Falcons to play Volunteers in Nashville
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Bowling Green State University football will open the 2015 season in Nashville, Tenn. when the Falcons take on the University of Tennessee on Labor Day Weekend. The game will be played at L.P. Field, home of the Tennessee Titans, on Sept. 5.
"We are looking forward to opening the 2015 football season with Tennessee in Nashville," Director of Athletics Chris Kingston said. "The Tennessee staff has always been terrific to work with and it was great to quickly put this together with such an exceptional Southeastern Conference team, especially after losing our opening game. This gives us an opportunity to better shape our schedule."
The recent announcement by the University of Alabama at Birmingham that they will be dropping their football program at the end of this season created a void in week one for the Volunteers – UAB's scheduled opponent. Bowling Green was left to fill a game on their schedule for next season after South Carolina State backed out of their contract with the Falcons, the game originally scheduled for Sept. 3 at Doyt L. Perry Stadium.
Both athletic departments moved quickly to reach an agreement to play the game, which will kickoff the college football season. The matchup in Nashville will be the first time that the two schools have met in football.
The game will mark the first time since a 2013 trip to Mississippi State that the Falcons will face an opponent from the Southeastern Conference. Bowling Green has an all-time record of 4-7 against current SEC foes and has not beaten an SEC opponent since defeating Missouri in 2002. With Missouri just joining the SEC in 2013, the Falcons have not truly beaten an SEC opponent (at the time of game) since defeating Kentucky in 1985.
As the game draws near on Sept. 5, BGSUFalcons.com will have additional information for Falcon fans on how to purchase your tickets to spend your 2015 Labor Day weekend cheering on the Orange & Brown in Nashville.
