• According to philsteele.com the Falcons have the 10th youngest roster in the country with 66.7 percent of the roster underclassmen.
Scouting the Offense
Quarterback Matt Schilz will be making his 30th start of his career this weekend versus Massachusetts. Schilz, a junior, threw for over 3,000 yards last season and 28 touchdowns, all career-bests, and has thrown for 6,733 yards and 43 touchdowns in his career. He leads an offense that ranks 11th in the MAC in scoring (22.7) and seventh in total offense (401.9).
It's hard to say who Schilz's top target is this year, with five different players recording double digit receptions this season. Shaun Joplin (27 rec., 395 yards), Chris Gallon (26 rec., 269 yards), Ryan Burbrink (26 rec., 205 yards) and Alex Bayer (22 rec., 294 yards) lead the way.
At running back the Falcons will depend on Anthon Samuel. Samuel, the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year, has already surpassed 1,500 yards in his career and has nine 100-yard games in his first 16 contests. Last week versus the RedHawks he ran for a career-high 171 yards as the Falcons totaled 251 yards on the ground.
Scouting the Defense
The Falcons return 10 starters from the 2011 team and are led by senior defensive tackle Chris Jones. Jones has 25 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and 9.0 sacks on the year. Jones currently leads the country in sacks and is second in tackles for loss.
As a team, the Falcons rank first in the MAC in scoring defense (19.1) and total defense (330.6). BGSU held Miami to 256 yards of offense (averaged 394.5 coming into the game) and a total of three yards rushing on 20 attempts.
Scouting the Special Teams
Brian Schmiedebusch, a 2011 first-team all-conference punter a year ago, will once again handle all punting duties. The junior is averaging 41.5 yards per punt this season and has a 43.9 yard per punt career average.
The field goals and extra points have been a rough spot this season for the Orange and Brown. Through seven games the Falcons have used two different kickers and are 3-for-8 on field goals and 18-for-20 on extra points.
Miami Recap
Bowling Green ended a 15-year drought at home against Miami and improved to 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference by cruising to a 37-12 win over the RedHawks at Doyt Perry Stadium last Saturday.
The Falcons dominated on both sides of the ball. On offense, Bowling Green notched 486 yards of offense, which was split nearly evenly (251 rushing, 235 passing) and was an efficient 9-for-14 on third down.
On the other side of the ball, the Falcons' defense created three turnovers and six sacks. It held Miami's rushing attack to only three net yards on 20 carries and only 256 yards overall.
Anthon Samuel had a career-high 171 rushing yards, while Chris Jones continued his dominance up front with five tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
Running For The Wins
Over the last three contests BGSU is 3-0 with wins over Rhode Island (48-8), Akron (24-10) and Miami (37-12). Helping the Falcons to those wins was a dominate rushing attack. BGSU produced at least 200 yards rushing in all three contests and have run the ball 127 times for 749 yards and six touchdowns in that span, an average of 249.7 per game.
vs. Rhode Island 39-206
at Akron 44-292
vs. Miami 44-251
Stopping Run For The Wins
In that same span the BGSU defense has completely shut down the rushing attacks for each of the last three opponents, holding the three teams combined to 187 yards (62.3/game) on the ground on 78 carries (2.4/rush).
vs. Rhode Island 32-96
at Akron 26-88
vs. Miami 20-3
Think That's Good?
While holding a team to just 62.3 yards rushing per game is extremely good, over the last six quarters of action the opposing team may have just been better off taking a knee. In the second half versus Akron, combined with the entire contest with Miami, the BGSU run defense has “allowed” minus-20 yards rushing on 28 attempts. Versus Akron in the final 30 minutes the Zips ran the ball eight times for minus-23 yards and held the RedHawks to just three yards on the ground on 20 carries.
The UMass Series
Saturday's contest will be the first between the two schools.
Just Win Baby
The Falcons have won three straight contests for the first time since 2009. That year they finished the season with four straight victories to advance to the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho. The Falcons have not won five straight games since 2004.
Under Center
Quarterback Matt Schilz will be making his 30th start of his career for the Orange and Brown. While still a junior, Schilz is nearing in on several BGSU school records.
• Is sixth is passing yards (6,733)
• Is fifth in passing attempts (1,021)
• Is fifth in passing completions (609)
• Is fifth in passing touchdowns (43)

Jones has already been named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week twice this year and has six straight games with at least one sack. The defensive tackle leads the country with 9.0 sacks and is second with his 13.5 tackles for loss.
Of the 25 tackles Jones has been involved with this season, 17 have resulted in no gain or negative yardage -- and the total minus yardage on those plays is minus-74 yards. The eight “positive” plays have gained just 25 yards (five (x2), three (x4) two, one).
Jones'n For Sacks
For the third straight year, Chris Jones has led the Falcons in sacks. The senior led BGSU with 6.0 sacks in 2011 and 8.5 sacks in 2012. Jones Named MAC East Defensive POW
For the third time this season Bowling Green State University football member Chris Jones has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts versus Miami.
Jones recorded five tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, while holding the RedHawks to just 12 points and one touchdown in the BGSU victory. Jones and the defense also held Miami to 256 yards of offense, including three yards on the ground on 20 carries.
This is the third time this season the defensive tackle has won the award. He was first recognized in week two after recording 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in a win versus Idaho. The following week he had 2.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble versus Toledo.
Under Pressure
Chris Jones leads a defense that has been getting after the quarterback this season. In fact, the Falcons are second in the MAC with 20 sacks on the year. In the last two games BGSU has posted 10 sacks (four vs. Akron and six versus Miami).
Defense ... Clap, Clap
That pressure has helped the BG defense get off the field in a hurry. Dating back to the second half with Akron, the Falcon defense has either forced a turnover or a three-and-out in 11 of 17 drives. In those 11 drives the Falcons have allowed 29 yards on 33 plays.

• Three kick returns for touchdowns.
• Three punt returns for scores.
• Have blocked 11 kicks.
• Produced two All-MAC returners (BooBoo Gates and Eugene Cooper).
• Produced two All-MAC Punters (Brian Wright and Brian Schmiedebusch)
• Successfully converted on two fake punts.
