BRIGHT LIGHTS, B!G CITY
Following the Dayton match, the Falcons will host nationally-ranked Michigan State University at Cochrane Stadium next Tuesday (Sept. 29). That game will be televised by BCSN in the Toledo area. And, for fans not in the Toledo area, the BGSU-MSU contest is also scheduled to be available via ESPN3.Â
POLL POSITION
The Falcons have broken into the College Soccer News poll this week. BGSU is listed 30th in the latest CSN rankings, released Monday morning (Sept. 21), after receiving votes in each of that web site's prior two polls.
SULLIVAN NAMED MAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
On Monday (Sept. 21), junior Joe Sullivan was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, earning that honor for the first time in his career. Sullivan picked up the award after scoring two goals, including the game-winning marker, in Friday's (Sept. 18) 3-2 win over IPFW. After the Falcons fell behind early in the second half, Sullivan scored to tie the match in the 57th minute. The Mastodons took the lead again, before BGSU evened the contest with under 13 minutes left in the second half. Then, Sullivan worked a nifty give-and-go play with Pat Flynn in the box, taking Flynn's return pass and scoring what proved to be the winner with 9:09 to go. The game-winning goal was Sullivan's third of the season.
'FLYNN & SULLY' SOUNDS LIKE THE NAME OF A BUDDY COP SHOW THAT WE'D DEFINITELY WATCH
• Pat Flynn has received many accolades for his scoring prowess during his time at BGSU, and deservedly so. However, Flynn is not the only junior who is racking up the goals for the Falcons. In fact, he is not even the only junior from Naperville, Ill., who is finding the back of the net with regularity. Like Flynn, Joe Sullivan is listed among not only the MAC, but the national leaders.
• Flynn leads the team with 22 points this season, on nine goals and four assists. Sullivan is second on the Falcons in both goals and points. He has 13 points on five goals and three helpers this season. The two have combined for 14 of BG's 17 goals this year to date, including five of the Falcons' six game-winning goals.
• Flynn and Sullivan both rank among the top-10 in the MAC in every offensive category kept. They are both ranked among the top-three players in six of those nine categories.
• On the national lists, Flynn's name pops up on all nine offensive statistical categories kept by the NCAA, while Sullivan's name can be found on each of those same nine lists. Flynn is second in the nation in both total points and points per game, and he ranks third in total goals, goals per game and shots on goal per game. Flynn leads the MAC in all five of those categories.
• Sullivan is second in the nation in game-winning goals, and he ranks 11th in the country in total points and 13th in total goals.
• Either Sullivan or Flynn (or both) have been involved in the scoring of 15 of BG's 17 goals this season, including each of the last nine.
• Flynn has assisted on three of Sullivan's goals this season, and Sullivan has picked up an assist on three of Flynn's goals in 2015.
• Flynn has eight career game-winning goals (in one year and seven matches) at BG, while Sullivan has seven GWG in his Falcon tenure.
FAST FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons are 6-1-0 on the season. BGSU won the first five matches of the year before suffering a 1-0 loss to Robert Morris (Sept. 13). But, the Falcons bounced back with a 3-2 win over IPFW on Friday night (Sept. 18). BG has defeated SIUE, Western Illinois, Drexel, Cleveland State and Evansville in addition to IPFW, with multiple-goal wins against four of those six opponents.
• BGSU is 5-0-0 at home and 1-1-0 in neutral-site matches this year to date. The Falcons have outscored the opponents by a 17-6 count this season, including 14-4 at Cochrane Stadium. BG has already clinched a winning record at home in 2015.
• The Falcons broke into the national rankings two weeks ago (Sept. 8), as BG was listed 24th in the nation in the NSCAA poll. That marked BG's first time in the top 25 since Sept. 6, 1999. Following the loss to RMU, BGSU received votes in both the NSCAA poll as well as the College Soccer News Top-30 poll last week. This week, BGSU has moved into 30th place in the latter poll (this week's NSCAA poll has not yet been announced).
• BGSU was ranked fifth in the Great Lakes Region last week. BG was fourth in the region in the first poll of the year, and the Falcons moved up to second two weeks ago. Last week, BG trailed Creighton (the number-one team in the nation), Akron, Western Michigan and Marquette. The NSCAA national and regional polls are released each Tuesday afternoon.
