Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Department of Athletics held its annual Athletics Honors Night Saturday night, recognizing and awarding student-athletes for their successes in and out of competition.
The Department gave out numerous awards throughout the evening and honored a number of supporters of the program as well.
The evening began by honoring the 210 student-athletes who carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and the 24 who hold a perfect 4.0. From there, 31 new members of Chi Alpha Sigma Ohio Xi (National College Athlete Honor Society) were recognized and received their cords.
The Student-Athlete Leadership Class was recognized, followed by the awarding of the highest team GPA awards. The women's tennis team earned the female award with a 3.69 grade point average and the men's cross country team garnered the male award with a 3.33 grade point average.
From there, the department awarded supporters of the student-athletes. Jill Carr, the Senior Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, was presented with the Distinguished Service Award for her contributions to the lives of BGSU's student-athletes. Former swimmer, William Primrose III, who serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees, was given the Distinguished Alumnus Award and he gave the keynote speech.
Following Primrose's speech, Champions Circle donors were recognized, as were all student-athletes who received conference athletic awards throughout the year. At that point, individual awards were given out to student-athletes.
Volleyball player Kari Galen (3.727 grade point average) and men's soccer player Zach Lemke (3.607 GPA) were named the Junior Scholar-Athlete Award winners, while women's basketball player Maribeth Giese (4.0 grade point average) and baseball player Patrick Martin (3.7 grade point average) earned the Senior Scholar-Athlete Awards.
Women's basketball player Alexis Rogers and baseball player Jon Berti were named the department's Athletes of the Year. For Berti, it was the second consecutive year in which he won the award.
Finally, the Falcon Medal of Honor was presented. The highest honor given to a student-athlete at BGSU, the Falcon Medal of Honor captures athletic success, academic success, and service to the community together. Swimmer Sarah Reinink and baseball player Patrick Martin were presented with the 2011-12 Falcon Medals of Honor.
