BRIGHT LIGHTS, B!G CITY
Tuesday's Michigan State match will be televised by BCSN in the Toledo area. Additionally, the contest is also scheduled to be available on the web via ESPN3.Â
SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
Tuesday's matchup at Cochrane Stadium features a pair of the NCAA's active career leaders. BGSU junior Pat Flynn leads all current NCAA Division-I players in career goals per game (0.79). Michigan State goalkeeper Zach Bennett enters Tuesday's match with a total of 31 complete-match shutouts, the most of any current NCAA 'keeper.Â
'FLYNN & SULLY' SOUNDS LIKE THE NAME OF A BUDDY COP SHOW THAT WE'D DEFINITELY WATCH
• Pat Flynn has received many accolades for his scoring prowess during his time at BGSU, and deservedly so. However, Flynn is not the only junior who is racking up the goals for the Falcons. In fact, he is not even the only junior from Naperville, Ill., who has found the back of the net with regularity this fall. Like Flynn, Joe Sullivan is listed among not only the MAC, but the national leaders.
• Flynn leads the team with 22 points this season, on nine goals and four assists. Sullivan is second on the Falcons in both goals and points, with 13 points on five goals and three helpers this season. The two have combined for 14 of BG's 17 goals this year to date, including five of the Falcons' six game-winning goals.
• Flynn and Sullivan both rank among the top-10 in the MAC in every offensive category kept. They are both ranked among the top-four players in seven of those nine categories, and rank one-two on five of those lists.
• On the national lists, Flynn's name pops up on all nine offensive statistical categories kept by the NCAA, while Sullivan's name can be found on each of those same nine lists. Flynn is second in the nation in total points and points per game, and he ranks third in the country in total goals, fourth in goals per game and sixth in shots on goal per game. Flynn leads the MAC in all five of those categories.
• Sullivan is second in the nation in game-winning goals, and he ranks 14th in the country in total points and 19th in total goals. He is also listed among the country's top-40 players in shots and shots on goal per game, goals per game and points per game.
• Either Sullivan or Flynn (or both) have been involved in the scoring of 15 of BG's 17 goals this season, including each of the last nine.
• Flynn has assisted on three of Sullivan's goals this season, and Sullivan has picked up an assist on three of Flynn's goals in 2015.
• Flynn has eight career game-winning goals (in one year and eight matches) at BG, while Sullivan has seven GWG in his Falcon tenure.
FAST FALCON FACTS
• The Falcons are 6-2-0 on the season. BGSU won the first five matches of the year before suffering a 1-0 loss to Robert Morris (Sept. 13). The Falcons bounced back with a 3-2 win over IPFW (Sept. 18), but BG headed to Dayton and lost, 6-0, to the Flyers on Wednesday night (Sept. 23). In addition to IPFW, the Falcons have defeated SIUE, Western Illinois, Drexel, Cleveland State and Evansville this season, with multiple-goal wins against four of those six opponents.
• BGSU is 5-0-0 at home, 0-1-0 on the road and 1-1-0 in neutral-site matches this year to date. The Falcons have outscored the opponents by a 17-12 count, including 14-4 at Cochrane Stadium. BG has already clinched a winning record at home in 2015.
• The Falcons broke into the national rankings three weeks ago (Sept. 8), as BG was listed 24th in the nation in the NSCAA poll. That marked BG's first time in the top 25 since Sept. 6, 1999. Following the loss to RMU, BGSU received votes in both the NSCAA poll as well as the College Soccer News Top-30 poll two weeks ago. Last week, BGSU moved into 30th place in the latter poll. This week (Sept. 28), BGSU is receiving votes in the CSN poll after the loss at UD. The complete weekly list is on page 11 of these notes.
• BGSU was ranked sixth in the Great Lakes Region last week. BG was fourth in the region in the first poll of the year, and the Falcons moved up to second three weeks ago before dropping to fifth the following week. The NSCAA national and regional polls are released each Tuesday afternoon.
