THE I-75 CUP
The Falcons and Wright State will be playing for possession of the I-75 Cup in Tuesday night's match. The cup, which goes to the winner of the BGSU-WSU match each year, was instituted by Falcon coach Eric Nichols and his counterpart, Bryan Davis. BG is 4-1-0 vs. the Raiders since the two coaches came up with the idea for the cup prior to the 2010 season.
BGSU & THE MAC TOURNAMENT RACE
With just two weeks left in the regular season, the Falcons are embroiled in the race for a berth in the MAC Tournament. The top-four teams in the final standings will qualify for the tourney, which will be hosted by the regular-season champion on Nov. 13-15. Currently, Akron leads the league, and the other five teams in the conference are separated by just one point. Each team has two conference matches remaining. Over the next few weeks, check BGSUFalcons.com for updates and tournament scenarios as the tourney picture becomes a little more clear. The current league standings as well as each team's remaining conference schedule, can be found near the top of this page, and a complete list of results of all MAC matches is on page 7 of the PDF version of these notes.
FALCONS ON THE ROAD (GET USED TO HEARING THAT PHRASE)
After playing just one true road match in the first 10 contests of the season, BGSU is in the midst of a stretch which sees the team play eight of the final nine regular-season contests at hostile venues. This week's two matches at WSU and UB begin the Falcons' second four-game road swing during that stretch. Saturday's (Oct. 24) win over West Virginia was the Falcons' lone home game after Sept. 18.
FAST FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons are 7-7-1 on the season, and BGSU is 1-2-0 in MAC play. BG is currently tied for fifth place in the six-team conference, but the Falcons are just one point shy of second place.
• BGSU picked up a 2-0 win over West Virginia at Cochrane Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 24), in the Falcons' lone match last week. Redshirt junior Danny Shea scored his first collegiate goal with just under 20 minutes left in the second half, on a long ball struck from his own side of the midfield line.
• For the Falcons, the win over WVU snapped a seven-match winless streak, the team's longest in two years. That came after a 6-1-0 start to the year.
• BG won the first five matches of the season before suffering a 1-0 loss to Robert Morris (Sept. 13). The Falcons bounced back with a 3-2 win over IPFW (Sept. 18), but BG fell by a 6-0 count at Dayton, then lost back-to-back home games by 1-0 results, to Michigan State and Northern Illinois. In addition to IPFW, the Falcons have defeated SIUE, Western Illinois, Drexel, Cleveland State, Evansville and WVU this season. BGSU scored at least three goals in five of the season's seven wins to date.
• The middle three games in that seven-match winless streak all required overtime. Prior to the three OT matches, the Falcons lost to MSU on a goal with under two minutes left in regulation. BG fell to NIU by an identical 1-0 score, with that match going to an extra session. Then, host Ohio State scored with just three seconds left in the second OT. before BG battled IUPUI to a 2-2, double-OT draw in Indianapolis.
• BGSU went 6-2-0 at home, and the Falcons are 0-4-1 on the road and 1-1-0 in neutral-site matches this season. The Falcons have scored 23 goals and allowed 23 this fall, but BG scored 16 goals and allowed only six at Cochrane Stadium.
• A pair of juniors from Naperville, Ill., lead the team in scoring. Pat Flynn has 22 points, including nine goals, on the season, and he is ranked among the national scoring leaders. Joe Sullivan has 16 points on six goals and four assists. Sullivan has scored three game-winning goals and Flynn two.
• Flynn has three multiple-goal games this fall, with a hat trick vs. Western Illinois (Aug. 30) and two-goal, five-point nights in back-to-back matches vs. Cleveland State (Sept. 6) and Evansville (Sept. 11). Sullivan had his first multi-goal game of the season and the second of his career in the Falcons' win over IPFW, and he was involved in the scoring of both goals at IUPUI, with a goal and an assist.
