Christine Chiricosta becomes BGSU career leader in singles wins
The Bowling Green State University tennis team picked up wins at all three doubles flights and in each of the top-five singles matches en route to a 6-1 win at the University of Detroit Mercy Sunday afternoon/evening (Feb. 27). The non-conference dual match was held at the Wimbledon Racquet Club in St. Clair Shores, Mich.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 8-3 in dual-match play this season to date, and BG has won four of the last five matches. The Titans drop to 0-9.
BGSU swept the three doubles matches, including a pair of wins from teams that had not played together in competition in months. A familiar duo, senior Christine Chiricosta and sophomore Maddy Eccleston, picked up a come-from-behind victory at the top flight.
At the second level, sophomores Katie Grubb and Jade Johnson -- playing as a team for the first time this season -- downed Detroit's Erin Weldon and Julia Fernandes by an 8-3 count.
And, in third-flight action, the duo of freshman Nikki Chiricosta and sophomore Mary Hill swept their Titan foes by an 8-0 outcome. Hill and Nikki Chiricosta had not played together since Oct. 23.
In singles play, BGSU picked up five wins, including four in straight sets. The most dominant victory came courtesy of freshman Emily Reuland, who did not lose a single game in her fifth-flight dismantling of Weldon.
Eccleston was not far off Reuland's pace, as the BG soph lost only one game in her two sets against Raina Halabi. Eccleston's win came at the fourth flight.
Nikki Chiricosta and Hill won in straight sets at flights two and three, respectively. Christine Chiricosta was also a winner at the top flight, downing Carolina Salas Espinosa after the two players had split their first two sets.
Christine Chiricosta's singles win gave her sole possession of the school record in that category. She now has 82 career singles victories, moving past Stefanie Menoff (2006-09) on that list. Chiricosta, already the BGSU leader in combined career wins, now has 163.
The Falcons are now idle from competition until March 19, when the team will head across the state for a match with Youngstown State University.
