Bowling Green will face host Louisville in Friday's first-round matchup
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), in conjunction with the NCAA Baseball Selection Committee, announced the Regional pairings for the 2013 NCAA Baseball Tournament on Monday. The Bowling Green State University Falcons, a four seed, will travel to Louisville, Ky. for a first round matchup with the University of Louisville. U-L, the top seed in the Louisville Regional, is also joined by 2-seed Oklahoma State and 3-seed Miami (Fla.). (PHOTO GALLERY)
For the first time since 1999, the Bowling Green State University baseball team will return to the NCAA Tournament. The Falcons qualified by winning the Mid-American Conference Tournament, defeating Ball State 7-0 in the championship game Sunday afternoon.
The first round matchups will be contested on Friday. The first game of the day will feature No. 2 seed Oklahoma State playing No. 3 seed Miami (Fla.). That contest is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. The first game will be followed up with a 6:00 p.m. game between the No. 4 seed Bowling Green State University Falcons and the No. 1 seed, and host school, Louisville Cardinals.
On Saturday, the two losers from Friday will meet in an elimination game in the day's first game, while the winners will meet in the nightcap. On Sunday, the winner from Saturday's first game will meet the loser from Saturday's second game. The winner from Sunday's first game will advance to the championship round, where they will need to beat the undefeated team in the Regional twice to advance to Super Regionals.
The NCAA Regional Tournament uses a double elimination format, with each team needing to lose twice to be eliminated. Each Regional includes four teams, with the 16 Regional winners advancing to the Super Regional round.
This will be the fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament for Bowling Green all time, as they have compiled a record of 2-6 in such games. In 1972, the Falcons made their first appearance in school history, earning a 2-2 record. In the first ever NCAA Tournament game for the Falcons, the Orange and Brown defeated Northern Illinois 2-0. They would follow that up with a 7-5 win over Central Michigan. Needing just one win to be crowned as District IV champions, the Falcons would lose two straight games to Iowa and fall just short of a College World Series appearance.
In 1998, the school's second appearance in the National Tournament, the Falcons would travel to the Coral Gables Regional. The Falcons would lose to Miami (Fla.) and Florida International in that trip. In 1999, the Falcons were placed in the Columbus Regional, where they also lost both games.
