FALCONS ON THE ROAD (GET USED TO HEARING THAT PHRASE)
After playing just one true road match in the first 10 contests of the season, BGSU is in the midst of a stretch which sees the team play eight of the final nine regular-season contests at hostile venues. This week's two matches at SU and WMU conclude a four-game road swing, and after a home date with West Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 24, the Falcons will play four more road matches to close the regular season.
FAST FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons are 6-5-1 on the season, and BGSU has seen each of the last three matches go to overtime. Last week, the Brown and Orange lost a 2-1 decision at Ohio State (Oct. 7), when the Buckeyes scored with just three seconds left in the second overtime, before battling IUPUI to a 2-2, double-OT draw in Indianapolis (Oct. 10).
• BG won the first five matches of the year before suffering a 1-0 loss to Robert Morris (Sept. 13). The Falcons bounced back with a 3-2 win over IPFW (Sept. 18), but BG fell by a 6-0 count at Dayton (Sept. 23), then lost back-to-back home games by 1-0 results, to Michigan State and Northern Illinois, prior to the OSU match. In addition to IPFW, the Falcons have defeated SIUE, Western Illinois, Drexel, Cleveland State and Evansville this season, with multiple-goal wins against four of those six opponents.
• BGSU is 5-2-0 at home, 0-2-1 on the road and 1-1-0 in neutral-site matches this season. The Falcons have outscored the opponents by a 20-18 count, including 14-6 at Cochrane Stadium, to date.
• A pair of juniors from Naperville, Ill., lead the team in scoring. Pat Flynn has 22 points, including nine goals, on the season, and he is ranked among the national scoring leaders. Joe Sullivan has 16 points on six goals and four assists. Sullivan has scored three game-winning goals and Flynn two this year to date.
• Flynn has three multiple-goal games this fall, with a hat trick vs. Western Illinois (Aug. 30) and two-goal, five-point nights in back-to-back matches vs. Cleveland State (Sept. 6) and Evansville (Sept. 11). Sullivan had his first multi-goal game of the season and the second of his career in the Falcons' win over IPFW, and he was involved in the scoring of both goals at IUPUI, with a goal and an assist.
• Senior Ryan James has eight points, while junior Jacob Roth has scored seven points and redshirt freshman Bismark Agyeman five. James has two goals and four assists, and is tied with Flynn and Sullivan for second on the team in the latter category. Agyeman leads the Falcons on that list, as all five of his points have come via assists.
• In goal, redshirt junior Ryan Heuton has started 11 of BGSU's 12 matches this season. He has a pair of shutouts, 28 saves and a goals-against average of 1.42. Redshirt junior Nick Landsberger saw his first action of the season at IUPUI, and had four saves.
• A total of six players have started all 12 games this year. That list includes James, Roth, Sullivan, redshirt junior Max Auden, sophomore Alexis Souahy and freshman Tate Robertson.
• Souahy is the only player to have been on the pitch for all 1126-plus minutes this fall. Roth has played 1123 minutes, while James has played 1096 minutes and Auden 1078.
• The Falcons have taken 75 corner kicks this year, compared to just 48 for the opposition. The NIU game marked the first time all year that the opponent had more corners than BG.
NOTES FROM LAST WEEK
• Redshirt junior Max Auden scored his first goal of the season in Wednesday's (Oct. 7) match at Ohio State. For the Falcons, that goal broke a scoreless streak of 324:16, as BG had not found the back of the net since late in the win over IPFW (Sept. 18).
• Auden's goal was the Falcons' first goal vs. OSU in over a decade. The Falcons had been shutout victims against the Buckeyes in seven consecutive matches. BG's last goal(s) against the Buckeyes came in the Falcons' last win over OSU, 3-2 in overtime at Cochrane Stadium on Sept. 23, 2005. Ryan Perea, Omari Aldridge and Kyle Williams scored in that match, with the Williams goal coming in OT as BG downed the nationally-ranked Bucks.
