Falcons Host 2007 MAC Championships This Weekend

The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will play host to the 2007 Mid-American Conference Championships this weekend (May 3-5). The 72-hole event will take place at the Medallion Club in Westerville, Ohio.

The tournament will begin on Thursday (May 3) with 36 holes of action, followed by 18 holes on Friday and Saturday.

About the Medallion Club: The Medallion Club is 27 holes of championship Jack Nicklaus II golf. It has picturesque ponds, wooded areas and preserve lands. Believe it or not, this isn't a luxurious vacation. When you belong to The Medallion Club, it's an everyday lifestyle.

Notes on the Team:
The MAC Championships could not be coming at a better time for the Orange and Brown. The Falcons are coming off their best two performances of the season, finishing second at the UD Invitational (12 teams) and fifth at the First Energy Intercollegiate (17 teams) this past weekend.

At the UD Invitational the Falcons carded a 936 (317-313-306) en route to their second-place finish. All five Falcons finished in the top-34, including freshman John Powers who won the UD Invitational by one stroke, the first Falcon medalist since 2004.

The following weekend BGSU carded an 887 at the First Energy Intercollegiate, including a 290 on the final day of competition, the best among the 17-team field. Included in the large field were MAC schools: Akron (869, 2nd), Eastern Michigan (877, 4th), Ohio (895, 6th), Northern Illinois (897, 7th), Ball State (900, 8th) and Miami (901, 9th). Once again it was a team effort, with four of the five Falcons finishing in the top-34 among the 96-player field. Leading the way was junior captain Jace Walker, who finished in a tie for 13th (76-71-72).

Individual Notes:
Competing this weekend will by juniors Jace Walker and Trevor Spathelf, along with a trio of freshman, Andrew Ladwig, John Powers and Matt Schneider.

Junior Jace Walker

Walker is tops on the team with a 74.50, and according to mac-sports.com, his 74.50 stroke average ranks 13th in the conference. The St. Thomas, Ontario native has been named MAC Golfer of the Week twice this year after finishing fifth at the John Piper Intercollegiate (76-69) and third at the Earl Yestingmeier (71-72-66). The junior has eight rounds at par or better this season and four top-20 finishes.

Freshman John Powers

Second on the team is John Powers with his 75.95 stroke average. He ranks 25th in the MAC overall, but second among freshman that have played at least 20 rounds this season. The Bowling Green, Ohio native has had an outstanding spring season, finishing 14th at the Marshall Invitational (72-74), first at the UD Spring Invitational (76-79-71) and 22nd at the First Energy Intercollegiate (75-75-72).

Freshman Andrew Ladwig

Not far off the pace is fellow classmate Andrew Ladwig and his 76.50 stroke average. The East Grand Rapids, Michigan native is coming off his strongest performance of the season, finishing 17th at the First Energy Intercollegiate (72-77-71) this past weekend. He also finished 20th at the USF Invitational (72-78-72) and 38th at the Eastern Kentucky Spring Invitational (75-74-75) earlier this year.

Freshman Matt Schneider

Matt Schneider completes the trip of freshmen for this weekend's championships. The Grand Rapids, Minn. Native owns a 76.73 stroke average through 26 rounds this season. These past two weekends he finished 27th at the UD Spring Invitational (83-82-75) and 34th at the First Energy Intercollegiate (74-77-75).

Junior Trevor Spathelf

The only other upper-classman competing this weekend will be junior Trevor Spathelf. Another Bowling Green, Ohio, native, is currently averaging 76.92 strokes per round. His top finish of the season came just two weeks ago at the UD Spring Invitational where he finished in a tie for 16th (84-74-79). He has also finished 21st at the Cleveland State Invitational (80-76) and 26th at the John Piper Intercollegiate (76-77) earlier this year.
