BOXSCORE
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to Michigan State Saturday night, completing the Spartans weekend sweep. Michigan State registered three even-strength goals in the win, with one marker coming on the power play. Junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 29 of 33 shots in the loss.
Similar to last night, the Spartans lit-the-lamp first, netting a goal at the 6:12 mark of the first period. Sophomore Greg Wolfe slammed home a rebound goal for his fifth tally of the year, giving the Spartans the early 1-0 lead.
The Falcons responded with a goal from senior Cameron Sinclair with just over five minutes to play in the first period. The Ontario native took a feed in the slot from freshman Adam Berkle, and ripped a wrist shot past Spartan sophomore goaltender Will Yanakeff. The game-tying goal marked Sinclair's third tally of the year, and ninth of his career.
The second frame remained scoreless until the 15:48 mark of the period, when junior Dean Chelios fired a shot past a sprawling Hammond. The tally gave Michigan State the 2-1 advantage, and gave Chelios his fourth goal of the season.
The Spartans scored again on a sharp angle shot from sophomore Lee Reimer early in the final frame. The score marked Reimer's team-leading seventh goal of the year, and pushed the score to 3-1 in favor of the Spartans.
Michigan State senior Daultan Leveille broke through the Falcon defense and added an insurance goal at the 13:33 mark of the third period, securing the 4-1 Spartan win.
The Falcons have not defeated Michigan State since the 2008-09 season, when Bowling Green shut out the Spartans at the BGSU Ice Arena 4-0 (Feb. 21, 2009).
The loss drops the Falcons overall record to 6-10-2 on the year, with a record of 1-10-1-1 in CCHA action. The win improves the Spartans record to 10-5-1 overall, with a record of 6-4-0-0 in conference play.
The Falcons are back in action this weekend in a home and home series with Western Michigan. The puck drops at 7:05 both nights, with Bowling Green hosting the Broncos in the Friday night contest.
