Two More BGSU Records Fall On Day Three Of MAC Championships
February 26, 2011 | Women's Swimming & Diving
The women of the Bowling Green State University swimming team broke two more school records in competition on Friday (Feb. 25) but remained in seventh place after the third day of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.
Rom qualified for the consolation section of the championship final and nearly eclipsed her career-best, as well. In the prelims, she swam a time of 1:04.38, then knocked a second off of that time in the final. She swam the 100 in 1:03.25 to earn tenth place.
Kain took part in the other record-breaking event, as well. Kain, along with Alexa Harris, Sarah Burston and Emily Bennet, combined for a time of 3:44.47 in the 400 medley relay. That eclipsed the old record of 3:45.15 set two years ago; Burston was on that team, as well.Three Falcons raced in the championship finals of the 100 butterfly. Sarah Burston led the trio with an eighth place finish after completing the swim in 55.38 seconds. Vicky Yu earned tenth place, finishing in 55.64 seconds, while freshman Erica Cutler earned points in her first MAC championship meet. Her time (56.53) secured 15th place.
Emily Bennet placed 16th overall (1:52.27) in the 200 freestyle final, while Alexa Harris matched that finish in the 100 backstroke after finishing in 57.22 seconds. She qualified in 56.91 seconds.
The final championship event of Friday evening was the 400 IM. No Bowling Green swimmers qualified for the final during the morning session. Kristina Roop came closest, placing 17th overall in 4:28.63, less than one second below the qualifying line.
Saturday's final day of competition will again feature a morning session beginning at 11:00 a.m. and a 7:00 p.m. evening session. Four preliminary races will be held in the morning – the 200 yards versions of the backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke, as well as the 100 freestyle.
In the evening, the teams will race the championship finals of those four events, as well as the finals of the 1650 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay. The relay will conclude the 2011 championship meet.
