FALCONS ON THE ROAD (GET USED TO HEARING THAT PHRASE)
After playing just one true road match in the first 10 contests of the season, BGSU now will play eight of the final nine regular-season contests at hostile venues. Wednesday's OSU match begins a four-game road swing, and after a home date with West Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 24, the Brown and Orange will play four more road matches to close the regular season.
FAST FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons are 6-4-0 on the season, and BGSU is looking to snap a three-match losing streak. BG won the first five matches of the year before suffering a 1-0 loss to Robert Morris (Sept. 13). The Falcons bounced back with a 3-2 win over IPFW (Sept. 18), but BG fell by a 6-0 count at Dayton (Sept. 23), then lost back-to-back home games by 1-0 results, to Michigan State and Northern Illinois. The latter contest, the team's Mid-American Conference opener, came in overtime. In addition to IPFW, the Falcons have defeated SIUE, Western Illinois, Drexel, Cleveland State and Evansville this season, with multiple-goal wins against four of those six opponents.
• BGSU is 5-2-0 at home, 0-1-0 on the road and 1-1-0 in neutral-site matches this season. The Falcons have outscored the opponents by a 17-14 count, including 14-6 at Cochrane Stadium, to date.
• A pair of juniors from Naperville, Ill., lead the team in scoring. Pat Flynn has 22 points, including nine goals, on the season, ranking among the national scoring leaders. Joe Sullivan has 13 points on five goals and three assists. Sullivan has scored three game-winning goals and Flynn two this year to date.
• Flynn has three multiple-goal games this fall, with a hat trick vs. Western Illinois (Aug. 30) and two-goal, five-point nights in back-to-back matches vs. Cleveland State (Sept. 6) and Evansville (Sept. 11). Sullivan had his first multi-goal game of the season and the second of his career in the Falcons' win over IPFW.
• Senior Ryan James has eight points, while redshirt freshman Bismark Agyeman has scored five points and junior Jacob Roth four. James has two goals and four assists, and is tied with Flynn for second on the team in that category. All five of Agyeman's points have come via assists. He leads BG and is ranked 16th in the nation on that list.
• In goal, redshirt junior Ryan Heuton has played all 906-plus minutes this season. He has a pair of shutouts, 28 saves and a goals-against average of 1.39. Heuton has an overall career GAA of just 0.98 in his BGSU tenure, which spans more than 1661 minutes.
• Heuton is one of seven players to have started all 10 games this year. That list also includes James, Roth, Sullivan, redshirt junior Max Auden, sophomore Alexis Souahy and freshman Tate Robertson.
• Souahy is the only field player to have been on the pitch for all 906-plus minutes this fall. Roth has played 903 minutes, while James has played 876 minutes and Auden 858.
• The Falcons have taken 64 corner kicks this season, compared to just 36 for the opposition. The NIU game marked the first time all year that the opponent had more corners than BG.
SCOUTING OHIO STATE
Ohio State is 4-4-2 on the season, and the Buckeyes are unbeaten in the last five matches. OSU is 1-1-1 in Big Ten Conference play after picking up a 2-1 win at Michigan State on Sunday (Oct. 4). The Buckeyes, after starting the season with a 1-4-0 record, tied a pair of nationally-ranked teams in Akron and Penn State, then defeated Dayton, Louisville and MSU. OSU is 3-1-1 at home and 1-3-1 on the road this year to date, and the team has both scored and allowed 12 goals. Danny Jensen and Kyle Culbertson have seven points apiece to tie for the team lead. Jensen has scored an OSU-best three goals, while Culbertson leads the Buckeyes with three assists. In goal, Chris Froschauer has played all but three minutes this season, and has three shutouts, 30 saves and a goals-against average of 1.15. Last year, head coach John Bluem's team went 9-8-5 overall and 5-3-0 in conference pay, finishing second in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships. Bleum welcomed back 13 letterwinners, including nine starters, from that club.
