With the victory, the Falcons improved to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in MAC matches on the season. The Cardinals dropped to 6-12 and 0-4, respectively.
Chiricosta, who already held the BGSU career records for singles wins and combined victories, teamed up with sophomore Maddy Eccleston for an 8-3 victory at the top doubles flight on Saturday afternoon, moving into sole possession of first place on the doubles list as well. Chiricosta now has 85 career doubles wins, breaking the mark of 84 originally set by Jenny Cheung (1995-98).
Chiricosta made quick work of Georgina Thomson at the top singles flight, increasing her career totals to 85 singles wins and 170 overall victories at BGSU. The senior co-captain did not lose a single game in her sweep of Thomson.
Sophomore Mary Hill also posted a pair of shutouts in her fourth-flight win over Dena Boulieris, with her match concluding several minutes before Chiricosta's. Eccleston and freshmen Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland each won their respective singles matches in two sets.
As mentioned, Christine Chiricosta and Eccleston won at the top doubles flight, opening up a 3-0 lead en route to the win over Kylee Johnson and Kristel Sanders. Sophomores Katie Grubb and Jade Johnson won by an 8-4 outcome at the second flight, winning their last three games to pull away from Boulieris and Thomson.
In third-flight action, Hill and Nikki Chiricosta also won by an 8-4 score, topping the BSU duo of Sarah Hebble and Lauren Pickrel.
When singles play began, it didn't take long for Hill and Christine Chiricosta to close out their matches. Hill quickly downed Boulieris at the fourth level, while Chiricosta swept Thomson. Soon after Chiricosta's match ended, her sister wrapped up a victory at flight number three. Nikki Chiricosta lost only two total games in her win over Hebble, with that win giving the Brown and Orange the fourth point to clinch the match victory.
Reuland picked up a win soon afterward, as she dropped a total of only three games against the Cardinals' Paola Rodriguez. BSU did pick up a point at the sixth flight, as Pickrel eked out a win over junior Jessica Easdale. Pickrel captured the first set by a 6-1 count, before Easdale came roaring back for a 6-2 victory in the second set. With the Falcons having clinched the overall match win, Pickrel and Easdale played a tiebreaker, with the BSU sophomore taking a 10-5 decision.
In the final match to finish, Eccleston downed Sanders, 7-5, in a lengthy opening set at the second flight, then won the first five games of the next set on the way to a 6-1 victory.
The Falcons hit the road for a pair of matches next weekend, beginning with a Friday (April 8) dual at Western Michigan. Then, the Brown and Orange will step outside of conference play for Saturday morning's (April 9) match against UIC in the Windy City.
