Falcons Perched In Fourth After Day One At MAC Championships
February 23, 2011 | Women's Swimming & Diving
The first day of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships is in the books, and after two events Wednesday night (Feb. 23), the Bowling Green State University Falcons claim fourth place.
The meet, held at Ohio University's Aquatic Center in Athens, Ohio, is spread out over four days. The first night featured two relay competitions. BGSU relay teams finished fifth in both races.
The 200 medley relay began festivities, and the Falcons established quickly that they were ready to go toe-to-toe with the MAC's best. Alexa Harris, Alexis Kain, Vicky Yu and Sarah Reinink combined to finish in 1:43.03. The time beat the Falcons' season-best time by over two seconds, and they ended the race less than a half-second behind Eastern Michigan.
The team from Miami captured top honors in the race. Meanwhile, the defending champion Toledo Rockets suffered an early setback when their team was disqualified. The disqualification costs Toledo the points that would have been earned, and the decision could have a significant impact on the standings going forward – Toledo's team was in second place after three of the race's four legs.
The second and final race of the evening was the 800 freestyle relay. The Falcons had only raced the 800 free relay once previously this season, at the Eastern Michigan Invitational. Tonight, BGSU carved 21 seconds off of that first effort and finished in 7:26.29. Andrea Brown, Vicky Yu, Emily Bennet and Megan Bomicino participated, with Bennet producing the fastest split (1:50.54).
Emphasizing the importance of the events in the first race, Toledo's team won the 800 free relay, while Miami placed third.
Overall, Bowling Green earned 28 points for each of their fifth-place finishes and reside in fourth place with 56 total points. They are two points ahead of Akron and Eastern Michigan, who are tied for fifth, and eight points ahead of Ball State. The Falcons trail Buffalo by four points and Ohio by ten.
Miami leads the meet thus far with 72 points, while Toledo occupies last place with 40. Had UT not been disqualified and maintained second place in the 200 medley relay, they would be in first with 74 points.
On Thursday (Feb. 24), the teams will compete in morning and evening sessions. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., the morning events will include the preliminary races in the 50 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley. The finals of those races will be held beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the evening session. The second group of events will also include the 200 freestyle relay. Bowling Green has the third-best time in the MAC to date in that event.
