NCAA Database of APR Scores
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department continues to thrive academically in the Academic Progress Rate (APR), as released by the NCAA today.
Sixteen of the Falcons' 18 sports have multi-year APR rates of 950 or above and seven posted a perfect 1000 single-year rate in the latest report for the 2010-11 year. As well, seven teams posted their best multi-year score since the APR began in 2004-05. All 18 of BGSU's teams were comfortably above the NCAA's minimum score of 900 to receive scholarship limitations or postseason bans. The women's tennis and swimming programs at Bowling Green have the highest APR scores in the Mid-American Conference for their respective sports.
“The data released today represents the continued hard work of our student-athletes in the classroom,” Mark Shook, BGSU's Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Student-Athlete Services, said. “These results represent a total team effort -- from our student-athletes committed to their academic pursuits, to our coaches who recruit and support them, to the support staff we have put around them.”
For the second consecutive year, seven BGSU teams posted a perfect single-year rate. The men's cross country, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, swimming, tennis, and volleyball teams all posted a 1,000 for the 2010-11 year. For men's cross country, it marks the second consecutive perfect single-year rate. The women's golf, swimming, and tennis team all posted perfect single-year scores for at least the third consecutive year.
From a multi-year perspective, 16 teams scored a 950 or better. The tennis program continues to have a perfect 1000, the same score it has received every year of the APR, while swimming (996) and women's golf (991) were both above 990. The softball team had a 988 and women's soccer had a 987, followed by women's cross country and volleyball, each with a 986. The baseball and women's basketball teams both scored a 975 and gymnastics had a 974.
In all, 11 of BGSU's 18 sports posted scores equal to or better than a year ago. The largest increases came from the men's cross country program (improving from a 935 to a 963) and the men's soccer program (climbing from a 955 to a 969). Strong increases were also seen by football (up 10 points for the second consecutive year to a 951), baseball (up eight points to 975) and volleyball (up six points to 986). The softball team's improvement to 988 (up four points from 984) marks the fourth consecutive year in which the team has shown an increased score. The baseball, football, and men's soccer programs have all improved for three consecutive years.
The football, men's cross country, men's soccer, softball, women's soccer, swimming, and tennis programs all posted their best multi-year rates ever. The BGSU tennis program was awarded with public recognition a week ago for ranking among the top 10 percent of all tennis programs in Division I.
APR scores are based on retention and eligibility of each scholarship student-athlete. Each student-athlete can earn four points per year – one point for first-semester eligibility, one point for first-semester retention, one point for second-semester eligibility, and one point for second-semester retention. The total points earned are then divided by total points possible and the decimal place is dropped for the APR score.
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every NCAA Division I athletics team. The most recent scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, and 2010-11 academic years. The goal of academic reform is improvement, not punishment. Not only does academic reform ensure accountability for student-athletes, teams and institutions, but it also provides fairness by considering individual circumstances per team and school.
