from one of the University's Heritage
sports -- men's lacrosse.
Sparked by a unique opportunity to celebrate the past, the Bowling Green State University athletics department will hold the first Legacy Weekend, Oct. 17-18.
It was 50 years ago that both the Falcon Club and the athletics Hall of Fame were started at BGSU. Those two entities, along with BGSU's Heritage sports -- those which are no longer fielded by the University -- will be recognized during the weekend, which includes a home football game with Western Michigan.
"BGSU athletics plays a crucial role in the success of our institution. From the spirit of the Falcon Family to our competition in the national arena, the support for our student-athletes and coaches binds our alumni to Bowling Green in a way that few other opportunities can," said BGSU President Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey. "This year's Legacy Weekend, along with our annual Homecoming (Oct. 4), will honor our memorable past as we work to create the future for Falcon athletics."
Jane Myers, the assistant athletics director for development at BGSU, said the reunion held by the men's and women's lacrosse programs last fall helped set the stage for the Legacy Weekend. Both men's and women's lacrosse are Heritage sports at BGSU.
Â
"It was just so positive to see them reconnecting," Myers said about the lacrosse reunion. "And with the Falcon Club and Hall of Fame each having their 50th anniversary, we started brainstorming and came up with the idea to do it all at once."
Because there has not been much focus on the Heritage sports in recent years, those also have been added to the celebration. The idea for a major reunion weekend started out with some casual conversations in February and March, and now is moving forward, Myers added.

Among the activities planned are campus tours, a golfing opportunity, a social event at the Stroh Center on Friday, Oct. 17, a tour of the athletic archives at the Stroh Center, a pregame tailgate before the Western Michigan game on Oct. 18, and recognition of former athletes during the football game at Doyt Perry Field. Dr. Mazey will host a reception for the Hall of Fame members at the University House. Paul Miles, the only Falcon football player to have his number retired, will provide music at the reception.
Â
Tom Glick, who was the public address announcer for countless football and basketball games, will return as well as Jim Hof, who helped get the Falcon Club started, and April Harris, the widow of Jim Harris, who was the first director of the Falcon Club.
"It will be a once in a lifetime opportunity," Myers said. "We are looking forward to seeing BGSU alumni return to campus, reconnect and help us honor our past."
Invitations for the weekend of activities and events will be mailed in August.
