BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by Eastern Michigan University, 4-3, Sunday (April 1) afternoon at Steller Field. Eastern Michigan won the weekend series, 2-1, as the Eagles also won Friday's contest.
Bowling Green is now 8-19 on the season, while EMU improves to 8-17. Both teams are 3-3 in Mid-American Conference play.
"I can't fault our effort today. Our kids played extremely hard all weekend," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We were just one hit away from winning that ballgame. We had so many chances in so many innings, but we just couldn't get that one hit."
Bowling Green had the tying run on second base in the ninth inning, as Riley Minorik scored Jake Wilson with a two-out, two-strike double. However, EMU's Caleb Hester struck out the final batter of the game to preserve the win for the Eagles.
The Falcons will hit the road for a non-conference showdown at Kent State on Tuesday, April 3. Bowling Green then travels to Oxford, Ohio for a three-game series at Miami, beginning Friday, April 6.
ADDITIONAL GAME NOTES
• After going 3-for-3 with two home runs and a double in yesterday's contest, Randy Righter went 3-for-4 at the plate.
• Jake Wilson went 2-for-4 with one run, one RBI and one walk. Wilson brought the Falcons within one run at 3-2 with an RBI single up the middle in the fourth inning.
• Joe McGuinness turned in a 2-for-2 day as the team's designated hitter.
• Riley Minorik drove in the final run of the game, as his RBI double in the ninth trimmed the Eagles' lead to 4-3.
• Nick Neibauer hit a double down the right field line in the fourth. He came around to score on Wilson's RBI single.
• Kody Brown pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball in relief for the Falcons. He allowed just two hits while recording one strikeout.
• Wes Rickenberg also recorded a scoreless appearance, as he worked 0.2 innings of hitless ball.