• A pair of juniors from Naperville, Ill., lead the team in scoring. Pat Flynn has 22 points, including nine goals, on the season. Joe Sullivan has 13 points on five goals and three assists. Sullivan has scored three game-winning goals and Flynn two this year to date
• Flynn already has three multiple-goal games this fall, with a hat trick vs. Western Illinois (Aug. 30) and two-goal, five-point nights in back-to-back matches vs. Cleveland State (Sept. 6) and Evansville (Sept. 11). Sullivan had his first multi-goal game of the season and the second of his career in the Falcons' win over IPFW.
• Flynn has scored at least one goal in five of BGSU's eight games so far, while Sullivan found the net in four of those games.
• Senior Ryan James has eight points, while redshirt freshman Bismark Agyeman has scored five points and junior Jacob Roth four. James has two goals and four assists, and is tied with Flynn for fifth in the MAC and 15th in the nation in assists. Agyeman leads the team and ranks fourth in the country with five assists.
• In goal, redshirt junior Ryan Heuton has played all 720 minutes this season. He has a pair of shutouts, 18 saves and a goals-against average of 1.50. Heuton has an overall career GAA of just 0.98 in his BGSU tenure, which spans nearly 1475 minutes.
• Heuton is one of eight players to have started all eight games this year. That list also includes Agyeman, James, Roth, Sullivan, redshirt junior Max Auden, sophomore Alexis Souahy and freshman Tate Robertson.
• Souahy is the only field player to have been on the pitch for all 720 minutes this fall. Roth has played 716 minutes, while James has played 689 minutes and Auden 671.
SO YOU'RE SAYING IT HELPS TO SCORE GOALS
• The Falcons have scored three or more goals in five of the first eight games this year, after reaching the three-goal mark a total of four times during all of last season. In fact, no BG team has reached the three-goal mark more than four times since 1999 (six times).
• The Falcons were 9-1-0 when scoring two or more goals last season, with the only loss coming in overtime (3-2 at Duquesne). BGSU is now 35-4-4 in the Eric Nichols Era (including a perfect 5-0-0 this season) when scoring at least two goals in a game.
11 FACTS ABOUT NUMBER 11 (A FEW NOTES ABOUT PAT FLYNN)
• Junior Pat Flynn scored 14 goals and 32 points last season, and tied for second nationally among 2015 returnees in total goals, goals per game (0.67) and total points. And, it appears Flynn has picked up right where he left off.
• Flynn has scored 22 points, including nine goals, as BGSU has gotten off to a 6-2 start to the season. He has scored nearly twice as many goals as any other player in the MAC (three players around the league, including teammate Joe Sullivan, have five goals).
• Heading into the MSU match, Flynn has totals of 23 goals and 54 points in just 29 games at BGSU, for averages of 0.79 goals and 1.86 points per match as a Falcon.
• Flynn is the active career leader – among all NCAA Division-I players – in goals per game. He would be the active career leader in points per game as well, but that list only includes players with 60 or more career points.
• Early in his second season at BGSU, Flynn is already threatening to break into the top 10 on several school career lists. He is just one goal and five points away from tying for 10th in BGSU history on those respective charts.
• Flynn had three multiple-goal games in the Falcons' first five contests of the season, with a hat trick against Western Illinois (Aug. 30) and two-goal, five-point outings in back-to-back contests, against Cleveland State (Sept. 6) and Evansville (Sept. 11).
• For Flynn, the hat trick vs. WIU was the second of his collegiate career. He now has six multi-goal games, with three last year and three more this fall.
• Flynn, as mentioned, is in his second season at BGSU. He has scored a goal in the season opener in each of those two years. In the second game of the season, Flynn is AVERAGING four goals and 8.50 points per game as a Falcon. He tied the school single-match records for goals (5) and points (11) last year vs. Findlay, and had a hat trick this fall vs. Western Illinois.
• With nine goals and 22 points through eight games this season, Flynn is actually behind last year's pace. In his first eight games at BGSU, he scored 12 goals and had 26 points.
