Conference office releases preseason coaches poll
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team has been picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference race in 2015. The preseason poll, the result of voting by the conference's six head coaches, was released by the league office on Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 26).
Akron, the defending regular-season and tournament champion, was picked to capture the 2015 MAC regular-season title. The Zips defeated the Falcons, 2-1, in last season's MAC Tournament championship match. Point totals were not released, but the Zips received three of the six first-place votes, and also garnered three of the six votes to win the 2015 MAC Tournament.
Western Michigan and MAC men's soccer affiliate West Virginia were picked to tie for second in the regular-season standings. The Broncos received two votes to win both the regular-season and tournament titles, while the Mountaineers garnered one vote to win each crown.
The Falcons were tabbed for fourth, followed by Buffalo and Northern Illinois.
Head coach Eric Nichols and his staff return 15 letterwinners, including eight starters, from a year ago. The 2014 team finished with an overall record of 14-6-1, and BGSU tied for third in the MAC regular-season standings with a 2-2-1 league ledger. BG's overall win total was the Falcons' highest in 17 years, and BGSU more than doubled the previous year's total. The 2015 team advanced to the championship match of the conference tourney for the first time in 11 seasons.
The 2015 Falcons open the regular season with a pair of home matches this weekend. BGSU hosts SIUE Friday (Aug. 28), in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Cochrane Stadium, and the Orange and Brown returns to Cochrane Sunday afternoon (Aug. 30) to face Western Illinois in a 1:00 p.m. start. Admission to all Falcon home soccer matches is free.