• Junior Jacob Roth has scored 11 points, while senior Ryan James has eight. Roth converted a penalty kick in the WVU match, giving him four goals this fall. He is a perfect 3-for-3 on PKs this season, and also has three assists. James has a pair of goals, and is tied with Flynn and Sullivan for second on the team with four assists. Redshirt freshman Bismark Agyeman has five points this season, all coming via assists. He leads the Falcons in that category.
• In goal, redshirt junior Ryan Heuton has started 13 of BGSU's 15 matches this season. He has three shutouts, 35 saves and a goals-against average of 1.35. Redshirt junior Nick Landsberger has made two starts, with complete-match efforts vs. IUPUI and Syracuse. He has 10 saves and a GAA of 2.25 this fall.
• A total of five players have started all 15 games this year. That list includes James, Roth, Sullivan, redshirt junior Max Auden and sophomore Alexis Souahy.
• Souahy is the only player to have been on the pitch for all 1396-plus minutes this fall. Roth has played a total of 1393 minutes, while James has played 1359 minutes, Auden 1333 and Sullivan 1303.
• BGSU has taken 82 corner kicks this year, compared to 70 for the opposition. The Falcons had more corners than the opponent in each of the first nine matches of the season, but BG has taken fewer corners than the foes in five of the last six games.
FASCINATING FALCON FACTS
• With the win over West Virginia on Saturday (Oct. 24), BGSU concluded the home portion of the schedule with a 6-2-0 record. The Falcons also won six matches at Cochrane Stadium last season, going 6-2-1. No BG team has won more than six home matches since the 1996 Falcons went 9-0-1.
• BGSU has scored a total of 23 goals this fall. No fewer than 17 of those 23 goals have been scored by natives of Naperville, Ill.  Junior Pat Flynn leads the team with nine goals, while classmate Joe Sullivan is second with six. Both Max Auden and Danny Shea have scored one goal apiece.
• Freshman Vincent Giannini made his first collegiate start on Saturday vs. WVU. Giannini, a native of Sydney, Australia, had played a total of 15 minutes over the Falcons' first 14 matches of the year, but he was on the field for 57 minutes vs. the Mountaineers.
• A total of 17 different players have started at least one match for the Falcons this season.
• BGSU is now 6-0-1 this season when scoring two or more goals in a match. The Falcons were 9-1-0 in such matches last fall, with the only loss coming in overtime (3-2 at Duquesne). BGSU is now 36-4-5 in the Eric Nichols Era when scoring at least two goals in a game.
SCOUTING WSU
Wright State enters Tuesday's match with an overall record of 9-4-1, and the Raiders are 4-3-1 in Horizon League play this season. WSU suffered a 3-2, double-overtime loss to visiting Detroit Saturday night (Oct. 24). That setback snapped a three-game winning streak, including a home victory over Valparaiso and a pair of shutout wins on the road over Milwaukee and Belmont. The Raiders are 3-2-1 at home, 4-2-0 on the road and 2-0-0 in neutral-site matches this fall. Individually, Peguy Ngatcha and Jackson Dietrich are tied for the team scoring lead. Both players have 12 points, while Eric Lynch has 11. Ngatcha and Lynch have five goals apiece, while Dietrich has a team-high six assists. In goal, Tyler Blackmer has played every second of every match, and has 48 saves, seven shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.75. Last year, the Raiders of head coach Bryan Davis finished 12-7-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the Horizon League.
A LOOK AT UB
Buffalo has an overall record of 6-5-4 on the season, and the Bulls will take a 1-1-1 MAC record into Friday's match with the Falcons. UB is one of three MAC teams tied for second place in the conference, just one point ahead of the Falcons and West Virginia. The Bulls suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to nationally-ranked Akron in the MAC opener, then downed WVU by a 2-0 score before heading to Northern Illinois and earning a 1-1 draw with the Huskies. UB is 5-2-1 at home, 1-2-3 on the road and 0-1-0 at neutral sites this year. Russell Cicerone leads the Bulls in every offensive category, with 28 points on 10 goals and eight assists. He has taken 44 shots, 20 more than any of his teammates. Scott Doney has scored 13 points and Braden Scales 11. Joseph Kuta and Cameron Hogg have split time in goal. Kuta has made seven starts and has 28 saves, three shutouts and a GAA of 0.81. Hogg has started eight matches and has 29 stops, one shutout and a 1.18 GAA. A year ago, the Bulls finished with an overall mark of 3-11-4 and a 1-4-1 MAC ledger. Stu Riddle welcomed back 17 letterwinners, including nine starters, from that club.