• Flynn's 2014 goal and point totals were the highest by a Falcon since the 1996 season.
• He led the MAC in total goals and game-winning goals (six) a year ago, and ranked second in the league in total points, goals per game (0.67) and points per game (1.52). Flynn finished the season ranked among the national leaders in all five of those categories, as he was eighth or better on each list.
SCOUTING MSU
Michigan State is 4-3-1 on the season, and the Spartans are off to a 1-0-1 start in Big Ten Conference play. MSU posted a 3-1 win at Rutgers Friday night (Sept. 25) to snap a three-match winless streak. All three matches during that streak, however, came against teams ranked in the top-15 in the nation, including a one-goal loss to No. 1 Creighton and a tie vs. No. 8 Maryland. The Spartans are 2-2-1 at home and 2-1-0 on the road this season to date. MSU has scored nine goals and allowed seven this year. Three Spartans have two goals apiece this fall, and one of those three players, Ryan Sierakowski, has team-leading totals of two assists and six points. In goal, Zach Bennett has played all but 14 minutes this season, and has three shutouts, 24 saves and a goals-against average of 0.86. As mentioned earlier, Bennett is the NCAA's active career leader with 31 career shutouts, and he is also the winningest 'keeper in program history. Last year, the Spartans went 12-5-6 overall and 4-2-2 in Big Ten play, and MSU advanced all the way to the Round of 8 in the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year.
A LOOK AT NIU
Northern Illinois enters the week with an overall record of 4-2-0. The Huskies, who have already topped the win total for all of last season, travel to Eastern Illinois for a Tuesday (Sept. 29) contest before heading to BG for Saturday's match. Northern is a perfect 3-0-0 at home, and the Huskies are 1-1-0 on the road and 0-1-0 in neutral-site contests. The team's most recent outing was a 2-0 loss on the road against the number-one team in the country, Creighton. NIU has defeated Green Bay, Florida Atlantic, Stetson and Marquette this season to date. Luke Read leads the team with six points, and he has three of the Huskies' seven goals this season to date. No other player has more than one goal or two points. In goal, Andrew Glaeser has played every minute of every match, and has 17 saves, three shutouts and a GAA of 1.11. Last season, coach Eric Luzzi's team went 3-9-5 overall and 0-4-1 in MAC play. Luzzi welcomed back 12 letterwinners, including seven starters, from that club.
THE SERIES
The Falcons trail Michigan State, 20-16-6, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Falcons are looking to snap a 13-match winless streak against the Spartans. Last year, Tim Kreutz scored on a rebound with just over 10 minutes left in the second half, and the No 16 Spartans escaped Cochrane Stadium with a 1-0 win (Sept. 24, 2014). The first six BGSU-MSU matches in the Eric Nichols Era have seen MSU win by a single goal on five occasions, while the teams battled to a scoreless draw in 2011. BGSU's last win over State was a 3-1 victory on the road on Sept. 17, 2001.
BGSU trails Northern Illinois, 16-9-1, in that series, but the Falcons have won the last two meetings and are unbeaten in the last three matchups. Last year, the Brown and Orange downed the Huskies in DeKalb, 2-1, on the final day of the regular season (Nov. 8, 2014). Naperville, Ill., natives Joe Sullivan and Max Auden scored BGSU's goals in that match, which clinched a MAC Tournament berth for the Falcons. Two years ago, in the teams' last meeting at Cochrane, the Falcons picked up the win, 1-0, on a 'Golden Goal' by Anthony Grant (Oct. 12, 2013). Prior to a scoreless draw between the teams in 2012, the Huskies had won six-straight matches vs. the Falcons. BG has records of 7-6-0 at home, 2-9-1 on the road and 0-1-0 in neutral-site meetings vs. the Huskies through the years.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following this week's two matches, the Falcons will play eight of the regular season's final nine matches on the road. That odyssey begins with a trip to Columbus to face Ohio State on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
