September 23, 2013 | Football
Bowling Green, Ohio – For the second time in the first four weeks of the season, Bowling Green State University redshirt sophomore quarterback Matt Johnson was named the Mid-American Conference's East Division Offensive Player of the Week.
Johnson was 19-of-22 passing for 244 yards and two touchdowns as BGSU routed Murray State 48-7 Saturday to improve to 3-1 on the season. Johnson's 86.4 completion percentage was the fifth-best single-game mark in program history as the Falcons rolled up 660 yards of total offense, the most for the team since 2004.
Johnson threw a four-yard touchdown to Chris Gallon in the first quarter and followed that with a one-yard pass to Gallon late in the second quarter that capped a 16-play, 97-yard drive. Earlier in the quarter, Johnson rushed for a seven-yard score as he guided the team to four touchdown drives of 60 yards or more in the first half.
After Bowling Green's 41-22 win at Kent State in week two, Johnson was also named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week, posting his first career start. In fact, BGSU has been awarded the honor in three of the first four weeks of the season as freshman William Houston scored three touchdowns in a week one 34-7 victory over Tulsa to be recognized as well.
At 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in MAC play, Bowling Green hosts Akron (1-3, 0-0 MAC) Saturday at 2:30 pm in a game aired exclusively on ESPN3.
