FINAL COURSE STATISTICS
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team once again finished near the top of the pack by placing sixth among a group of 17 teams at the 2009 Bearcat Invitational, which was played at the Traditions Golf Course in Hebron, Kentucky.
After the tournament's 54 holes on the par-72, 7,103-yard course, the Falcons had a score of 904 (296-295-313). The Falcons attained that mark, in part, due to their tournament-best score of five-over-par on the course's four par-5 holes. Bowling Green also registered the second most pars of the tournament, with 175, and they also earned 28 birdies, more than all but four teams at the tournament.
The Falcons fell just one shot shy of finishing in the top five; Western Kentucky earned fifth place with a score of 903. Miami (Ohio) University won the tournament with a three-round score of 889. Ball State, Cincinnati, and Eastern Kentucky rounded out the top five. Bowling Green finished one shot ahead of fellow MAC foe Ohio University, who carded a 905 over the tournament's two days.
Individually, Falcon sophomore Drew Preston finished fifth with a four-over-par 220 (74-69-77). Preston scored the third-most birdies (nine) of anyone in the field. This is Preston's second top-five finish and third top-15 finish in the season's four tournaments to date.
Senior Matt Schneider used a tournament-best 40 pars over the tournament's 54 holes to finish in a tie for 20th place. Schneider's score of 229 (76-74-75) gives him a fourth top-20 finish out of four team events.
Parker Hewit, another Orange and Brown sophomore, carded a three-round total of 231 (72-75-84) to finish in the top half of the 90-player field with a tie for 45th place.
Senior John Powers and freshman Wes Gates tied for 54th place, each scoring a total of 234.
Miami University's Nathan Sutherland (210) won the tournament by seven strokes over Eric Steger of Ball State. Cincinnati's Joe Kastelic and Austin Peay's Erik Barnes completed the tournament's top four finishers.
The Falcons will return to action next Monday and Tuesday, October 19th and 20th, at the Flyer Invitational in Dayton, Ohio.
