A Record Falls As Falcons Complete Day Two Of MAC Championships
February 25, 2011 | Women's Swimming & Diving
The Bowling Green State University record time in the 200 freestyle relay fell on the second day of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, held in Athens, Ohio on Thursday (Feb. 24).
The Orange and Brown racers finished second to Ohio's MAC Championship record time; however, the team beat the NCAA's “B” standard of 1:32.76 for championship qualifying. They also earned BGSU 34 points for their efforts.
The 200 free relay concluded a day that saw the Falcons place six swimmers in championship final races. It also saw Bowling Green slip to seventh in the overall standings.
Megan Bomicino earned a berth in the championship race of the 500 freestyle after coming within an eyelash of breaking the BGSU record in the event during the preliminary race. Her preliminary time (4:54.57) was just .32 seconds shy of the current record. Bomicino finished the 500 free final in 4:56.19 to earn eighth place overall and 11 points.
Two Falcons scored points in the 200 IM championship race. Alexa Harris qualified for the top heat with a sizzling 2:04.13 in the preliminary; that is the third-best time in BGSU history. Sarah Burston's time of 2:05.46 also earned a spot in the final. In the evening's championship race, Harris finished eighth (2:06.47), while Burston placed 16th, completing the race in 2:06.82. The two combined for 12 points.
The final individual swimming event of the day was the 50 freestyle. Three BGSU athletes qualified for the championship race with excellent preliminary times. Graduate assistant coach Meg Richardson's record time in the event was safe – but barely.
Sarah Reinink (23.41) and Brittany Szekely (23.44) established the second- and third-best times by a BGSU swimmer in the event. Also, Emily Bennet became the fourth current Falcon to land on BGSU's all-time top ten list in the 50 free, joining Carrie Enright, with a time of 23.64 seconds.
Szekely, a freshman from Missoula, Mont., surpassed her own preliminary time to place ninth in the final. She earned nine points when she finished in 23.41 seconds. Bennet tied for tenth after also surpassing her preliminary time. In the final, Bennet swam the 50 in 23.51 seconds. Sarah Reinink completed the swim in 23.66 seconds to earn 14th place.
Overall, Bowling Green is seventh with 131.5 points. They rest ahead of Ball State (83.5) and trail sixth-place Buffalo by 12 points. Akron is 15 points ahead, in fifth place, while Eastern Michigan (160) is in fourth.
The meet hosts, Ohio University, are currently running away with first place. The Bobcats' 271 points are 76 ahead of second-place Toledo. Miami, in third place, is 96 points back.
On Friday (Feb. 25), the teams again face two sessions. In the morning session, each team will race the preliminaries for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. The three-meter diving preliminaries will also be held in the morning.
The evening session will consist of the championship finals in each of those events. The 400 medley relay championship will also be held in the evening.
