tennis Bubble.
BGSU is now 4-1 on the season, and the Falcons went a perfect 3-0 over the weekend.
"This was an epic match," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "The score might have said 7-0 at the end, but there were some extremely close matches with dynamite intensity. It just happened that we were able to close things out and come out on top in all of the close matches."
In Sunday's victory, senior Christine Chiricosta posted a win at the top singles flight, in the process becoming the winningest player in BGSU tennis history. Chiricosta now has a combined career total of 154 wins as a Falcon, breaking the record of 153 set by Deidee Bissinger (1997-2000).
Chiricosta and her doubles partner, sophomore Maddy Eccleston, battled the Bulldogs' Stephanie McLoughlin and Gabrelle Rubenstein through a tight match at the top flight, before the BU duo came out on top by the narrow score of 9-8.
The other two doubles flights saw close matches contested as well, but BGSU won both to earn the day's first point. At the second flight, Dean's two freshmen, Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland, picked up an 8-6 win. Sophomores Mary Hill and Katie Grubb won at the third flight, by an 8-5 outcome.
In singles play, Christine Chiricosta battled Natali Jaimes through a two-hour, 40-minute match. Jaimes took the opening set by a 4-6 score, but Chiricosta battled back to take a 7-5 win in the second set and a 6-4 verdict in the third. The win moved her past Bissinger onto the top of the BGSU record list.
"Christine really battled for her historic win today," said Dean. "She played from behind for much of the match, against a big hitter with a lot of power, and did a great job to come back and get the win for us."
Eccleston had won her singles match long before Chiricosta's match finished up. The Falcon sophomore lost only one game in her fifth-flight win over Rubenstein. At the third flight, Nikki Chiricosta downed her opponent, McLoughlin, in straight sets, while Hill closed out Caroline Hedrick in the minimum two sets at the second flight.
Junior Jessica Easdale and BU's Brittany Farmer battled through two closely-contested sets, but it was Easdale coming out victorious in both. The longest match of the day came at the fourth flight, where Reuland dropped her opening set in a tiebreaker to the Bulldogs' Gabriella Bobrowski, but battled back to win the final two sets. Reuland and Bobrowski battled for three hours and 25 minutes before the Falcon freshman emerged as the winner.
BGSU also won two singles exhibitions and one doubles exhibition match, contests that were not included in the overall scoring.
The Falcons return to action next weekend, heading to Michigan State for a Friday (Feb. 4) match before returning to Northwest Ohio to host Cincinnati on Saturday evening (Feb. 5). Friday's match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. in East Lansing, while Saturday's match will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
