Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University women's soccer coach Lindsay Basalyga and her staff have announced the addition of six student-athletes to the program for the 2016 season. Kathleen Duwve (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Northview High School), Monica Florez (Bogota, Colombia/Gimnasio Colombo Británico), Sam Howshar (Denver, Colorado/Smoky Hill High School), Maureen Kennedy (Cypress, California/Los Alamitos High School, Rachel Muller (Castle Rock, Colorado/Doulgas County High School) and Chelsee Washington (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron High School) will all join the Falcon family on the field next fall.
"We couldn't be more excited about the recruiting class we have for 2016," said head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "We took our time with this class so we could find players and 'people' who fit our goals and values as a program and we ended up with 6 players who will not only raise our level of play, but compete for playing time immediately. This class is not only diverse in skill set, but will diversify our culture as we gain a few more players from west of the Mississippi."
Duwve (goalkeeper), like current Falcon Abbie Bacon, is a product of nearby Sylvania, Ohio. She is wrapping up her career as a Wildcat where she is a member of the basketball and track and field teams. Duwve has accumulated eight varsity letter, four of which are from soccer. She was elected team captain this season under head coach Rick Burgin. The Wildcats, anchored by Duwve in goal, were 2015 Northern Lakes League Champions, 2014 District Champions and 2013 District Runners Up. She was named First-Team NLL (2014, 2015), NWOSSCA Division 1 All-District Second-Team (2014), NWOSSCA Division 1 All-District First-Team (2015), OHSAA Division 1 All-State Second-Team (2015) and the 2015 conference player of the year. Duwve was a member of Pacesetter Soccer Club beginning from her U8 team through U17. She now competes for Greater Toledo Futbol Club Impact's U18 team.
Duwve hopes to major in biology with plans to become a sports medicine doctor or pediatric orthopedic surgeon. She is also a member of National Honors Society and was a part of the 2015 NWOSSCA All-Academic team.
"Kathleen is a great shot stopper with Bowling Green State University roots. She has great hands and is fearless off her line. Adding Kathleen not only gives us added depth in goal this year, but sets us up for success in the coming years," Basalyga said.
Florez (goalkeeper), who hails from Bogota, Columbia, played her high school soccer at Gimnasio Colombo Británico under head coach Ignacio Romero where she was elected team captain from 2013-15. Florez helped her team to a 2013 championship and the 2014 and 2015 Runners-Up. In 2013, she played in Paraguay in the U17 South American Championships, placing second. A member of the Colombia U17 National team and Bogota soccer team, Florez played in Costa Rice for the 2014 World Cup. This past year she went to Brazil for the South American U20 Championship.
Florez has been recognized for distinguished academic performance and good behavior, also playing volleyball in high school. She is currently undecided on a major.
"Monica is extremely athletic, good with her feet, and brings with her a South American flare that will enrich our culture. Having competed in a World Cup with her youth national team, she has a mentality that will make our program better day one of preseason," added Basalyga.
Howshar (forward), a native of Denver, Colorado, is a four-year letter award winner and serves as her team's captain for the 2015-16 season. She helped lead her team to be the 2013 5A Centennial League Champions in a season where she was awarded MVP, First-Team All-5A Centennial League and Second-Team All-State. In her sophomore season, Howshar collected an MVP award, First-Team All-5A Centennial League, First-Team All-State and Centennial League Player of the Year awards. Her accolades continued last season, as she was named MVP, First-Team All-5A Centennial League and First-Team All-State. Howshar is a member of the Colorado Storm ECNL club team.
She intends to major in business while at Bowling Green.
"Sam is a goal scorer who is nifty on the ball, confident going 1v1, and extremely dangerous with both feet. She will be a great compliment to last year's top goal scorers Erica Hubert, Mikaela Couch, and Skylar Fleak," said Basalyga.
Kennedy (defender) will head to BGSU from Los Alamitos High School in Cypress, California, where she was elected team captain for her senior season and has earned three varsity letters for soccer, along with lettering in cross country and track and field. She started her freshman campaign out strong, helping guide her team to a first place finish in the Sunset League. So far this season, Kennedy has already netted three goals, which surpasses her goal total from her first three years combined. Kennedy, a two-time All-Sunset League Academic team member (2014, 2015), is a 2016 Mater Dei Premier Champion who is also a member of Strikers FC ECNL club team.
She intends to major in psychology and is a member of National Honors Society along with California Scholarship Federation. Her mother played soccer at SUNY Plattsburg.
"Maureen is a versatile defender who could find herself anywhere along the backline. She is clean on the ball, confident in both long and short range possession, and she is a solid 1v1 defender," said Basalyga.
Muller (forward), a four-year letter award winner on the pitch at Douglas County High School in Castle Rock, Colorado has been the team's leading scorer all three years of her high school playing career, totaling 31 goals along with 15 assists. Muller, a senior season captain, was named Second-Team All-Conference her freshman season and earned First-Team All-Conference her sophomore and junior years. In her freshman year, the team placed first at Air Academy and made it to the state playoffs. Like Howshar, Muller is also a member of Colorado Storm ECNL club team, where she was the leading scorer for her U16 team (2013-14) and U17 team (2014-15). She has been named MVP three times between 2012 and 2015, while placing second in the Mountain West Conference (2012, 2013), as well as an ECNL National Champion Qualifier Top 16 (2012), ECNL National Champion Qualifier Top 8 (2013), ECNL North American League Qualifier (2014), and ECNL Champions League Top 32 (2015).
Muller, the recipient of the 2015 Huskie of the Quarter award, plans to major in sports medicine while at Bowling Green. She is a part of the varsity choir at Douglas County High School.
"Rachel is not only a goal scorer like her teammate Sam Howshar, but she is incredibly feisty and hardworking on the defensive side of the ball. Her work rate paired with her knack for goal will make us stronger in the attacking half of the game," added Basalyga.
Washington (midfielder), who will come to BGSU from Carrollton, Texas, earned four varsity letters from Hebron High School under coach Eric Ramirez, and served as team captain in her senior season. Named MVP Midfielder of the Year her sophomore and junior seasons, Washington was named to the 2012 and 2015 Topdrawer Soccer Girls to Watch List, as well as a 2013 National Elite Prep Showcase Top Texas Player to Watch. She was also named as an All-District First-Time Midfielder as a freshman. A 2014 undefeated State Champion, Washington was a member of the ODP Camp All Star team in 2009-10. Last season, the Texas native helped her team to a district title in 2015. Washington has been a member of the Solar Chelsea Soccer Club and Dallas Texans Soccer Club. In her time with Solar SC, Washington was a part of winning the 2014 ECNL North American Championship. Her ECNL U17 team finished fourth in the region in 2015.
Planning to major in criminal justice, Washington, whose cousin played football for LSU and now in the pros with the San Francisco 49ers, hopes to eventually work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"Chelsee is a box to box midfielder with a tremendous work rate. She can link up the game, is strong on tackles, and has no problem taking dangerous long range chances on goal," said Basalyga.
