BGSU to play four games in NCAA exempt tournament in November/December 2013
Bowling Green State University will take part in the 2013 Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge, playing a total of four games in the NCAA women's exempt tournament. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced the eight-team field and groups for the tourney on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 21).
The Falcons' first three games in the tournament will take place in Columbus, as The Ohio State University will host one pool of teams. BGSU will play each of the other three teams in the round-robin pool – OSU, Marist College and Monmouth University – on three consecutive days between November 22-27, 2013.
Then, on Sunday, December 1, 2013, all eight teams in the tournament will head to Springfield, Mass., for the final day of action. The Falcons will take on Saint Bonaventure University as part of the neutral-site showcase at the MassMutual Center.
"Our program is excited to participate in the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge," said BGSU head coach Jennifer Roos. "There are so many benefits to playing in this event, including great competition and three games within close proximity for our fans to travel. Plus, there are some additional story lines. This event will have a postseason feel even though it will be played in late November and early December."
In addition to the Ohio State University pool, the University of Connecticut will host a pool, with Boston University, Old Dominion University and SBU joining the Huskies. The NCAA women's exempt tournament is sponsored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
"We are excited to announce the first annual Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Basketball challenge," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "This is a great platform to celebrate women's athletics as well as showcase some of the best college basketball programs in the country."
BGSU has never met Monmouth in women's basketball, but the Falcons have faced Ohio State 15 times, Saint Bonaventure six times and Marist on one occasion. BG played OSU and Marist in back-to-back games in the 2009 Preseason WNIT (Nov. 15 and 21, 2009), and the Falcons also played that same season (Dec. 12, 2009).
BG assistant coach Jesse Fleming spent six seasons on the women's basketball staff at SBU, and former Falcon standout Kate Achter is currently a member of head coach Jim Crowley's staff with the Bonnies. SBU director of athletics Steve Watson is a BGSU graduate, earning his bachelor's degree in 1990 after playing two seasons on the Falcon men's basketball team.
Tickets, neutral-site game times and campus round dates for the 2013 Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge will be released at a later date.