• Auden became the first Falcon to score against the Buckeyes in Columbus since 2004. That year, Jordan Koblens scored twice, while Matt Yanick and Greg Hennelly also found the back of the net in a wild 7-4 OSU win.
• Auden's goal was assisted by sophomore Alexis Souahy and junior Jacob Roth. It was BGSU's first goal with neither Pat Flynn nor Joe Sullivan involved in the scoring in over a month, since a Roth penalty kick vs. Drexel on Sept. 3. And, it was BG's first such goal from the run of play since the Falcons' very first goal of the season, when senior Ryan James scored off of a pass from redshirt freshman Bismark Agyeman vs. SIUE on Aug. 28.
• Sophomore Keaton Reynolds picked up the lone assist on Sullivan's goal on Saturday at IUPUI. For Reynolds, the team's lone Indiana native, it marked the first point of his BGSU career.
• That IUPUI match marked the first time BG did not win a game in which Sullivan scored. The Falcons are now 4-0-1 this year, and 10-0-1 in Sullivan's career, when the junior finds the back of the net.
• On a related note, BGSU is 5-0-0 this fall and 13-0-0 all time when Flynn scores a goal. BGSU is 2-0-0 in 2015 and 5-0-1 through the years when James scores.
SCOUTING SYRACUSE
Syracuse enters Tuesday's action with an overall record of 8-3-1, and the Orange is 2-2-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play to date. SU, ranked 22nd in the nation in last week's NSCAA poll, is 13th in this week's Top Drawer Soccer poll. The Orange saw a five-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday night (Oct. 10), falling to the second-ranked team in the country, North Carolina, by a 2-1 score on the road. SU's other losses have come to nationally-ranked teams as well, as the Orange fell to Hofstra (ranked 14th in the country in last week's NSCAA poll) and Wake Forest (sixth in the nation in last week's poll). Ben Polk and Julian Buescher are tied for the team scoring lead with 14 points apiece, while Oyvind Alseth has 10 points. Polk leads the Orange with five goals, while Buescher has a team-high six assists. In goal, Austin Aviza has made nine starts, and has three shutouts, 22 saves and a goals-against average of 0.97. Hendrik Hilpert has started each of the last three contests, and has nine saves and a 1.33 GAA for head coach Ian McIntyre. SU is 5-0-1 at home and 3-3-0 on the road this season to date. Last year, the Orange finished 16-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in ACC play. SU was ranked #1 in the nation for the first time in program history during the 2014 campaign, and the Orange advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championships.
A LOOK AT WMU
Western Michigan enters the week with an overall record of 6-2-2, and the Broncos are 0-1-0 in Mid-American Conference play. Last week, the Broncos fell on the road to West Virginia by a 1-0 final. Western plays at Michigan State on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 13) before hosting BG on Saturday. The Broncos are 4-1-1 at home and 2-1-1 on the road this season. WMU did not allow a single goal over the season's first five matches, and the Broncos have surrendered just four total goals all year. Individually, Nick Wysong leads the team in scoring, with his 12 points including a team-high four goals. No fewer than six of his teammates have scored between four and six points. In goal, Drew Shepherd has made eight starts, and has five shutouts, 18 saves and a miniscule GAA of 0.15. He leads the nation in both GAA and saves percentage. Last fall, WMU finished with an overall mark of 8-7-4 and a 2-2-1 MAC ledger. Head coach Chad Wiseman welcomed back 17 letterwinners, including all 11 starters, from that 2014 team.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Syracuse, 1-0-0, in the all-time series between the teams. The only previous meeting was a 2-0 victory for the Brown and Orange on Sept. 2, 1990. The win, in BGSU's season opener, came at the Maine Kick Off Tournament, won by the Falcons.
