Opening Strong
Although the Falcons were unable to secure a win on Saturday, the team still finished the weekend undefeated with a record of 1-0-1. This marks the first time Bowling Green has gone without a loss in the first two games since the 2008-09 season. That year, the Falcons opened the season at home with a 4-2 win against RIT, and a 3-3 tie against Niagara the following night. The last time Bowling Green opened a season with two straight victories was the 2004-05 campaign. BG defeated Union twice on the road, including a 1-0 shutout by Jordan Sigalet.
Scoring Strong
Three Falcons are currently averaging over a point-a-game in the young season. Sophomore Bryce Williamson has scored in consecutive games while freshman Ryan Carpenter added a goal and three assists over the weekend. Sophomore Camden Wojtala also added a goal and three assists over two games, tying him with Carpenter for the team lead in points with four. Freshman Dan DeSalvo and junior Bobby Shea have also scored for Bowling Green, marking five different goal scorers in two games.
The Last Time
The Falcons head to Alabama-Huntsville this weekend to take on the Chargers in non-conference action. The Falcons were undefeated against Huntsville last season in three games, including a 5-1 victory in the RPI Tournament last November. The win marked the programs 800th victory. The Falcons outscored Huntsville 14-7 last season, including goals by Falcons Ryan Peltoma, Andrew Wallace, Mike Fink , Brett Mohler and Jake Sloat, who each scored their first career goals against the Chargers last year.
Opening Weekend Numbers
The opening weekend against UConn was loaded with special teams play for both programs. The Falcons and Huskies each committed 17 penalties in two games, equaling 68 total minutes of special teams play. Overall, 12 different Falcons committed at least one penalty, including Junior Bobby Shea, who led Bowling Green with three penalties for six minutes over the weekend. Bowling Green went 3-17 (.176) on the power play in two games, getting goals from three different players (Camden Wojtala, Bryce Williamson and Ryan Carpenter). On the penalty kill, the Falcons killed 13 of 17 (.764) UConn chances.
Wojtala Comes Up Big / Carpenter Named Rookie of the Week
Sophomore Camden Wojtala came into the 2011-2012 season with a career total of 16 points. He already has four this season after the Falcons opening weekend against UConn. The Michigan native tallied one goal on the power play and three assists over the two game series, giving Wojtala a share for the team lead in points. Wojtala is also a (+2) on the season. Freshman Ryan Carpenter has delivered on high expectations in the early part of the year, mimicking Wojtala's stats including goals, assists and plus minus rating. Carpenter's goal marked the first time a freshman scored for Bowling Green in an opening game since defenseman Kevin Schmidt did it back in 2005. Fellow freshmen Dan DeSalvo notched his first career goal in game two of the series, while freshman Adam Berkle registered his first career point with an assist.
Low Numbers on the Rise?
Going into the 2011-2012 season, the Falcons offense carried over questions stemming from last year. As individuals, not one Falcon had over 20 career points. Junior Marc Rodriguez led the team with 20 career points while Senior James McIntosh and Brett Moehler came in close behind with 18 and 17 points respectively. Since the start of the season, the Falcons have averaged three goals-a-game, and sophomore Camden Wojtala has notched four points to put his career total at 20. Rodriguez has not played yet this year due to an injury.
As a team, the Falcons also ranked last in offense among the rest of the CCHA. The Falcons only managed 1.46 goals-per-game last season, while ranking last on the power play with a 10.2 percent conversion rate.
Taking a Look at UAH
Huntsville opened the 2011-12 season with a record of 0-4-0, splitting time at home and on the road. The Chargers dropped the opening weekend series at home against Lake Superior State, losing each game by a single goal (3-2 and 2-1). Huntsville didn't fair much better on the road, dropping two games to nationally ranked Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. The Broncos had their way with UAH, outscoring the Chargers 11-1 over the weekend.
The power play has not been kind to Huntsville, as they have yet to score a single power play goal in 14 opportunities. All four of the Chargers goals this season have been scored at even strength. The Chargers have also been unable to score a single goal in the third period thus far in the young season.
UAH has had to rely heavily on their young players to score in the first two weeks of the season. Sophomore Mac Roy leads the team in goals with two, while freshman Ben Reinhardt leads the team in points and assists with three.
