BGSU & THE MAC TOURNAMENT RACE
With just one match left in the regular season for each of the MAC's six teams, the Falcons' scenario is relatively simple, although BGSU's task is anything but. BG is currently tied for fifth place in the MAC standings, and only the top-four teams will qualify for the conference tournament, which will be hosted by the regular-season champion on Nov. 13-15. For BGSU to advance to the league tourney, the following must happen...
• BGSU must win at Akron on Saturday night, AND
• The Falcons need West Virginia to beat or tie Northern Illinois on Friday evening.
In such a scenario, BGSU would then have six points, and the Falcons would be tied for fourth place with WVU. But, BG wins a tiebreaker with the Mountaineers by virtue of a win in the teams' head-to-head meeting, so the Falcons would earn the fourth seed for the league tourney. The current league standings and each team's remaining MAC match are listed above, and a complete list of results of all MAC matches is on page 7 of the PDF version of these notes.
IT'S A THIN LINE
In an uber-competitive conference like the MAC, the line between winning and losing can be razor-thin. Late last year, BGSU put together a five-match win streak which took the team all the way to the MAC Tournament's championship match. All five of those wins came by a single goal, with four going to overtime. Three of those five wins, including two of the OT contests, came against conference foes. This season, BGSU currently has a 1-3-0 record in MAC play. All three losses have come by a single goal, with one loss coming in OT and another coming on a goal with just two minutes left in regulation. The 2014 Falcons went 10-5-0 in one-goal games, and posted a school-record total of five OT wins. This year, BGSU is 3-6-0 in one-goal matches to date.
FALCONS ON THE ROAD (GET USED TO HEARING THAT PHRASE)
After playing just one true road match in the first 10 contests of the season, BGSU is in the midst of a stretch which sees the team play eight of the final nine regular-season games at hostile venues. This week's two matches at Appalachian State and Akron conclude the  Falcons' second four-game road swing during that stretch. BGSU's match against West Virginia (a 2-0 win on Oct. 24) was the Falcons' lone home game after Sept. 18.
FAST FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons are 8-8-1 on the season, and BGSU is 1-3-0 in MAC play. BG is currently tied for fifth place in the six-team conference, one point behind fourth-place Northern Illinois.
• Last week, the Brown and Orange split a pair of matches on the road. BGSU rallied for a 3-2 win over Wright State on Tuesday night (Oct. 27), scoring twice with under 16 minutes remaining. On Friday (Oct. 30), however, BG fell to Buffalo in MAC play in Western New York. After taking the lead with under 15 minutes on the clock, the Falcons saw the Bulls rally with two goals in the final four minutes.
• The loss to UB snapped a two-match win streak for the Falcons, who had downed West Virginia, 2-0, in the final match at Cochrane Stadium this season (Oct. 24). That victory had snapped a seven-match winless streak (the team's longest in two years) which came after a 6-1-0 start to the year.
• BG won the first five matches of the fall before suffering a 1-0 loss to Robert Morris (Sept. 13). The Falcons bounced back with a 3-2 win over IPFW (Sept. 18), but BG fell by a 6-0 count at Dayton, then lost back-to-back home games by 1-0 results, to Michigan State and Northern Illinois. In addition to IPFW, the Falcons defeated SIUE, Western Illinois, Drexel, Cleveland State and Evansville over the first seven matches of the year. BGSU has scored at least three goals in six of the season's eight wins to date.
• The middle three games in that seven-match winless streak all required overtime. Prior to the three OT matches, the Falcons lost to MSU on a goal with under two minutes left in regulation. BG fell to NIU by an identical 1-0 score, with that match going to an extra session. Then, host Ohio State scored with just three seconds left in the second OT, before BG battled IUPUI to a 2-2, double-OT draw in Indianapolis.
• BGSU went 6-2-0 at home, and the Falcons are 1-5-1 on the road and 1-1-0 in neutral-site matches this season. The Falcons have scored 27 goals and allowed 27 this fall, but BG scored 16 goals and surrendered only six at Cochrane Stadium.
