January 11, 2015 | Gymnastics
Bowling Green is ranked inside of GymInfo's Top 20 for the first time since 2002.
GymInfo National Poll (Jan. 12)
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team is ranked No. 14 in the country in the first edition of this year's GymInfo Top 20. GymInfo's rankings serve as the predominant poll for women's gymnastics, and ultimately determines which 36 schools will head to the NCAA Regionals.
The ranking is the second best in program history for the Falcons, who haven't been placed inside of the top 20 since Jan. 21, 2002. On Jan. 15, 2001, GymInfo ranked Bowling Green No. 10 overall, which stands as the program's highest ranking.
The Orange and Brown defeated Michigan State, 194.775 – 194.075, over the weekend (Jan. 10) at Anderson Arena to open the 2015 season. The win was the first for BGSU over a Big Ten Conference opponent since 2004. Bowling Green's team score of 194.775 was the program's best at an opening meet since the Falcons scored a 194.825 to open the 2001 season. Additionally, the victory was BGSU's second ever against Michigan State, as the Falcons last beat the Spartans in 1984.
The Falcons – who have posted the highest score of any Mid-American Conference school through the first week of the season – are the conference's only representative in the top 20. Oklahoma sits in first, with LSU, Florida, Utah and Michigan rounding out the top five.
The Falcons will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee to compete in the Ozone Collegiate Classic on Jan. 17 with Alaska Anchorage, Brigham Young and Wisconsin-Whitewater. Following the invitational, BGSU will start Mid-American Conference play with a dual meet at Eastern Michigan on Jan. 24.