BGSU leads Western Michigan, 28-15-3, in that series, and the Falcons have won two of the last three meetings. Last year, Max Auden scored late in regulation, then again in overtime as the Falcons rallied for a 2-1 win over the Broncos at Cochrane Stadium (Nov. 1, 2014). Two seasons ago, in the most recent meeting in Kalamazoo, the Broncos picked up a 1-0 win on a free kick late in the first half. BGSU went 24-3-2 vs. Western in the first 29 meetings, but the Broncos are 12-4-1 vs. the Falcons since that time. WMU won five-straight meetings with BG before the Falcons' 2012 win, BGSU has records of 16-4-2 at home, 11-10-1 on the road and 1-1-0 in neutral-site meetings with the Broncos through the years.
'FLYNN & SULLY' SOUNDS LIKE THE NAME OF A BUDDY COP SHOW THAT WE'D DEFINITELY WATCH
• Pat Flynn has received many accolades for his scoring prowess during his time at BGSU, and deservedly so. However, Flynn is not the only junior who is racking up the goals for the Falcons. In fact, he is not even the only junior from Naperville, Ill., who has found the back of the net with regularity. Like Flynn, Joe Sullivan is listed among not only the MAC, but the national leaders.
• Flynn leads the team with 22 points this season, on nine goals and four assists. Sullivan is second on the Falcons in both goals and points, with 16 points on six goals and four helpers this fall. The two have combined for 15 of BG's 20 goals this year, including five of the Falcons' six game-winning goals.
• Both Flynn and Sullivan are ranked among the top-10 in the MAC in all nine offensive categories kept by the league. They are both ranked among the top-four players in five of those nine categories.
• On the national lists, Sullivan' name pops up on all nine offensive statistical categories kept by the NCAA, while Flynn's name can be found on eight of those nine lists. Flynn is fifth in the nation in total goals, and he is sixth in the country in total points, ninth in points per game and 14th in goals per game.
• Sullivan is 17th in the nation in game-winning goals, 26th in total points and 31st in total goals scored. He is listed among the country's top-60 players in a total of seven categories, while Flynn is ranked 58th or better on seven NCAA offensive statistical lists.
• Either Sullivan or Flynn (or both) have been involved in the scoring of 17 of BG's 20 goals this season, including 11 of the last 12.
• Flynn has assisted on three of Sullivan's goals this season, and Sullivan has picked up an assist on three of Flynn's goals in 2015.
• Flynn has eight career game-winning goals (in one-and-a-half years) at BG, while Sullivan has seven GWG in his Falcon tenure.
• Flynn's 22 points this season have come after he exploded for 14 goals and 32 points last fall, in his first year as a Falcon. Sullivan has 16 points in 2015, tying his total from a season ago. He has a career-best six goals this season to date, after scoring five times in '14.
MULTIPLE-GOAL MATCHES
• The Falcons have scored three or more goals five times this year, after reaching the three-goal mark a total of four times during all of last season. In fact, no BG team has reached the three-goal mark more than four times since 1999 (six times).
• The Falcons were 9-1-0 when scoring two or more goals last season, with the only loss coming in overtime (3-2 at Duquesne). After scoring twice at IUPUI, BGSU is 5-0-1 this season and 35-4-5 in the Eric Nichols Era when scoring at least two goals in a game.
#FALCONFAST
While the term #FalconFast is most commonly associated with coach Dino Babers and the BGSU football team, it could also be used to describe another group of futbol Falcons. Three times this season to date, the men's soccer team has taken the lead with under six minutes gone. Junior Pat Flynn scored just 2:36 into the win over Western Illinois (Aug. 30). Junior Joe Sullivan, who assisted on that goal, scored off of a Flynn feed with only 3:56 gone against Cleveland State (Sept. 6). On Saturday at IUPUI, junior Jacob Roth headed home a Sullivan corner kick at the 5:57 mark..
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following this week's two matches, the Falcons return to Cochrane Stadium for one final home game in the 2015 regular season. BGSU faces West Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 24, with first touch set for 1:00 p.m. Then, the Brown and Orange will return to the road for the final four matches of the regular season, taking on Wright State, Buffalo, Appalachian State and  Akron.
