THREE IS A MAGIC NUMBER (AND SO IS 12)
Freshman Angela Perry hit the first three-point field goal of her career on Wednesday night (Feb. 21) vs. Buffalo, and junior Maddie Cole knocked down her first triple of the season later in that same game.
A total of 12 different Falcons now have scored from the arc this year, marking the third-straight season BG has pulled off that feat. Last season, all 12 Falcons on the roster made at least one three-point field goal. Two seasons ago, all 12 players who attempted a long-distance shot on the season hit at least one triple try.
THE FALCONS: A QUICK OVERVIEW
BGSU is 10-16 on the season, and the Falcons are 2-13 in Mid-American Conference play. BG is 5-8 at the Stroh Center, 4-8 in true road games and 1-0 in neutral-site contests, and the Orange and Brown will enter the Miami game looking to snap a nine-game losing streak.
Heading into the matchup at Miami, Carly Santoro leads the Falcons in scoring, with 13.1 ppg, while three of her teammates are averaging over 8.5 points per outing. Santoro is nearly averaging a double-double, with a team-leading 9.0 rpg. She ranks third in the MAC in rebounds. Her 11 double-doubles this season is the highest total by a BG player in 20 years.
Sydney Lambert has 9.9 ppg, while Andrea Cecil and Haley Puk are averaging 8.7 and 8.6 ppg, respectively. Caterrion Thompson (5.8 ppg) is fifth on the Falcons in scoring, and she ranks fourth in the MAC in three-point percentage (40.5%; 30-of-74).
Lambert leads the team in assists, with 2.0 per game, while Santoro has 1.8 helpers per contest. Lambert (1.5) and Santoro (1.5) are ranked 1-2 on the team in steals per game, as Lambert has 40 and Santoro 39. Lambert has knocked down 50 three-point field goals this year, while Puk has hit 39 and Caterrion Thompson 30.
Puk is fourth in the league in free-throw percentage, having made 82.5% of her shots from the stripe (52-of-63) to date.
In MAC play, Santoro has BG-best averages of 11.9 ppg and 8.1 rpg, while Lambert has 9.2 ppg, Caterrion Thompson 7.6 and Puk 7.4. Three Falcons are ranked among the top-10 in the MAC in three-point accuracy, as Kennedy Williams is currently seventh (41.2%; 14-of-34), Thompson eighth (40.4%; 23-of-57) and Puk 10th (37.3%; 19-of-51). The Falcons are second in the MAC in three-pointers made (7.5 per game) in league contests. Puk is fourth in the league in free-throw accuracy (85.7%).
WEDNESDAYS WITH WILLIAMS
Freshman point guard Kennedy Williams is averaging 3.2 points per game this winter, and is scoring 4.5 ppg in MAC play to date. Over the Falcons' last six Wednesday games, however, Williams has averaged 6.8 points per contest.
Entering the spring semester, Williams' career-high total for points in a game was five. But, in midweek MAC matchups since that time, she has scored at least five points in all six games. Williams tied her then-career best with five points at Central Michigan, then had six vs. Kent State and seven at Ball State. She scored a career-high 10 points in the road match vs. KSU, and had six points vs. Western Michigan and seven against Buffalo.
No matter the day of the week, Williams has certainly stepped up her play as of late. She is shooting 50 percent from the field over the last six games, going 15-for-30 from the floor after shooting 13-for-37 in BG's first 20 contests. From the arc, Williams shot a very respectable 9-for-25 (36.0%) in her first 20 games, but has gone 9-for-19 (47.4%) in the last six outings.
THREE-MARKABLE
Three current Falcons are on the school's top-20 list for career three-point field goals made. Sydney Lambert, just a junior, is fifth in school history with 177 successful treys in 85 games. Only two players on that entire list, Lambert (2.08) and first-place Lauren Prochaska (2.30), have made more than two triples per game.
Seniors Haley Puk and Rachel Myers are ranked 15th and 16th, respectively, in career three-pointers at BG. Puk has made 116 long-range shots as a Falcon, while Myers has hit 115 shots from beyond the arc.
FALCONS VS. THE MAC
The Falcons continue to own the best record in MAC history. Entering the Miami contest, BGSU has an all-time record of 404-208 (.661) in MAC regular-season games, for the most wins and highest winning percentage of all league institutions.
And, BG leads the series with all 11 MAC foes, making the Falcons the only team in the league with a winning series record against every other school. BG also has the most overall victories and highest overall winning pct. of any league institution.
SCOUTING MIAMI
Miami is 17-9 on the season, and the RedHawks are 9-6 in MAC play. After going 1-4 to begin conference action, MU has won eight of the last 10 contests, including a 77-50 win at Akron on Wednesday night. MU is 9-3 at home, 7-6 on the road and 1-0 in neutral-site matchups this season. In the MAC, the RedHawks are 4-3 at Millett Hall and 5-3 in hostile venues. Individually, Lauren Dickerson ranks third in the MAC in scoring, with 20.2 points per game. She also has 5.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game to lead the team in both categories, and has made 85 three-point field goals this year to date. Kendall McCoy has 12.5 ppg and a team-high 6.2 rebounds per contest, while three other RedHawks are scoring between seven and eight points per game. Last year, Miami went 11-21 overall and 5-13 in conference action. First-year head coach Megan Duffy took over a RedHawk team that returned all 12 letterwinners from a year ago.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Miami, 51-30, in the all-time series between the teams, and BG has won six of the last nine meetings, but the RedHawks have captured the last two matchups. MU won a narrow 66-62 decision at the Stroh Center earlier this month (Feb. 3, 2018). In the teams' last meeting in Oxford, the Falcons won a 61-59 thriller just over a year ago (Feb. 18, 2017). BG is 24-14 in home games, 21-15 in road contests and 6-1 in neutral-site games vs. the Redskins/RedHawks over the years.
DOWN THE ROAD
Following the Miami game, the Brown and Orange will return home to face Akron on Wednesday evening (Feb. 28). That game, which begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center, will mark Senior Night for the Falcons, with Rachel Myers, Haley Puk and senior managers Connor Eli and Jason Hosinski recognized prior to tipoff.
Then, the Falcons' month-long trend of Wednesday home games and weekend trips ends with a game at Buffalo next Saturday (March 3). That contest concludes the regular-season schedule for BG.
The MAC Tournament begins on Monday evening, March 5, and the Falcons will be on the road for the first round, facing an opponent to be determined.
