Tennis Falcons Fall at WMU, 5-2
April 08, 2011 | Women's Tennis
Westward swing continues with Saturday match at UIC
Host Western Michigan University narrowly won the doubles point, then seized momentum early in singles play en route to a 5-2 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday afternoon (April 8). The Mid-American Conference dual match was held at the West Hills Athletic Club.
With the victory, the Broncos improve to 10-10 on the season, including a 3-2 mark in MAC action. The Falcons drop to 11-6 and 2-3, respectively.
The Broncos took the doubles point after a pair of closely-contested matches. Western's second-flight team of Amanda Moccia and Maggie Remynse earned an 8-1 victory, but the other two doubles matches were close throughout.
At the third flight, WMU's Maria Nivia and Jill Pastunink rallied from a 6-4 deficit to tie the match at 6-6 against BGSU's team of sophomore Mary Hill and freshman Nikki Chiricosta. The Hill/Chiricosta duo took a 7-6 lead, but the Broncos battled back to tie, then surged ahead for a 9-7 win.
The top-flight match saw senior co-captain Christine Chiricosta and sophomore Maddy Eccleston battle WMU's April Kerr and Nini Sujashvili through another close match. The Falcons forged ahead several times, only to see the Broncos respond. BG went up by a 5-3 count, but Western tied the match at 5-5. Again, the Falcons went ahead, taking a 7-5 lead, but the Broncos knotted things at 7-7, before Chiricosta and Eccleston won in a tiebreaker, 8-6.
In singles play, BGSU's two freshmen each picked up wins. Emily Reuland defeated Rachel Denny in a third-set tiebreaker, capping off an impressive comeback at the fifth flight. Reuland dropped the first set, 6-3, then trailed Denny by a 4-1 score in the second set. But, the first-year Falcon reeled off five-straight wins to capture the set, then downed Denny, 10-7, in the 'breaker.
Nikki Chiricosta battled Pastunink through a match that lasted nearly three hours. The combatants went to tiebreakers in each of their first two sets, splitting 7-6 decisions. Chiricosta won the first set by taking the tiebreaker, 7-5, but Pastunink evened the match with a victory in the second-set tiebreaker. The super-tiebreaker was just as closely-contested as the first two sets, with Chiricosta pulling out a 10-8 victory.
At the second flight, Eccleston had battled Sujashvili to a third set before succumbing. Sujashvili won the first set with relative ease, 6-0, only to see Eccleston nearly sweep her in the second set. Eccleston took a 6-1 decision before her opponent pulled out the third set.
In top-flight action, Christine Chiricosta played Remynse to a tiebreaker in the opening set, but WMU's top player pulled out the set, then won the second set to take the match. Western's Nivia and Moccia picked up wins over Hill and junior Jessica Easdale, respectively, in the other singles matches.
The Brown and Orange will continue west for a Saturday (April 9) match with perennial Horizon League power UIC. That non-conference dual is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. locally (noon Eastern).