• A pair of juniors from Naperville, Ill., lead the team in scoring. Pat Flynn has 22 points, including nine goals, on the season. Joe Sullivan has 13 points on five goals and three assists. Sullivan has scored three game-winning goals and Flynn two this year to date
• Flynn already has three multiple-goal games this fall, with a hat trick vs. Western Illinois (Aug. 30) and two-goal, five-point nights in back-to-back matches vs. Cleveland State (Sept. 6) and Evansville (Sept. 11). Sullivan had his first multi-goal game of the season and the second of his career in Friday's win over IPFW.
• Flynn has scored at least one goal in five of BGSU's seven games so far, while Sullivan found the net in four of those games.
• Senior Ryan James has eight points, while redshirt freshman Bismark Agyeman has scored five points and junior Jacob Roth four. James has scored two goals and four assists, and is tied with Flynn for fifth in the MAC and 10th in the nation in assists. Agyeman leads the team and ranks fourth in the country with five assists.
• In goal, redshirt junior Ryan Heuton has played all 630 minutes this season. He has a pair of shutouts, 15 saves and a goals-against average of 0.86. Heuton has allowed only 10 goals in his BGSU career, spanning nearly 1385 minutes, for an overall GAA of just 0.65.
• Heuton is one of eight players to have started all seven games this year. That list also includes Agyeman, James, Roth, Sullivan, redshirt junior Max Auden, sophomore Alexis Souahy and freshman Tate Robertson.
• Souahy is the only field player to have been on the pitch for all 630 minutes this fall. Roth has played 626 minutes, while James has played 603 minutes.
• Senior center back Jake Genrich has played every minute of every match in which he has been healthy. Genrich missed the trip to Marshall due to injury, but has played in all 450 minutes of each of the other five matches this fall.
SO YOU'RE SAYING IT HELPS TO SCORE GOALS
• The Falcons have scored three or more goals in five of the first seven games this year, after reaching the three-goal mark a total of four times during all of last season. In fact, no BG team has reached the three-goal mark more than four times since 1999 (six times).
• The Falcons were 9-1-0 when scoring two or more goals last season, with the only loss coming in overtime (3-2 at Duquesne). BGSU is now 35-4-4 in the Eric Nichols Era (including a perfect 5-0-0 this season) when scoring at least two goals in a game.
11 FACTS ABOUT NUMBER 11 (A FEW NOTES ABOUT PAT FLYNN)
• Junior Pat Flynn scored 14 goals and 32 points last season, and tied for second nationally among 2015 returnees in total goals, goals per game (0.67) and total points. And, it appears Flynn has picked up right where he left off.
• Flynn has scored 22 points, including nine goals, as BGSU has gotten off to a 6-1 start to the season. He has scored nearly twice as many goals as any other player in the MAC (three players around the league, including teammate Joe Sullivan, have five goals).
• Heading into the Dayton match, Flynn has totals of 23 goals and 54 points in just 28 games at BGSU, for averages of 0.82 goals and 1.93 points per match as a Falcon.
• Flynn is the active career leader – among all NCAA Division-I players – in goals per game. He would be the active career leader in points per game as well, but that list only includes players with 60 or more career points.
• Early in his second season at BGSU, Flynn is already threatening to break into the top 10 on several school career lists. He is just one goal and five points away from tying for 10th in BGSU history on those respective charts.
• Flynn had three multiple-goal games in the Falcons' first five contests of the season, with a hat trick against Western Illinois (Aug. 30) and two-goal, five-point outings in back-to-back contests, against Cleveland State (Sept. 6) and Evansville (Sept. 11).
• For Flynn, the hat trick vs. WIU was the second of his collegiate career. He now has six multi-goal games, with three last year and three more this fall.
• Flynn, as mentioned, is in his second season at BGSU. He has scored a goal in the season opener in each of those two years. In the second game of the season, Flynn is AVERAGING four goals and 8.50 points per game as a Falcon. He had five goals and 11 points vs. Findlay last year, tying the school single-match records for goals and points, and he had a hat trick this fall vs. Western Illinois.
