EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost 5-1 to Michigan State Friday night, extending their current losing streak to three games. Five different players scored for the Spartans, while junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 22 of 27 shots in the loss.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, thanks to a wrist-shot tally from junior Kevin Walrod just 20 seconds into the game. The goal marked Walrod's sixth of the season, and ninth of his career.
Michigan State tallied another goal roughly five minutes later, when junior Dean Chelios moved around Hammond and slid home his third goal of the season.
The Falcons responded with just over two minutes remaining in the opening stanza, when freshman Ted Pletsch rifled a slap shot past Spartan goalie Drew Palmisano. The goal marked Pletsch's first of his career, and cut the Spartan lead to 2-1.
The Spartans started the second period with a power play due to a Falcon bench minor (Too many men) at the end of the first frame. The Spartans committed a penalty towards the end of their power play, causing some brief 4-on-4 hockey. Bowling Green had just started their man advantage, when senior Brett Perlini streaked in on Hammond and beat him for the short-handed goal. The goal marked Perlini's fourth of the season, and gave Michigan State the 3-1 lead.
Michigan State tallied again in the closing minutes of the second period, on a tip-in goal from freshman Matt Berry. Berry's tally marked his fourth goal of the season, and increased the Spartan to 4-1.
Michigan State freshman Brent Darnell scored his second goal of the season with just over one minute to play in the game to push the score to 5-1, and secure the win for the Spartans.
Pletsch's goal in the closing minutes of the first period ended Bowling Green's 138 minute scoreless streak, marking the Falcons first goal since Ryan Carpenter's game tying tally against Miami (Nov. 19)
The five goals allowed by the Falcons ties the high for the season, matching Ferris State's goal total against Bowling Green in a 5-3 Bulldog win on November, 5.
The loss drops the Falcons to 6-9-2 overall on the season, with a record of 1-9-1-1 in conference play. The win puts Michigan State's overall record at 9-5-1, with a record of 5-4-0-0 in CCHA action.
The Falcons are back on the ice tomorrow night in an encore match against Michigan State. The puck drops at 6:05 p.m.