• A pair of juniors from Naperville, Ill., lead the team in scoring. Pat Flynn has 22 points, including nine goals, on the season, and he is ranked among the national leaders in multiple categories. Joe Sullivan has 17 points on six goals and five assists. Sullivan has scored three game-winning goals and Flynn two. Flynn has missed the last two matches due to an injury suffered late in the win over WVU.
• Flynn has three multiple-goal games this fall, with a hat trick vs. Western Illinois (Aug. 30) and two-goal, five-point nights in back-to-back matches vs. Cleveland State (Sept. 6) and Evansville (Sept. 11). Sullivan had his first multi-goal game of the season and the second of his career in the Falcons' win over IPFW, and he was involved in the scoring of both goals at IUPUI, with a goal and an assist.
• Junior Jacob Roth has scored 13 points, while senior Ryan James has 11. Roth scored a goal in three consecutive matches, capped by a diving header to open the scoring in the Wright State match. That was his fifth goal of the season, and he is a perfect 3-for-3 on PKs this fall. James has three goals, and is tied with Sullivan and redshirt freshman Bismark Agyeman for the team assists lead, with five.
• In goal, redshirt junior Ryan Heuton has started 15 of BGSU's 17 matches this season. He has three shutouts, 43 saves and a goals-against average of 1.44. Redshirt junior Nick Landsberger has made two starts, with complete-match efforts vs. IUPUI and Syracuse. He has 10 saves and a GAA of 2.25 this fall.
• A total of five players have started all 15 games this year. That list includes James, Roth, Sullivan, redshirt junior Max Auden and sophomore Alexis Souahy.
• Souahy is the only player to have been on the pitch for all 1576-plus minutes this fall. Roth has played a total of 1573 minutes, while James has played 1539 minutes, Auden 1513 and Sullivan 1464.
• BGSU has taken 88 corner kicks this year, compared to 82 for the opposition. The Falcons had more corners than the opponent in each of the first nine matches of the season, but BG has taken fewer corners than the foes in seven of the last eight games, including each of the last five.
GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM AS WELL AS ON THE PITCH
For the second-straight season, Pat Flynn and Joe Sullivan have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. The BG juniors were two of only three players from the MAC to earn academic all-district honors in 2015. Flynn, an accounting major, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.79. Sullivan, a business administration major, has a 3.89 cumulative GPA at BGSU. On the field, they rank 1-2 on the team in scoring, as Flynn has 22 points and Sullivan 17 this season to date. Both players will see their names placed on the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot.
SCOUTING ASU
Appalachian State enters Tuesday's match with an overall record of 6-8-0, and the Mountaineers are 1-3-0 in Sun Belt Conference play. ASU is looking to snap a three-match losing streak, with all three setbacks coming by a single goal. Most recently, the Mountaineers dropped a 2-1 decision to former MAC member Hartwick on Saturday night (Oct. 31). ASU is 3-2-0 at home, 2-5-0 on the road and 1-1-0 in neutral-site matches this fall. Individually, Stephen Chapman leads the team in scoring, with five goals and 11 points. He has two game-winning goals this year. A total of 10 of Chapman's teammates have at least two points, but none of them have more than six points on the year. Alex Herbst has two goals – both on PKs – and eight other players have one goal apiece. In goal, Paul West has made nine starts, and has 31 saves, one shutout and a goals-against average of 1.88. Jake Chasteen has started five times, and has allowed just one goal in over 452 minutes. He has three shutouts, nine saves and a miniscule 0.20 GAA. Last year, the Mountaineers of head coach Matt Nelson finished 7-8-3 overall and 1-1-2 in Sun Belt play. Nelson welcomed back 14 letterwinners, including nine starters, from that club.