A LOOK AT IUPUI
IUPUI enters the week with a very deceiving record of 0-5-4, and the Jaguars are 0-0-2 in Summit League play. The Jags, who play at Indiana Wednesday night before hosting the Falcons this weekend, have seen six of their nine matches go to overtime. All five of their losses have come by a single goal. The team's last two matches have been draws against nationally-ranked opponents, as IUPUI has played both Omaha and Denver to 1-1 deadlocks. The Jags are 0-3-1 at home, 0-2-2 on the road and 0-0-1 in neutral-site matches to date. Individually, Clint Hoffar has three of the team's eight goals, and leads IUPUI with six points. In goal, Eduardo Cortes has played every second of every match, and has 60 saves and a 1.29 GAA. Cortes is second in the nation in saves per game and third in the country in total saves. Last year IUPUI finished with an overall record of 5-8-3 and a Summit League mark of 2-3-1. Head coach Isang Jacob returned 12 letterwinners, including eight starters, from a season ago.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Ohio State, 24-15-3, in the all-time series between the teams. Last year, OSU got a pair of penalty kick-related goals in the first half, en route to a 3-0 victory in Columbus (Oct. 22, 2014) – BGSU's only multiple-goal loss during all of last season. Two seasons ago, despite holding advantages of 35-12 in total shot attempts and 9-2 in shots on goal, the Falcons settled for a scoreless draw vs. the Buckeyes at Cochrane Stadium (Sept. 13, 2013). Prior to that meeting, OSU had won five consecutive series matchups. BGSU's last win over OSU was a 3-2 overtime triumph in 2005, and the Falcons' last road victory over the Buckeyes came in 1995. BGSU is 14-4-1 in home games, 9-11-2 in road contests and 1-0-0 in neutral-site meetings with Ohio State through the years.
BGSU leads IUPUI, 2-1-1, in that series, and BGSU has a three-match unbeaten streak vs. the Jaguars. Last year, goals by Pat Flynn and Danny Baraldi lifted the Falcons to a 2-0 home win over the Jags, in the season opener for both teams (Aug. 29, 2014). Nick Landsberger made five saves to earn a shutout in his first collegiate match. The teams also played at Cochrane in 2011, when Colin Armstrong scored in the final seconds of the first half to help the Falcons to a 1-0 win. The teams had battled to a scoreless draw the previous season (Nov. 3, 2010), in the only meeting in Indianapolis prior to Saturday. The first-ever meeting between the teams saw the Jags pick up a 3-2 win in the 2004 season, in first-day action at BGSU's own Kelme Classic.
FACING HIS ALMA MATER
Eric Nichols faces his alma mater on Friday night, as the BGSU head coach is a 2000 graduate of OSU. Nichols played soccer for the Buckeyes under coach Gary Avedikian, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.
FACING HIS ALMA MATER II
Former BGSU men's soccer student-athlete Garrett Bireline is in his second season as an assistant coach at IUPUI. Bireline, a native of Marion, Ind., was named BGSU's Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year in April of 2010, and earned his degree in 2011.
'FLYNN & SULLY' SOUNDS LIKE THE NAME OF A BUDDY COP SHOW THAT WE'D DEFINITELY WATCH
• Pat Flynn has received many accolades for his scoring prowess during his time at BGSU, and deservedly so. However, Flynn is not the only junior who is racking up the goals for the Falcons. In fact, he is not even the only junior from Naperville, Ill., who has found the back of the net with regularity. Like Flynn, Joe Sullivan is listed among not only the MAC, but the national leaders.
• Flynn leads the team with 22 points this season, on nine goals and four assists. Sullivan is second on the Falcons in both goals and points, with 13 points on five goals and three helpers this fall. The two have combined for 14 of BG's 17 goals this year, including five of the Falcons' six game-winning goals.
• Flynn is ranked among the top-10 in the MAC in all nine offensive categories kept by the league, while Sullivan's' name can be found on seven of those nine lists. They are both ranked among the top-four players in five of those nine categories.
