Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University Department of Athletics recognized its student-athletes Saturday evening for its annual Honors Night, held in Olscamp Hall. More than 250 student-athletes were honored during the evening.
More than 230 student-athletes were named to the Academic Honor Roll for carrying a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Student-Athletes were also honored for receiving a conference or national award, as well as for taking part in the leadership class, being a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, or for being inducted into the inaugural class of Chi Alpha Sigma Ohio Xi -- the National College Athlete Honor Society.
The department also handed out its annual awards and Steve and Rhonda Melchi received the Distinguished Service Award. Mark Miller, a 1978 BGSU graduate and former football player, was named the Distinguished Alumni and he was the keynote speaker.
The women's tennis team took home two awards as the program received the award for having the highest female team grade point average (3.75) and for having the largest improvement from a year ago (increasing from 2.99). The baseball team earned the award for having the highest team grade point average among male teams (3.06 gpa) and the men's cross country team was the most improved (bumping from a 2.86 a year ago to a 3.05 gpa this year).
The Falcon Club Junior Scholar-Athlete Award is given to the junior student-athletes (one male and one female) who have distinguished themselves in the classroom and that award went to baseball player Pat Martin (3.8 grade point average) and softball player Melissa West (4.0 grade point average).
The Senior Scholar-Athlete Award is given to senior student-athletes (one male and one female) who have distinguished themselves in the classroom and that award was earned by swimmer Liz Harper (3.7 grade point average) and men's basketball player Joe Jakubowski (3.33 grade point average).
The Athlete of the Year award was presented for the first time and was given to the top male and female athletes in the BGSU Athletics Department. Baseball player Jon Berti and women's basketball player Lauren Prochaska were named the first winners of the award.
Finally, the Falcon Medal of Honor is the highest award given by the Athletics Department and encompasses everything that a BGSU student-athlete should be. The winners of the award were tennis player Christine Chiricosta and hockey player David Solway.