A LOOK AT UA
Akron enters the week with an overall record of 12-3-2, and the Zips have a MAC ledger of 3-0-1 heading into Saturday's BGSU match. The Zips are ranked sixth in the nation in the most recent NSCAA poll. UA saw a nine-match unbeaten streak come to an end on Sunday (Nov. 1), falling to visiting UCLA by a 4-2 final. All three of the Zips' losses this season have come to nationally-ranked opponents, with a road loss to Old Dominion and home setbacks vs. Wake Forest and UCLA. The Zips are 5-2-1 at home heading into the BGSU match, and UA went 7-1-1 on the road during the 2015 regular season. Akron has three players who have scored 20 or more points, led by Richie Laryea's 22 points. Laryea has a team-leading nine goals, while Adam Najem has eight goals and 21 points, and Sam Gainford is right behind with seven goals and 20 points. Gainford leads the Zips with six assists, while Najem has five. Jake Fenlason has been between the posts for every second of every match, and has six shutouts, 66 saves and a 1.30 GAA. A year ago, the Zips went 13-6-2 overall and 4-1-0 in the MAC, winning the league's regular-season title for the 10th consecutive season. Head coach Jared Embick returned 19 letterwinners, including nine starters, from the 2014 team.
THE SERIES
BGSU and Appalachian State are tied, 0-0-1, in the all-time series between the teams. The teams' lone meeting came at a neutral site, as the Falcons and Mountaineers battled to a scoreless draw in the 2010 regular-season opener. That match, played on Sept. 3, 2010, was part of the Davidson adidas Classic in Davidson, N.C.
The Falcons trail Akron, 45-8-3, in that series, and the Zips have won the last 17 meetings. A year ago, UA held off the Brown and Orange in a pair of one-goal decisions. In last year's regular-season matchup, the Zips scored on an early penalty kick and held on for a 1-0 win at Cochrane Stadium (Oc. 11, 2014). Then, the teams met again in the MAC Tournament's championship match at Akron, and Jacob Roth gave the Falcons the lead on a free kick in the second half, but the Zips rallied for a 2-1 victory (Nov. 16, 2014). The Falcons' last win in the series came 13 years ago, a 1-0 triumph at Cochrane (Oct. 27, 2002). BGSU's last victory over the Zips in Akron came in 1997, another 1-0 win (Oct. 3, 1997).
THE 89TH MINUTE (A FEW FINAL FASCINATING FALCON FACTS)
• BGSU's win at Wright State on Tuesday marked the Falcons' fourth-straight victory over the Raiders in the battle for the I-75 Cup. All four of those wins have come by one goal, with all except Tuesday's match requiring overtime. The Falcons are 5-1-0 against the Raiders since the teams' head coaches came up with the idea for the I-75 Cup prior to the 2010 season.
• BGSU is now 7-0-1 this season when scoring two or more goals in a match. The Falcons were 9-1-0 in such matches last fall, with the only loss coming in overtime (3-2 at Duquesne). BGSU is 37-4-5 in the Eric Nichols Era when scoring at least two goals in a game.
• The Falcons have scored three or more goals six times this year, after reaching the three-goal mark a total of four times during all of last season. No BG team has reached the three-goal mark more than six times since the 1997 team scored at least three goals a whopping 11 times.
• In a span of two games, three different Falcons scored the first goal of their respective collegiate careers. Redshirt junior Danny Shea opened the scoring with a long-range strike in the 2-0 win over West Virginia (Oct. 24). Then, at Wright State, sophomore Keaton Reynolds scored his first collegiate goal to tie the match at 2-2 with 15:17 remaining, before freshman Tate Robertson scored the winner with 9:40 to go.
• Freshman Ryan Ross made the first start of his young collegiate career in the Wright State match, and he was in the starting lineup again when the Falcons took on Buffalo. A total of 18 different players have started at least one match for the Falcons this season.
• The Falcons' loss at Buffalo marked BG's first-ever setback in a game when Ryan James scores a goal. BG is now 2-1-0 this year and 5-1-1 all-time in such matches.
• BGSU is 5-0-0 this fall and 13-0-0 all time when Pat Flynn scores a goal. The Falcons are 4-0-1 this year and 10-0-1 all-time when Joe Sullivan finds the back of the net.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Saturday's match at Akron is the Falcons' final game of the regular season. Should the Falcons qualify for the MAC Tournament, BG would face an opponent to be determined in the semifinal round on Friday, Nov. 13. The MAC's regular-season champion will host the conference tournament, which concludes with the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 15.