• With nine goals and 22 points through seven games this season, Flynn is actually behind last year's pace. In his first seven games at BGSU, he scored 12 goals and had 26 points.
• Flynn's 2014 goal and point totals were the highest by a Falcon since the 1996 season.
• He led the MAC in total goals and game-winning goals (six) a year ago, and ranked second in the league in total points, goals per game (0.67) and points per game (1.52). Flynn finished the season ranked among the national leaders in all five of those categories, as he was eighth or better on each list.
SCOUTING DAYTON
Dayton is 4-3-1 on the season, and the Flyers bring a two-game unbeaten streak into Wednesday's BGSU match. Last week, UD topped visiting Northern Kentucky, 4-0, then went to Kalamazoo and played Western Michigan to a 1-1 draw. The Flyers became the first team to score on WMU this season. In addition to NKU, Dayton has defeated Cleveland State at home and James Madison and High Point on the road. UD has lost to Radford, Marquette and Oakland. The Flyers lead the Atlantic 10 Conference in six of eight team offensive categories, and Dayton is ninth in the nation in goals, with 15. Amass Amankona has five of those 15 goals, and has 12 points on the season. Amankona leads the A-10 in both goals and points. In goal, Justin Saliba has started six of the eight games, and has 14 saves, two shutouts and a goals-against average of 1.12. Last year, the Flyers finished with an overall record of 7-7-5 and a league ledger of 3-3-2. Head coach Dennis Currier welcomed back 16 letterwinners, including nine starters, from that team.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Dayton, 16-9-0, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Flyers have won the last two meetings. The teams met in all but two seasons during the two-decade span from 1981-2000, but BG and UD have faced off only once since that 2000 campaign. The teams' last matchup came in 2009, Eric Nichols' first season at the BG helm. Despite a hat trick by BGSU's Cameron Hepple, the Falcons fell by a 4-3 score at Baujan Field (Sept. 18, 2009). Prior to '09, the Falcons and Flyers had not met since 2000, when host UD posted a 3-1 win, snapping a two-match BGSU series winning streak. BG's last win over Dayton came in the teams' last meeting at Cochrane Stadium, a 3-1 decision on Sept. 1, 1999. The Falcons are 10-3-0 in home matches and 6-6-0 in away games against the Flyers through the years. Those series matchups include a 4-1 UD win in 1965, in BGSU's first match as a varsity program.
CLIMBING CAREER CHARTS
A few of the 2015 Falcons are adding to their career point totals in rapid fashion. Junior Pat Flynn, in just his second year at BG, now has totals of 23 goals and 54 points in just 28 career matches. He is only one goal and five points from moving into the top 10 on those respective BGSU career charts.
Junior Joe Sullivan is the lone active Falcon with double-digit totals in both goals and assists. Sullivan now has 35 career points on 12 goals and 11 assists.
Senior Ryan James had four points against Evansville, and now has 28 career points on seven goals and 14 assists. His assist total leads all current BG players. Juniors Jacob Roth and Max Auden have 22 and 18 career points, respectively.
#FALCONFAST
While the term #FalconFast is most commonly associated with coach Dino Babers and the BGSU football team, it could also be used to describe another group of futbol Falcons. Twice in the season's first four games, the men's soccer team took the lead with under four minutes gone. Junior Pat Flynn scored just 2:36 into the win over Western Illinois (Aug. 30). Junior Joe Sullivan, who assisted on that goal, scored off of a Flynn feed with only 3:56 gone against Cleveland State on Sunday night (Sept. 6). On both occasions, the goal came on the first shot attempt of the match.
THE 89TH MINUTE (A FEW FINAL NOTES)
• The Falcons' victory over IPFW marked the 50th win for Eric Nichols since he took the BGSU helm prior to the 2009 season. Nichols, in his seventh season with the Falcons, has an overall record of 109-74-21 in his 11th year as a collegiate head coach.
• As a team, the Falcons lead the nation in no fewer than four statistical categories: total assists, assists per game, shots per game and shots on goal per game. BG is second in the country in points per game, third in total points and sixth in both goals and goals per game.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following the Dayton match, the Falcons will close the month of September with a match vs. nationally-ranked Michigan State next Tuesday (Sept. 29) at Cochrane Stadium.