• On the national lists, Flynn's name pops up on all nine offensive statistical categories kept by the NCAA, while Sullivan's name can be found on eight of those nine lists. Flynn is fourth in the nation in total points and total goals, and he is fifth in both goals per game and points per game. Flynn leads the MAC in all four of those categories.
• Sullivan is 12th in the nation in game-winning goals, and he is listed among the country's top-60 players in six other categories. Flynn is ranked 59th or better on all nine NCAA offensive statistical lists.
• Either Sullivan or Flynn (or both) have been involved in the scoring of 15 of BG's 17 goals this season, including each of the last nine.
• Flynn has assisted on three of Sullivan's goals this season, and Sullivan has picked up an assist on three of Flynn's goals in 2015.
• Flynn has eight career game-winning goals (in one year and eight matches) at BG, while Sullivan has seven GWG in his Falcon tenure.
FUN FACTS ABOUT FLYNN
• Junior Pat Flynn scored 14 goals and 32 points last season, and tied for second nationally among 2015 returnees in total goals, goals per game (0.67) and total points. This season, Flynn has scored 22 points, including nine goals, through 10 games.
• Heading into the OSU match, Flynn has totals of 23 goals and 54 points in just 31 games at BGSU, for averages of 0.74 goals and 1.74 points per match as a Falcon.
• Flynn is the active career leader – among all NCAA Division-I players – in goals per game. He would be the active career leader in points per game as well, but that list only includes players with 60 or more career points.
• After just a season and a half at BGSU, Flynn is already threatening to break into the top 10 on several school career lists. He is just one goal and five points away from tying for 10th in BGSU history on those respective charts.
• Flynn had three multiple-goal games in the Falcons' first five contests of the season, with a hat trick against Western Illinois (Aug. 30) and two-goal, five-point outings in back-to-back contests, against Cleveland State (Sept. 6) and Evansville (Sept. 11).
• For Flynn, the hat trick vs. WIU was the second of his collegiate career. He now has six multi-goal games, with three last year and three more this fall.
• Flynn's 2014 goal and point totals were the highest by a Falcon since the 1996 season.
THE 89TH MINUTE (A FEW FINAL FALCON FACTS)
• Freshman defender Moe Mustafa made his collegiate debut last week. Mustafa did not see action in any of the Falcons' first eight games of the season, but came off the bench to play 32 minutes against MSU. Then, he made his first collegiate start in the NIU match, plaing all 96-plus minutes.
• The Falcons have lost three consecutive games for the first time in nearly four years, since BG dropped four-straight contests to end the 2011 season. Last year, the Brown and Orange had a four-match winless streak (L-T-L-L) in mid-October – a stretch that included the 3-0 setback at Ohio State – but rebounded to win five-straight games. The latter streak took the Falcons all the way to the championship match of the MAC Tournament.
• Saturday's NIU match marked BGSU's first overtime contest of the season, after the Falcons had played seven OT games last year and a school-record nine such games the year before. Saturday's loss snapped a six-match unbeaten streak for BG in overtime matches. The Falcons had gone 5-0-1 in OT games since a 3-2 loss on the road vs. Duquesne last Sept. 7.
• The Falcons have scored three or more goals five times this year, after reaching the three-goal mark a total of four times during all of last season. In fact, no BG team has reached the three-goal mark more than four times since 1999 (six times).
• The Falcons were 9-1-0 when scoring two or more goals last season, with the only loss coming in overtime (3-2 at Duquesne). BGSU is now 35-4-4 in the Eric Nichols Era (including a perfect 5-0-0 this season) when scoring at least two goals in a game.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following this week's two matches, the Falcons will play two more road games next week, taking on nationally-ranked Syracuse on Tuesday, Oct. 13, before returning to MAC play with a match at Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 17.

Then, the Brown and Orange will travel to Indianapolis, Ind., for a Saturday (Oct. 10) matchup with IUPUI. The Falcons and Jaguars will meet in a 12:00 p.m. start at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
