Donovan earns all-conference honorable mention
Three members of the Bowling Green State University women's basketball program have recognized for their season-long accomplishments by the Mid-American Conference coaches. Seniors Jillian Halfhill and Alexis Rogers have been named to the All-MAC First Team, while redshirt sophomore Erica Donovan earned all-league honorable mention. The All-MAC Teams were announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon (March 10).
This marks the first time in five years that BGSU has had two players named to the first team (Tracy Pontius and Lauren Prochaska in 2009).
Rogers earns all-league first-team honors for the second time, and she has received conference accolades in each of her three playing seasons at BGSU. Rogers was named to the All-MAC First Team two years ago before earning second-team honors last March.
Halfhill and Donovan each earn all-league honors for the first time in their respective careers. Donovan is in her first year on the active roster for BGSU, having sat out last season as a transfer from North Carolina State University.
Halfhill, a native of Canfield, Ohio (Canfield H.S.), is averaging 13.3 points per game this season, ranking second on the team (behind Rogers). She is 14th in the MAC in scoring, and ranks among the league's top-10 players in assists per game, with 3.2. Halfhill leads the entire conference in three-point field-goal percentage, having hit 43.2% of her long-range tries, and she ranked seventh in the nation in that category in the most recent NCAA rankings. She is third in the league in three-pointers made per game, fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio and ninth in free-throw percentage.
In MAC games only, Halfhill finished the conference campaign with 14.7 ppg, good for 10th in the league. She led the entire MAC in three-point accuracy in league games, going 40-for-85 (47.1%) from long distance. Halfhill was third in the league in three-pointers made per game, fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio, seventh in FT pct. (83.3%), 11th in the league in assists (3.0 apg) and 15th in field-goal percentage (46.3).
Halfhill has scored in double digits in a team-leading 24 games this season, and has led BG in scoring 10 times and in assists on 15 occasions this season. She made the game-winning shot in Saturday's (March 8) 77-76 victory at Akron which helped BGSU clinch the outright regular-season crown.
Rogers, a native of West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West H.S.), leads the Falcons in scoring and ranks second in rebounding, with 14.9 points and 8.2 boards per contest. She is eighth in the league in scoring and ninth in rebounds. Rogers is second in the conference in field-goal percentage, having hit 156-of-292 shots (53.4%) this year to date. Rogers also ranks seventh in the MAC in free-throw pct. She has reached double digits in the scoring column 23 times this season and 61 times in her BG career. Rogers has a team-leading eight games of 20 or more points this winter, including a 23-point performance in Saturday's win over Akron. Rogers also had 15 rebounds and seven steals in that victory.
In MAC games only, Rogers finished fifth in the league in scoring and sixth in rebounding, with 16.4 ppg and 8.6 rpg. She was third in the conference in FT pct. and fourth in FG pct. in league games, and tied for fourth in steals against MAC opponents. Her eight double-doubles this season to date include five in MAC matches.
Rogers, in her third playing season at BGSU after transferring from Duke University, has scored a total of 1,196 points as a Falcon, an average of 12.6 per game. She ranks 20th in BGSU history in scoring.
Donovan, a native of Northside Texas (John Jay H.S.), is averaging 10.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game this season, ranking third on the team in both categories. She is shooting 44.0% from the field, and ranks 15th in the MAC in field-goal pct. and 24th in scoring. Donovan is second on the team in field-goal accuracy along with blocked shots.
In MAC games only, Donovan averaged 9.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. She has scored in double figures in 15 total games this year to date, and has had three double-doubles as well as three games of 20 points or more.
Halfhill and Rogers were joined on the All-MAC First Team by Central Michigan's Crystal Bradford and the Akron duo of Hanna Luburgh and Rachel Tecca.
The All-MAC Second Team consisted of Nathalie Fontaine of Ball State, Buffalo's Mackenzie Loesing, Eastern Michigan's Cha Sweeney, Toledo's Inma Zanoguera and Western Michigan's Miracle Woods.
The third team was comprised of UB's Kristen Sharkey, the CMU duo of Jas'Mine Bracey and Niki DiGuilio, Amanda Corral of Northern Illinois and Toledo's Andola Dortch.
In addition to Donovan, BSU's Brandy Woody, CMU's Jessica Green, WMU's Marquisha Harris and Ohio's Kiyanna Black all earned honorable mention.
Bradford was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year, while her teammate, Taylor Johnson, was voted the league's Sixth Player of the Year.
The MAC's All-Freshman Team included UA's Hannah Plybon, UB's Alexus Malone, EMU's Sweeney and Janay Morton, and Ohio's Quiera Lampkins.
The Falcons won the MAC's East Division, for the program's ninth divisional title in the last 10 years. BGSU captured the outright regular-season championship, with the best overall record in the league, for the eighth time in that 10-year span. BG, ranked 25th in the nation in today's (March 10) Associated Press poll, is the number-one seed for the MAC Tournament, and the Falcons will face an opponent to be determined in semifinal-round action on Friday (March 14) at noon. That game will be held at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland.