THE SERIES
BGSU leads Wright State, 8-6-2, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU has won each of the last three meetings in overtime. Last fall, Jacob Roth converted a pair of penalty kicks, with the second coming in the 100th minute, to lift the Falcons to a 2-1 win at a rainy Cochrane Stadium (Nov. 4, 2014). Two years ago, in the teams' last meeting in Dayton, an own goal gave the Brown and Orange a 1-0 OT win (Oct. 22, 2013). And, the year before that, Â Ryan James scored his second goal of the match in the second OT for a 3-2 win at Cochrane (Oct. 30, 2012). WSU's last series win came in 2011, a 2-1 result at Alumni Field (Nov. 1, 2011). BG is 5-2-2 in home games and 3-4-0 in road matches vs. WSU through the years.
The Falcons lead Buffalo, 11-7-1, in that series, and BGSU is unbeaten in the last three meetings. A year ago, the Falcons and Bulls battled to a 1-1, double-overtime draw at Cochrane (Oct. 18, 2014). The Falcons' last trip to Buffalo saw Joe Sullivan score in the 81st minute as BG picked up a 1-0 win (Oct. 4, 2013). Prior to that, the teams had played three-straight multi-goal decisions, with BG winning 2-0 in 2010 and 3-0 in 2012, both at Cochrane, but UB scoring five times in the second half for a 5-0 win in Western New York in '11. The Falcons are 4-4-1 in home games, 6-3-0 in road contests and 1-0-0 in neutral-site meetings with the Bulls, and BG has scored 29 goals to UB's 26 in the first 19 series matchups.
CLIMBING CAREER CHARTS
A few of the 2015 Falcons are adding to their career point totals in relatively rapid fashion. Junior Pat Flynn, in only his second year at BG, has totals of 23 goals and 54 points in just 36 career matches. He is only one goal and five points from moving into the top 10 on those respective BGSU career charts.
Junior Joe Sullivan is the lone active Falcon with double-digit totals in both goals and assists. Sullivan has 38 career points on 13 goals and 12 assists.
Junior Jacob Roth has converted a penalty kick in each of the last two games, and now has 29 career points on nine goals and 11 assists. Senior Ryan James is right behind Roth, with 28 points on seven goals and 14 assists. And, junior Max Auden has 20 points, having scored seven goals and handed out six assists at BGSU.
THE 89TH MINUTE (A FEW MORE FASCINATING FALCON FACTS)
• Juniors Pat Flynn and Joe Sullivan have been involved in the scoring of 17 of BGSU's 23 goals this year, but neither have figured in the scoring on the Falcons' last three goals. Two of those goals were penalty kicks by junior Jacob Roth, while Saturday's first goal vs. West Virginia came on a long-range strike by junior Danny Shea.
• While they were not credited with points on the Falcons' second goal vs. WVU, both Flynn and Sullivan played a major part in that goal. Sullivan played a ball ahead to Flynn, who was pulled down in the box after poking the ball past the WVU 'keeper, resulting in the Roth PK.
• BGSU is 5-0-0 this fall and 13-0-0 all time when Flynn scores a goal. The Falcons are 4-0-1 this year and 10-0-1 all-time when Sullivan finds the back of the net, and BG has gone 2-0-0 in 2015 and 5-0-1 through the years when senior Ryan James scores.
• The Falcons have scored three or more goals five times this year, after reaching the three-goal mark a total of four times during all of last season. No BG team has reached the three-goal mark more than four times since 1999 (six times).
• The win over WVU gives the Falcons a  record of 3-3-1 in Senior Day/Night matches in the Nichols Era, and BG has a three-match unbeaten streak in such games.
